Abstract

Abstract The article presents the development of a new low mass-dimensional microwave frequency standard on Hg-199 ions. The optimal ion trap parameters are calculated. The new control algorithm is developed. The compact driver for trap field is constructed. The experimental data received show the decrease in size and mass while saving precision characteristics.

Abstract The world around us depends on devices capable of producing or maintaining a signal with an extreme precision. Quantum frequency standards are the answer to this problem. This article presents a modified version of newly developed quantum frequency standard based on trapping Hg-199 ions by magnetic field. The new prototype was developed a while ago and now it was modified due to algorithm improvements and renewed digital hardware, analog and digital circuitry being reordered. Results for Allan deviation show 3 % improvement for long-term frequency stability and more than 5 % for short-term stability

Optimal Microwave Radiation Field Parameters for Mercury Ion Microwave Frequency Standards

Zhi-Hui Yang, Hao Liu, Yue-Hong He +5 more

We propose a method to determine the optimal power of the microwave resonance transition that simultaneously improves the signal-to-noise ratio and reduces line width based on saturation broadening theory and experiment. Saturation broadening spectra of the ground state hyperfine transition of trapped 199 Hg + ions are measured and analyzed. The value of the optimal microwave power is obtained by using the proposed method and is verified. Rabi oscillations decay spectra of trapped 199 Hg + ions are observed and the optimal microwave irradiation time for the maximum transition signal intensity is determined. This work will help to improve the short-term frequency stability of the mercury ion microwave frequency standard.
