Fluctuations around Hartree states in the mean-field regime

Abstract

We consider the dynamics of a large system of $N$ interacting bosons in the mean-field regime where the interaction is of order $1/N$. We prove that the fluctuations around the nonlinear Hartree state are generated by an effective quadratic Hamiltonian in Fock space, which is derived from Bogoliubov's approximation. We use a direct method in the $N$-particle space, which is different from the one based on coherent states in Fock space.

Bogoliubov corrections and trace norm convergence for the Hartree dynamics

David Mitrouskas, Sören Petrat, Peter Pickl

We consider the dynamics of a large number [Formula: see text] of nonrelativistic bosons in the mean field limit for a class of interaction potentials that includes Coulomb interaction. In order to describe the fluctuations around the mean field Hartree state, we introduce an auxiliary Hamiltonian on the [Formula: see text]-particle space that is similar to the one obtained from Bogoliubov theory. We show convergence of the auxiliary time evolution to the fully interacting dynamics in the norm of the [Formula: see text]-particle space. This result allows us to prove several other results: convergence of reduced density matrices in trace norm with optimal rate, convergence in energy trace norm, and convergence to a time evolution obtained from the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian on Fock space with expected optimal rate. We thus extend and quantify several previous results, e.g., by providing the physically important convergence rates, including time-dependent external fields and singular interactions, and allowing for more general initial states, e.g., those that are expected to be ground states of interacting systems.

A Central Limit Theorem in Many-Body Quantum Dynamics

Gérard Ben Arous, Kay Kirkpatrick, Benjamin Schlein

We study the many body quantum evolution of bosonic systems in the mean field limit. The dynamics is known to be well approximated by the Hartree equation. So far, the available results have the form of a law of large numbers. In this paper we go one step further and we show that the fluctuations around the Hartree evolution satisfy a central limit theorem. Interestingly, the variance of the limiting Gaussian distribution is determined by a time-dependent Bogoliubov transformation describing the dynamics of initial coherent states in a Fock space representation of the system.

Derivation of Hartree’s theory for mean-field Bose gases

Mathieu Lewin B

This article is a review of recent results with Phan Thành Nam, Nicolas Rougerie, Sylvia Serfaty and Jan Philip Solovej. We consider a system of N bosons with an interaction of intensity 1 / N (mean-field regime). In the limit N → ∞ , we prove that the first order in the expansion of the eigenvalues of the many-particle Hamiltonian is given by the nonlinear Hartree theory, whereas the next order is predicted by the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian. We also discuss the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation in these systems.

Quantal corrections to mean-field dynamics including pairing

Denis Lacroix A, D. Gambacurta, Sakir Ayik B

By extending the stochastic mean-field model by including pairing, an approach is proposed for describing the evolution of complex many-body systems in terms of an ensemble of time-dependent Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov trajectories which is determined by incorporating fluctuations in the initial state. The nonlinear evolution of the initial fluctuations provides an approximate description of quantal correlations and fluctuations of collective observables. Since the initial-state fluctuations break particle-number symmetry, the dynamical description in which pairing correlations play a crucial role is greatly improved as compared to the mean-field evolution. The approach is illustrated for a system of particles governed by a pairing Hamiltonian.

The time-dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov equations for Bosons

Volker Bach, Sébastien Breteaux, Thomas Chen +2 more

Abstract We introduce the map of dynamics of quantum Bose gases into dynamics of quasifree states, which we call the “nonlinear quasifree approximation”. We use this map to derive the time-dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) equations describing the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around a Bose–Einstein condensate. We prove global well-posedness of the HFB equations for pair potentials satisfying suitable regularity conditions, and we establish important conservation laws. We show that the space of solutions of the HFB equations has a symplectic structure reminiscent of a Hamiltonian system. This is then used to relate the HFB equations to the HFB eigenvalue equations discussed in the physics literature. We also construct Gibbs equilibrium states at positive temperature associated with the HFB equations, and we establish criteria for the appearance of Bose–Einstein condensation.
