Abstract

We use a multiphoton Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state to demonstrate optical phase measurement with sensitivity that beats the standard quantum limit. The state is produced deterministically at rates which exceed 300 MHz from a single point source.

Towards supersensitive optical phase measurement using a deterministic source of entangled multiphoton states

Giora Peniakov, Zu-En Su, Amir Beck +3 more

In principle, the use of entangled photons provides enhanced precision in optical phase measurements. This precision significantly surpasses the classical shot-noise limit, and thereby has many possible applications in science and technology. In practice, however, entangled multiphoton states have been generated so far using various intrinsically probabilistic and unscalable processes, thereby counteracting the advantages that the entangled photon states might have. The authors overcome these limitations here by using a quantum knitting machine, based on a single semiconductor quantum dot, to generate a polarization-entangled multiphoton state in a deterministic manner. The multiphoton state is then used to demonstrate super-sensitive optical phase measurement. The results pave the way for realizing genuine quantum enhanced optical measurements in the very near future.

Super-Sensitive Quantum Metrology with Separable States

Mayukh Lahiri, Manuel Erhard

We introduce a super-sensitive phase measurement technique that yields the Heisenberg limit without using either a squeezed state or a many-particle entangled state. Instead, we use a many-particle separable quantum state to probe the phase and we then retrieve the phase through single-particle interference. The particles that physically probe the phase are never detected. Our scheme involves no coincidence measurement or many-particle interference and yet exhibits phase super-resolution. We also analyze in detail how the loss of probing particles affects the measurement sensitivity and find that the loss results in the generation of many-particle entanglement and the reduction of measurement sensitivity. When the loss is maximum, the system produces a many-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state, and the phase measurement becomes impossible due to very high phase uncertainty. In striking contrast to the super-sensitive phase measurement techniques that use entanglement involving two or more particles as a key resource, our method shows that having many-particle entanglement can be counterproductive in quantum metrology.

Multicolor Quantum Metrology with Entangled Photons

Bryn A. Bell, Srikanth Kannan, Alex R. McMillan +3 more

Entangled photons can be used to make measurements with an accuracy beyond that possible with classical light. While most implementations of quantum metrology have used states made up of a single color of photons, we show that entangled states of two colors can show supersensitivity to optical phase and path length by using a photonic crystal fiber source of photon pairs inside an interferometer. This setup is relatively simple and robust to experimental imperfections. We demonstrate sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit and show superresolved interference fringes using entangled states of two, four, and six photons.

Multiphoton Graph States from a Solid-State Single-Photon Source

Jinpeng Li, Jian Qin, Ang Chen +7 more

Photonic graph states are underlying resources for one-way optical quantum computation, quantum error correction, fundamental testing of quantum mechanics, and quantum communication networks. Most existing works, however, are based on the spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources that intrinsically suffer from probabilistic generation and double pair components. Here, we create two important classes of graph states, a polarization-encoded four-photon Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state and a linear cluster state, by actively demultiplexing a deterministic single-photon source from a semiconductor quantum dot embedded in a micropillar. A state fidelity of 0.790 ± 0.009 (0.763 ± 0.004) and a count rate of ∼13 Hz are observed for the four-photon GHZ (cluster) state. The results constitute a new route toward the multiphoton entanglement with deterministic single-photon sources.
