A Highly Efficient Scheme of Redistribution of Optical Radiation Scattered by Spatial Gratings of Atomic Populations

Abstract

Abstract The radiation intensity redistribution of the probe field upon its scattering by spatially periodic atomic population gratings in a medium with a four-level tripod configuration of atomic states is investigated theoretically. Conditions are found under which a significant redistribution of the probe-wave field intensity occurs, and a “diffraction” pattern is formed with an efficient probe-field intensity transfer to the first-order maxima.

A Phase Switch for Electromagnetically Induced Gratings in a Medium with Λ Atoms

M. Yu. Gordeev, Yu. V. Rozhdestvenskiǐ

Abstract We have theoretically studied the possibility of using the phenomenon of phase switching of coherent population trapping for creating a switch of light propagation direction in electromagnetically induced gratings in a medium with Λ-atoms. The permissible region of this effect application is determined and the parameters are found which ensure the obtaining of a high-efficiency scheme of the spatial redistribution of probing field intensity on atomic density gratings.

Electromagnetically induced grating in a four-level tripod-type atomic system

Yabin Dong, Yao-Hua Guo

An electromagnetically induced grating in a four-level tripod-type atomic system is studied theoretically. By virtue of a weak standing-wave signal field, the phase modulation effectively diffracts a weak probe field into the first-order direction. By changing the weak signal field, the diffraction of the weak probe field can be modulated in real time, and a first-order diffraction efficiency of more than 32% can be obtained with proper parameters. Such a system has a potential application in an all-optical switch controlled by a weak optical signal.

Multi-wave-mixing-induced nonlinear modulation of diffraction peaks in an opto-atomic grating

Bibhas Kumar Dutta, Pradipta Panchadhyayee, Indranil Bayal +2 more

We propose an atomic model in close-loop configuration, which exhibits controllable symmetric and asymmetric evolution of significantly enhanced diffraction peaks of the weak probe beam in an opto-atomic grating at far-field regime. Such results are obtained by the linear and nonlinear modulation of the intensities of the diffraction peaks as a result of multi-wave-mixing-induced modification of spatially modulated coherence in a closed four-level atomic system. Novelty of the results lies in predicting the diffraction pattern with uniform peak height due to the dominance of the amplitude part of the grating-transfer-function at the condition of exact atom-field resonance, which is unique to the present model. Efficacy of the present scheme is to apply it in producing nonlinear light generated by four-wave-mixing-induced control of spatially modulated coherence effect. The work also finds its importance for its applicability in the field of all-optical devices.

Electromagnetically induced grating via amplitude and phase modulations in a three-level V-type atomic medium

Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, Nguyen Huy Bang, Bui Van Cuong +9 more

Abstract A probe laser beam can be completely absorbed in an atomic resonance frequency region, however, if a coupling laser beam is further applied to the atom, the atomic medium can exhibit electromagnetically induced transparency, i.e the probe beam can be completely transmitted through the atomic medium. Thus, if the coupling beam is a standing wave field with nodes and antinodes, it will cause in space a periodic modulation of the transmitted spectrum of the probe field. This means that the probe field propagates through the atomic medium just as it passes through a diffraction grating which is called electromagnetically induced grating. Based on amplitude or phase modulation of transmission function, the absorption grating or the phase grating can be formed, respectively. In this work, based on controllable absorption and dispersion properties of a three-level V-type atomic system, we study the control of the absorption grating and the phase grating with respect to the intensity and the frequency of the laser fields. The absorption diffraction pattern at the two-photon resonance is obtained, while the phase diffraction pattern appears when there is a frequency shift of either the coupling frequency or the probe frequency compared to the corresponding atomic resonance frequency. By adjusting the coupling or/and probe laser frequency, the absorption grating can be converted into the phase grating and the high-order diffraction efficiency can also be improved.

Cross-phase modulation and population redistribution in a periodic tripod medium

K. Słowik, Andrzej Raczyński, J. Zaremba +3 more

The cross-Kerr effect is studied for two weak beams, probe and trigger, propagating in an atomic medium in a tripod configuration, dressed by a strong standing wave coupling beam in a regime of electromagnetically induced transparency. The nonlinear phase shifts for both transmitted and reflected probe beams induced by the trigger's presence are found to depend on the probe detuning, the control beam's intensity, the relaxation rates and, in particular, on the redistribution of the population among the atomic levels. Such a quantitative analysis indicates that the transmitted and reflected probe beam components and their respective phase shifts can be easily controlled and optimized.
