Abstract

Physical-layer secret key generation (PSKG) leveraging reciprocal wireless channel has been widely studied in pairwise communication scenarios as it addresses the key distribution problem in traditional security mechanisms. However, PSKG encounters the challenges of low key agreement, information leakage and high system cost when it is extended to produce a secret key for a group of users. In this paper, we propose a lightweight Group secret key generation approach leveraging Non-reconciled received Signal Strength (GNSS). Specifically, pairwise bit sequences with high similarity are firstly extracted and then a group key is securely shared with the protection of these pairwise bit sequences, which prevents the information leakage and sophisticated information reconciliation. Detailed algorithms of GNSS for star and chain networks are presented. Numerical and experimental results demonstrate that GNSS can provide high key agreement, thus enabling key generation technology to be used in a group communication scenario.

Physical-layer secret key generation for dual-task scenarios

Lilin Yang, Guyue Li, Tao Guo +2 more

Physical-layer secret key generation (PSKG) provides a lightweight way for group key (GK) sharing between wireless users in large-scale wireless networks. However, most of the existing works in this field consider only group communication. For a commonly dual-task scenario, where both GK and pairwise key (PK) are required, traditional methods are less suitable for direct extension. For the first time, we discover a security issue with traditional methods in dual-task scenarios, which has not previously been recognized. We propose an innovative segment-based key generation method to solve this security issue. We do not directly use PK exclusively to negotiate the GK as traditional methods. Instead, we generate GK and PK separately through segmentation which is the first solution to meet dual-task. We also perform security and rate analysis. It is demonstrated that our method is effective in solving this security issue from an information-theoretic perspective. The rate results of simulation are also consistent with the our rate derivation.

A Recovery-Mechanism-Driven Wireless Group Key Generation Protocol for Multiuser Scenarios

Huaicong Zhang, Yawen Huang, Jiabao Yu +2 more

Physical-layer key generation (PKG) leveraging the reciprocity of wireless channel provides an effective approach for key agreement among resource-constrained Internet of Things devices. However, current researches on PKG predominantly focus on pairwise communication scenarios, and there remain challenges in achieving group key generation for multiuser scenarios. In this article, we propose a novel recovery mechanism-driven wireless group key generation protocol to facilitate key sharing in the star network typology. Specifically, the root node will assign each member node its unique group key component before initiating group key distribution. Subsequently, all group key components are distributed to member nodes using a forward error correction mechanism, which helps reduce system overhead. Finally, all member nodes utilize a recovery mechanism and their respective group key component to obtain the same complete group key, thereby achieving group key distribution. Compared to existing schemes, our protocol can avoid the significant information leakage caused by repeated distribution of the same group key, thereby enhancing security. We further design and implement a practical wireless group key generation system using ESP32. Additionally, a group channel state information (CSI) extraction tool for multiuser channel measurements is developed. Experimental results demonstrate that our protocol can generate the group key with high randomness while benefiting from good channel reciprocity, making it suitable for cryptographic applications in multiuser communication scenarios.

An Efficient Group Secret Key Generation Scheme for Wireless Sensor Network

Jiaqi Xiong, Xin Zeng, Xiaoping Xue +1 more

The Internet of Things technology is one of the important directions of Smart Grid research, involving many wireless sensors and communication facilities, and has high requirements for security. The physical layer security technology can effectively solve the security problems under wireless communication. As the most common application scenario of wireless communication is multi-node wireless network communication, group secret key (GSK) based on physical layer security and information theory security is gradually attracting investigator’s interest. In this paper, a novel physical layer GSK generation scheme based on code-domain exchange of channel information in mesh network is proposed. Instead of traditional side-information exchange in symbol-domain, error-correcting code is applied to finish information exchange and reconciliation simultaneously in code-domain. Each node processes the known channel bit sequence and then encodes it to generate a check sequence. After broadcasting the check bit sequence to other nodes, each node decodes the received check bit sequences to obtained the unknown channel information. The simulation results show that the scheme can effectively reduce the times of information exchanges while keeping a good performance including low bit error rate and low block error rate.

Physical layer security (PLS) has evolved to be a pivotal technique in ensuring secure wireless communication. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the recent developments in physical layer secret key generation (PLSKG). The principle, procedure, techniques and performance metricesare investigated for PLSKG between a pair of users (PSKG) and for a group of users (GSKG). In this paper, a detailed comparison of the various parameters and techniques employed in different stages of key generation such as, channel probing, quantisation, encoding, information reconciliation (IR) and privacy amplification (PA) are provided. Apart from this, a comparison of bit disagreement rate, bit generation rate and approximate entropy is also presented. The work identifies PSKG and GSKG schemes which are practically realizable and also provides a discussion on the test bed employed for realising various PLSKG schemes. Moreover, a discussion on the research challenges in the area of PLSKG is also provided for future research.

Non-Reconciled Physical-Layer Keys-Assisted Secure Communication Scheme Based on Channel Correlation

Meng Wang, Kaizhi Huang, Zheng Wan +3 more

Physical-layer key generation technology requires information reconciliation to correct channel estimation errors between two legitimate users. However, sending the reconciliation signals over the public channel increases the communication overhead and the risk of information leakage. Aiming at the problem, integrated secure communication schemes using non-reconciled keys have attracted extensive attention. These schemes exploit channel coding to correct both inconsistent keys and transmission error bits. Meanwhile, more redundant code bits must be added to correct errors, which results in a lower secure transmission rate. To address the problem, we analyze the merit of channel correlation between non-reconciled key generation and secure transmission. Inspired by this, we propose a non-reconciled physical-layer keys-assisted secure communication scheme based on channel correlation. First of all, the signal frame is designed to make use of channel correlation between non-reconciled key generation and secure transmission. Based on the channel correlation, non-reconciled keys are then generated from the wireless channel to encrypt transmitted data. Moreover, an adaptive coding algorithm based on the equivalent channel is presented to encode the data bits before encryption, to guarantee reliable transmission. Finally, theoretical analysis and simulations demonstrate the significant performance of the proposed scheme in terms of low bit error ratio and high secure transmission rate.

Sharing Secrets via Wireless Broadcasting: A New Efficient Physical Layer Group Secret Key Generation for Multiple IoT Devices

Jie Tang, Hong Wen, Huanhuan Song +2 more

With the increasing demands for sharing confidential information among massive Internet of Things (IoT) devices in 5G and beyond wireless networks, many applications require the common secret key generation for a group of IoT devices. However, most of the existing works on physical layer secret key generation (PLKG) only focus on the pairwise key generation between two users, which is a low efficient and high cost to be extended to the scenarios of group key generation. In this work, we propose a new efficient multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) physical layer group secret key generation scheme to reduce the consumption of channel probing and improve the efficiency for group key generation. Different from current schemes, in the proposed scheme, the transmitter randomly generates the group secret key and directly broadcasts the downlink data symbols to the group users. At the receiver end, each group user can efficiently “observe” the common group key through the downlink broadcasting data symbols, while keeping perfect secrecy of the shared group key against eavesdroppers. The performance of reliability, security, and the group key generation rate is fully investigated, which shows the advantages of high efficiency, low consumption, and strong robustness of the proposed scheme. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
