Abstract

Abstract In the paper the design of a magnetic trap for low mass-dimensional microwave frequency standards is presented. The dependencies between the number of registered photons by PMT and magnetic field values are established. The new algorithm for optical processing is developed. For different designs of microwave standard on 199Hg+ ions the results comparison of experimental Allan deviation researches is performed.

Abstract The article presents the development of a new low mass-dimensional microwave frequency standard on Hg-199 ions. The optimal ion trap parameters are calculated. The new control algorithm is developed. The compact driver for trap field is constructed. The experimental data received show the decrease in size and mass while saving precision characteristics.

Modified quantum frequency standard on Hg-199 ions

Nikita A. Lukashev, Vadim Vladimirovich Davydov, V. Yu. Rud’

Abstract The world around us depends on devices capable of producing or maintaining a signal with an extreme precision. Quantum frequency standards are the answer to this problem. This article presents a modified version of newly developed quantum frequency standard based on trapping Hg-199 ions by magnetic field. The new prototype was developed a while ago and now it was modified due to algorithm improvements and renewed digital hardware, analog and digital circuitry being reordered. Results for Allan deviation show 3 % improvement for long-term frequency stability and more than 5 % for short-term stability

High-accuracy frequency standards using laser-cooled Hg+ ions

Dana J. Berkeland, J.D. Miller, Brent C. Young +3 more

We discuss frequency standards based on laser-cooled 199Hg+ ions confined in cryogenic rf traps. In one experiment, the frequency of a microwave source is served to the ions' ground-state hyperfine transition at 40.5 GHz. For seven ions and a Ramsey free precession time of 100 s, the fractional frequency stability is 3.3 (2) X 10-13 (tau) -1/2 for measurement times (tau) < 2 h. The ground-state hyperfine interval is measured to be 40 507 347 996.841 59 (14) (41) Hz, where the first number in parentheses is the uncertainty due to statistics and systematic errors, and the second is the uncertainty in the frequency of the time scale to which the standard is compared. In a second experiment under development, a strong-binding cryogenic trap will confine a single ion used for an optical frequency standard based on a narrow electric quadrupole transition at 282 nm. The bandwidth of the laser used to drive this transition is less than 10 Hz at 563 nm.
