Abstract

We demonstrate an all-optical quantization scheme by slicing the supercontinuum (SC) generated in the normal dispersion region of a highly nonlinear fiber. The −20 dB bandwidth of the SC is broadened from 12.9 to 49.7 nm when input average power varies from 0.062 to 0.692 mW, which is used for realizing subsequent quantization. In addition, in order to evaluate the system performance, we have calculated the values of differential nonlinear error, integral nonlinear error, and effective number of bit from the experimental results as 0.471 least significant bit (LSB), 0.519 LSB, and 4.39 bit, respectively.

Real-time and ultrafast optical pulse quantization based on slicing the supercontinuum

Ya Guo, Qiang Cai, Zhiwei Jia +8 more

All-optical analog-to-digital conversion is a paramount issue in modern science. How to implement real-time and ultrafast quantization to optical pulses with different intensities in an all-optical domain is a central problem. Here, we report a real-time demonstration of an all-optical quantization scheme based on slicing the supercontinuum in a nonlinear fiber. In comparison with previous schemes through off-line analysis of the power of different optical spectral components in the supercontinuum, this, to the best of our knowledge, is the first demonstration of such functionality online in the time domain. Moreover, the extinction ratio among the quantized outputs can exceed 10 dB, which further confirms the feasibility of the proposed quantization scheme. The current 3 bit resolution in the proof-of-principle experiment is limited by the current experimental condition, but it can be expected to be greatly enhanced through improving both the spectral width of the generated supercontinuum and the number of filtering channels used.

Incoherent fibre supercontinuum generation for all-optical random number generation

Benjamin Wetzel, Laurent Larger, Keith J. Blow +2 more

Here we propose a novel complementary concept of all-optical technique that might dramatically increase the generation rate of random bits by using simultaneously multiple spectral channels with uncorrelated signals somewhat similar to use of wave-division-multiplexing in communications. We propose to exploit the intrinsic nonlinear dynamics of extreme spectral broadening and supercontinuum (SC) generation in optical fibre, a process known to be often associated with non-deterministic fluctuations [2]. In this paper, we report proof-of concept results indicating that the fluctuations in highly nonlinear fibre SC generation can potentially be used for random number generation.
