Optical-fiber ring cavity with saturable rare-earth-doped fiber

Abstract

Resonance properties of the all-fiber ring cavity filled with nonlinear material - saturable rare-earth-doped fiber are analyzed and experimentally investigated. Unlike the earlier investigated erbium-doped fiber at 1550nm where the optical absorption photo-induced change (saturation) is observed only, the ytterbium-doped fiber at 1064nm demonstrates the saturation of the refractive index mainly. For this configuration we report experimental observation of the optical bistability and hysteresis in the transmitted output light at the 10mW-scale incident light power. The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the theoretical analysis that takes into account the saturation of both parameters: the optical absorption and the refractive index of the doped fiber. The reported results seem promising for applications in high-sensitivity interferometric configurations at 1064nm operation wavelength.

Resonance-enhanced refractive index and its dynamics in rare-earth-doped fibers

Yan Xue, P. L. Chu, Weiping Zhang

We present a theory that enables us to account for the pump-induced change of refractive index in a rare-earth-doped fiber. Experimental results carried out on an erbium-doped fiber with cw pump and cw signal operation confirm the accuracy of this theory at the steady state. Both theoretical and experimental results show that significant index changes can be obtained for the order of 1–2 mW of cw optical pump or signal power. In addition we studied the transient dynamics of the resonance-enhanced refractive index in a wide range of pulse widths from millisecond to tens of femtoseconds. The result shows that a fast response of refractive-index changes is achievable since the effects of spontaneous emission and nonradiative decay are negligible in the short-pulse case.

Saturable Absorption in Erbium-doped Fiber and Optical Bistability in Erbium-doped Fiber Ring Laser

Deeksha Jachpure, R. Vijaya

Saturable absorption in erbium-doped fiber is presented through absorption measurements using a tunable laser and variable power. Its consequent optical bistability is also observed in erbium-doped fiber ring laser with long lengths of the fiber. Higher absorption at shorter wavelengths enables a wider bistable range.

Low-frequency parametric amplification in saturable ytterbium-doped fibers at 1064 nm

Serguei I. Stepanov, E. Hernandez Hernandez, Francisco A. Domínguez-Serna +1 more

Experimental results on parametric optical processes in saturable ytterbium-doped fibers (YDFs) at the wavelength of 1064 nm are reported. Significant photoinduced change of the refractive index under saturation of the fiber-optical absorption in the near-infrared range enables us to consider this medium as an effective optical Kerr ( χ ′′′ ) medium. For pumping, it needs continuous-wave Nd:YAG laser power of 10-mW scale, but the saturation process has the characteristic time ≤1ms, governed by the metastable level lifetime in YDF. We investigate the nearly degenerate collinear configuration of the optical parametric amplification (OPA). Here we focus on unidirectional transformation of the initial amplitude modulation in the incident pump wave to the output phase modulation as a manifestation of OPA in a narrowband case. This effect results from the conventional coupled-wave equations for the signal and idler waves—if one considers them as the modulation sidebands. It can also be treated as a result of the self-phase modulation of the periodically modulated pump in the Kerr medium. OPA gain of about 0.64 with the net gain ≈0.29 was experimentally estimated for the utilized 2-m-long YDF in the frequency band ≈200Hz.

Large off-resonance nonlinear index changes at 1310 nm and 1545 nm observed in ytterbium-doped fiber

John W. Arkwright, P. Elango, Trevor Whitbread +1 more

The resonant nonlinearity observed in rare-earth doped fiber is of interest for all-optical switching due to the very low pump powers needed to achieve complete switching. Large nonlinear effects have been observed previously in both erbium and neodymium doped fibers, however, these large effects cannot be explained by taking into account the change in absorption of local transitions alone. Two mechanisms have been suggested to account for these anomalously large index changes, namely thermally induced effects and far from resonance population dependent effects. In this work, an ytterbium doped twin-core fiber is used to investigate the tow possible mechanisms, and by allowing the doped fiber to lase and observing the clamping of the induced phase change, it is demonstrated that the effect is population dependent in nature. The observed wavelength response of the effect shows an increase in induced phase towards shorter wavelengths, which suggests that the effect is due principally to changes in strong absorptions in the UV. This far-from-resonance effect has been used to demonstrate large phase changes at the preferred telecommunications windows of 1300nm and 1550nm.

A study and modeling of Fabry-Perot cavities with rare earth doped fiber

Sławomir Cięszczyk, Jacek Klimek, Krzysztof Skorupski +1 more

This paper presents properties of all-optical bistable fibre switch using two fibre Bragg gratings and rare earth elements doped optical fiber. It is not possible to obtain bistable properties at low switching power level in case of a single fibre grating. In this article the method of optical switching that uses all-optical switch has been proposed. It has been achieved by varying the refractive index of nonlinear optical material as a result of light signal amplitude changes. Presented optical bistable device can be used both in contemporary optically switched networks as well as in optoelectronic sensors, owing to their high achievable resolution.

Absorption and gain saturable nonlinearities in erbium-doped optical microcavities

Yong Hu, Yan Bai, Liu Shuan Yang +4 more

Nonlinear non-Hermitian systems with saturable nonlinearities give rise to versatile phenomena that have no counterparts in linear systems. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate saturable nonlinearity (saturable absorption and gain) of erbium ions doped in silica microcavities at different concentrations. Our results show that when the doped concentration is low, the single isolated model agrees well with the experimental results, and also can be used as a basic description of highly doped samples to analyze the saturable nonlinearity. Yet, for highly doped microcavities we find that the clustering effect shall be also taken into account in order to match experimental data and to achieve a reasonable agreement. To confirm our finding, we experimentally characterize the saturable nonlinearity for ion concentrations varying from $\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}1.0\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}$ to $5.0\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{19}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. Our experiment shows excellent consistency with the theory, which in turn suggests other potential applications of the theory based on saturable nonlinearity, including optical bistability and nonlinear parity-time symmetry.
