Abstract

Abstract We investigate the parametrically amplified four-wave mixing, spontaneous parametric four-wave-mixing, second- and fourth-order fluorescence signals coming from the four-level double-Λ electromagnetically induced transparency system of a hot 85Rb atomic vapor. The biphoton temporal correlation is obtained from spontaneous parametric four-wave-mixing and fourth-order fluorescence processes. Meanwhile, we first observed the biphoton Rabi oscillation with a background of linear Rayleigh scattering and uncorrelated second-order fluorescence. The outcomes of the investigation may contribute potentially to the applications in dense coding quantum communication systems.

Four-Wave Mixing and Biphoton Generation in a Two-Level System

Shengwang Du, Jianming Wen, Morton H. Rubin +1 more

We find that in a two-level system there are two kinds of four-wave mixing processes which destructively contribute to the third-order nonlinear susceptibility. In a paired-photon generation scheme by using a single retroreflected pump beam, these two processes occur with definite time orders. The biphoton temporal correlation, which is measured with a back-to-back geometry in a laser-cooled two-level atomic ensemble, shows a damped Rabi oscillation and photon antibunching. Without suppressing the background of Rayleigh scattering, the upper limit of Cauchy criteria is estimated.

Dressed four-wave mixing and multi-order fluorescence signals

Huayan Lan, Heqing Huang, Haixia Chen +5 more

We mainly investigate four generated four-wave-mixing (FWM) signals, and second- and fourth-order fluorescence (FL) signals, simultaneously in a cascade three-level atomic system of sodium, in which dual electromagnetically induced transparency windows are used to enable transparency of the generated FWM signals. The moving and immobile two-photon dressing effects on the FWM and multi-order FL signals as well as the interaction of dressing effects are studied. Furthermore, we investigate the spontaneous parametric FWM signal and spatial images of the transmitted probe signal modulated by the cross-Kerr nonlinearities effect of the dressing field both experimentally and theoretically. The study may find applications in all-optical communication.

Interference of a Narrowband Biphoton with Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in an N-Type System

Peng Chen, Jun Qian, Dong-Yuan Chen +2 more

We predict the possibility of the interference of narrow-band biphotons generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing with double electromagnetically induced transparency configuration in cold atoms. In an N-type four-level system, an auxiliary optical field Ω m can create double transparency windows for anti-Stokes photons. When the slow light effects in the double transparency windows are very strong, two four-wave mixing channels could exist due to the splitting of the phase matching condition. The biphoton generated from the two four-wave mixing channels can cause interference and shows Rabi oscillations in two-photon correlation. This interference mechanism will complement the understanding of interference at the two-photon level.

Shaping Temporal Correlation of Biphotons in a Hot Atomic Ensemble

Kangkang Li, Yuan Zhao, Yishan Qin +3 more

The biphoton states have served as one of the candidates for most quantum‐enabled technologies. Moreover, with the benefit of photon–atom interactions, biphotons with controllable wave functions are particularly interesting in quantum information processes. Herein, an experimental realization of the shaping temporal correlation of biphotons from the four‐wave mixing process in a hot Rb atomic ensemble is presented. Based on the slow‐light effect and electromagnetically induced transparency in the group delay region, the precursor‐like propagation is observed and separated from the rising edge of the delayed wave packets of biphotons temporal correlation. In addition, the application of an additional dressing field enriches the features of the biphotons temporal correlation such as the manipulation of the dispersion experienced by the generated photons and controllable coherent time. Furthermore, with a higher optical depth and stronger dressing coupling effect, the temporal correlation of biphotons is shaped from the group delay region to the Rabi oscillation region and even superposed of them.

Nonclassical light generation via a four-level inverted-Y system

Jianming Wen, Shengwang Du, Yanpeng Zhang +2 more

We have theoretically analyzed nonclassical paired photons generated spontaneously from a four-level inverted-Y atomic system. We discuss the feasibility of biphoton generation due to different pumping arrangements. Two types of correlated photon pair emissions have been carefully examined: dressed cascade and dressed double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ emissions. In the dressed cascade two-photon emission, the coincidence counting rate may exhibit a damped Rabi oscillation, in contrast with a simple exponential decay feature in the literatures. In the dressed double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration, we show that not only is the temporal correlation of entangled Stokes--anti-Stokes photons in agreement with discussions presented by Wen et al. [Phys. Rev. A 76, 013825 (2007)], but also the oscillation period may be manipulated by altering either the control Rabi frequency or the dressing Rabi frequency or both. All the observed damped Rabi oscillations in the two-photon coincidences result from the destructive interference among the possible four-wave mixing processes occurring in the atom-field interaction system. This feature of the two-photon amplitude is governed by the convolution between the phase matching and third-order nonlinear susceptibility. The methodology adopted here can be applied to other atomic-level configurations and provides a useful tool to study the spectroscopy of the system. The generated narrow-band photon pairs may have potential applications in long-distance quantum communication and quantum information processing.

Temporal profile of biphotons generated from a hot atomic vapor and the spectrum of electromagnetically induced transparency

Shih-Si Hsiao, Wei‐Kai Huang, Ya Lin +3 more

We systematically studied the temporal profile of biphotons, pairs of time-correlated single photons, generated from a hot atomic vapor via the spontaneous four-wave mixing process. The measured temporal width of biphoton wave packet or two-photon correlation function against the coupling power was varied from about 70 to 580 ns. We derived an analytical expression of the biphoton's spectral profile in the Doppler-broadened medium. The analytical expression reveals that the spectral profile is mainly determined by the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and behaves like a Lorentzian function with a linewidth approximately equal to the EIT linewidth. Consequently, the biphoton's temporal profile influenced by the Doppler broadening is an exponential-decay function, which was consistent with the experimental data. Employing a weak input probe field of classical light, we further measured the EIT spectra under the same experimental conditions as those in the biphoton measurements. The theoretical predictions of the biphoton wave packets calculated with the parameters determined by the classical-light EIT spectra are consistent with the experimental data. The consistency demonstrates that in the Doppler-broadened medium, the classical-light EIT spectrum is a good indicator for the biphoton's temporal profile. The measured biphoton's temporal widths well approximated the predictions of the analytical formula based on the biphoton's EIT effect. This study provides an analytical way to quantitatively understand the biphoton's spectral and temporal profiles in the Doppler-broadened medium.
