Abstract

Abstract We introduce the map of dynamics of quantum Bose gases into dynamics of quasifree states, which we call the “nonlinear quasifree approximation”. We use this map to derive the time-dependent Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) equations describing the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around a Bose–Einstein condensate. We prove global well-posedness of the HFB equations for pair potentials satisfying suitable regularity conditions, and we establish important conservation laws. We show that the space of solutions of the HFB equations has a symplectic structure reminiscent of a Hamiltonian system. This is then used to relate the HFB equations to the HFB eigenvalue equations discussed in the physics literature. We also construct Gibbs equilibrium states at positive temperature associated with the HFB equations, and we establish criteria for the appearance of Bose–Einstein condensation.

On the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations

We review some results of our paper arXiv:1602.05171v2 on the "nonlinear quasifree approximation" to the many-body Schrödinger dynamics of Bose gases. In that paper, we derive, with the help of this approximation, the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations, providing an approximate description of the dynamics of quantum fluctuations around a Bose-Einstein condensate and study properties of these equations.

APPLICATION OF DISPERSIVE PDE TECHNIQUES TO THE STUDIES OF THE TIME-DEPENDENT HARTREE-FOCK-BOGOLIUBOV SYSTEM FOR BOSONS

Jacky J. Chong

The thesis provides rigorous quantitative analyses for studying quantum fluctuations of a non-relativistic Bose gas about a Bose-Einstein condensate. In recent years, the dynamics of the condensate and the excitations of a Bose gas was shown to be well approximated by the quasifree dynamics with governing equations given by a system of coupled nonlinear dispersive PDEs called the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) system (c.f. Grillakis and Machedon, J. Fix. Point Theory A., (2013), Grillakis and Machedon, Comm. PDEs, (2017), Bach et al. in arXiv:1602.05171v2, (2018), Benedikter et al., Ann. Henri Poincare, (2018)). However, both the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the time-dependent HFB system are still in their early stages of development. Thus, the primary purposes of the thesis are to further the development of some analytic tools necessary for studying the time-dependent HFB system and use these effective equations to provide quantitative estimates for the true dynamics of the Bose gas at absolute zero temperature in Fock space norm. The thesis comprises the entirety of the author's current and past projects on the time-dependent HFB system. Each project falls into one or more of two categories: studying the local or global well-posedness of the time-dependent HFB system, or obtaining global-in-time Fock space estimates for the error terms of the quasifree approximation to the dynamics of a system of interacting bosons. In the former category, the author employs techniques of dispersive PDE theory developed in the past three decades along with classical methods of harmonic analysis to study lower regularity solutions to the time-dependent HFB system. The lower regularity well-posedness of solutions for the time-dependent HFB system is necessary for studying norm approximation of the dynamics of a dilute Bose gas with strong interactions. In the latter category, we prove global a-priori estimates for the solutions to the HFB system and use them to obtain estimates for the error terms of the Fock space approximation.

Dynamics of mean-field bosons at positive temperature

Andreas Deuchert, Marco Caporaletti, Benjamin Schlein

We study the time evolution of an initially trapped weakly interacting Bose gas at positive temperature, after the trapping potential has been switched off. It has been recently shown in Deuchert–Seiringer (2021) that the one-particle density matrix of Gibbs states of the interacting trapped gas is given, to leading order in N , as N \rightarrow \infty , by that of the ideal gas, with the condensate wave function replaced by the minimizer of the Hartree energy functional. We show that this structure is stable with respect to the many-body evolution in the following sense: the dynamics can be approximated in terms of the time-dependent Hartree equation for the condensate wave function and in terms of the free evolution for the thermally excited particles. The main technical novelty of our work is the use of the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov equations to define a fluctuation dynamics.

Coupled Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov kinetic equations for a trapped Bose gas

Milena Imamović-Tomasović, Allan Griffin

Using the Kadanoff-Baym nonequilibrium Green's-function formalism, we derive the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) collisionless kinetic equations and the associated equation of motion for the condensate wave function for a trapped Bose-condensed gas. Our work generalizes earlier work by Kane and Kadanoff for a uniform Bose gas. We include the off-diagonal (anomalous) pair correlations, and thus we have to introduce an off-diagonal distribution function in addition to the normal (diagonal) distribution function. This results in two coupled kinetic equations. If the off-diagonal distribution function can be neglected as a higher-order contribution, we obtain the semiclassical kinetic equation recently used by Zaremba, Griffin, and Nikuni (based on the simpler Popov approximation). We discuss the static local equilibrium solution of our coupled HFB kinetic equations within the semiclassical approximation. We also verify that a solution is the rigid in-phase oscillation of the equilibrium condensate and noncondensate density profiles, oscillating with the trap frequency.

Bose-Einstein Condensation Quantum Kinetics for a Gas of Interacting Excitons

O. M. Schmitt, D. B. Tran Thoai, L. Bányai +2 more

A quantum kinetics of the Bose-Einstein condensation in the self-consistent (s.c.) Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) model of the interacting Bose gas is formulated and numerically solved for the example of excitons scattering with a thermal bath of acoustic phonons. The theory describes the condensation in real time starting from a nonequilibrium initial state towards the equilibrium HFB solution. The s.c. changes of the spectrum are automatically incorporated in the scattering terms.

Generalized coherent state representation of Bose-Einstein condensates

Vladimir Chernyak, Seok Jin Choi, Shaul Mukamel

We show that the quantum many-body state of Bose-Einstein condensates consistent with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) equations is a generalized coherent state. At zero temperature, the noncondensate density and the anomalous noncondensate correlation are not independent, allowing us to eliminate one of the three variables in the TDHFB.
