Abstract

Nonlinear non-Hermitian systems with saturable nonlinearities give rise to versatile phenomena that have no counterparts in linear systems. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate saturable nonlinearity (saturable absorption and gain) of erbium ions doped in silica microcavities at different concentrations. Our results show that when the doped concentration is low, the single isolated model agrees well with the experimental results, and also can be used as a basic description of highly doped samples to analyze the saturable nonlinearity. Yet, for highly doped microcavities we find that the clustering effect shall be also taken into account in order to match experimental data and to achieve a reasonable agreement. To confirm our finding, we experimentally characterize the saturable nonlinearity for ion concentrations varying from $\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}1.0\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}$ to $5.0\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{19}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. Our experiment shows excellent consistency with the theory, which in turn suggests other potential applications of the theory based on saturable nonlinearity, including optical bistability and nonlinear parity-time symmetry.

Optical-fiber ring cavity with saturable rare-earth-doped fiber

E. Aguilar, S. Srepanov, E. Hernandez

Resonance properties of the all-fiber ring cavity filled with nonlinear material - saturable rare-earth-doped fiber are analyzed and experimentally investigated. Unlike the earlier investigated erbium-doped fiber at 1550nm where the optical absorption photo-induced change (saturation) is observed only, the ytterbium-doped fiber at 1064nm demonstrates the saturation of the refractive index mainly. For this configuration we report experimental observation of the optical bistability and hysteresis in the transmitted output light at the 10mW-scale incident light power. The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the theoretical analysis that takes into account the saturation of both parameters: the optical absorption and the refractive index of the doped fiber. The reported results seem promising for applications in high-sensitivity interferometric configurations at 1064nm operation wavelength.

Clustering-induced nonsaturable absorption phenomenon in heavily erbium-doped silica fibers

Eric Maurice, Gérard Monnom, Bernard Dussardier +1 more

Nonsaturable absorption experiments in heavily erbium-doped fibers demonstrate that the behavior of the absorption with pump power cannot be interpreted with an ion-pair model but requires that the presence of larger clusters be taken into account. Numerical modeling permits the determination of the percentage of ions organized in clusters, as much as 52% of the dopants in the tested fiber, and the intracluster transfer rate, up to 2 × 106 s−1.

Experimental evidence of differences in the absorption spectra of clustered and isolated ions in erbium-doped fibers

B.N. Samson, Wei H. Loh, J.P. de Sandro

The absorption spectra of clustered and isolated ions in erbium-doped germanosilicate fibers have been experimentally studied. The ground-state absorption spectra broaden as the degree of erbium-ion clustering increases, indicating that the absorption spectrum of clustered ions is significantly different from that of the homogeneous ions. This fact is confirmed by comparison of the broadened absorption spectra with the fiber's unbleachable loss spectrum, a direct measurement of the clustered ions. This is the first experimental evidence to the authors' knowledge that indicates different absorption cross sections for the two species of ions in germanosilicate glass, an assumption that is used in the theoretical description of self-pulsing in erbium-doped fiber lasers but is in direct contradiction to the pair-induced quenching model widely used to characterize erbium-doped fiber amplifiers.

Excited-state nonlinear absorption and its application in photonic technology

Li Chun-Fei, Jinhai Si, Yang Miao +1 more

The main achievements in our research on the physical phenomena of the excited-state nonlinear absorption in a molecular system and its applications in photonic technology are described. In the first part of this paper, some energy-level models and rate-equations are used to explain various mechanisms of the excited-state nonlinear absorption under different conditions, such as reverse saturable absorption caused by the triplet and/or the singlet excited-state absorption; saturable absorption due to the first and/or the second singlet excited-state absorption; and the excited-state nonlinear absorption induced by two-photon absorption. The experimental results for metal-organic and C 60 materials irradiated by ps and ns laser pulses are consistent with the simulated curves of the transmittance versus fluences. In the second part, the applications of excited-state nonlinear absorption in photonic techniques including optical bistability, optical switching, optical limiting, optical modulation, optical logic and optical storage are introduced. The working principles of the photonic devices based on the excited-state nonlinear absorption are presented. The experimental characteristic curves are found in good agreement with the theoretical simulations for these devices.

Saturable Absorption in Erbium-doped Fiber and Optical Bistability in Erbium-doped Fiber Ring Laser

Deeksha Jachpure, R. Vijaya

Saturable absorption in erbium-doped fiber is presented through absorption measurements using a tunable laser and variable power. Its consequent optical bistability is also observed in erbium-doped fiber ring laser with long lengths of the fiber. Higher absorption at shorter wavelengths enables a wider bistable range.

Photonic Crystal Microcavity Amplifier

D. Biallo, Antonella D’Orazio, M. De Sario +3 more

Summary form only given: Amplification in rare-earth doped solid state planar optical structures has attracted a lot of interest in recent years due to the fact that the rare earth ions show sharp absorption and emission bands and relatively long luminescence lifetimes. In particular the erbium (Er) ion is very attractive because of its intra 4f-transition from the first excited state to the ground state around 1.53 mum (4I13/2-4I15/2). The main problem of the erbium doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWAs) is that high values of the Er3+concentration are required to reach high gain figures in a compact length, but in this way the concentration quenching effects become very considerable and detrimental to the optical gain, since they reduce the population in the first excited state. A good solution to overcome this dramatic drawback is to consider erbium doped photonic crystal amplifier (EDPCA). In fact the small group velocity of electromagnetic eigenmodes brings about the enhancement of stimulated emission if the photonic crystals are doped by active media as the rare earth ions E3+r or Yt3+. This phenomenon originates from the long interaction time between radiation field and the matter caused by the small group velocity near the edge of the photonic band gap. The efficient confinement of light is achievable not only by tuning the input signal at the band edge of the gap of the photonic crystal but it is also obtainable by introducing local defects inside photonic crystals. The density of electromagnetic states inside a cavity is significantly modified and the spontaneous emission of atoms in a cavity can be either enhanced or inhibited. Erbium doped silica-titania one-dimensional photonic crystal microcavities have been analyzed by solving the erbium rate equations and the Maxwell equations by means of an auxiliary differential equation finite difference time domain technique. Since the performance of optical amplifiers depends on the populations of the energy levels participating in radiative transitions, determined principally by the distribution and concentration of the rare-earth ions and by the pumping conditions, the relations between these parameters and the transmittance of the EDPCMA have been studied
