Abstract

The sideband cooling method and its implementation on the Raman transition of 25 Mg + is presented. The process is numerically simulated under the conditions of experiments at the Lebedev Physical Institute. Laser pulse parameters are optimized to achieve the minimum average vibrational number over the times of Raman cooling of the order of several milliseconds.

Efficient Raman sideband cooling of trapped ions to their motional ground state

H. Che, Ke Deng, Zhilin Xu +3 more

Efficient cooling of trapped ions is a prerequisite for various applications of the ions in precision spectroscopy, quantum information, and coherence control. Raman sideband cooling is an effective method to cool the ions to their motional ground state. We investigate both numerically and experimentally the optimization of Raman sideband cooling strategies and propose an efficient one, which can simplify the experimental setup as well as reduce the number of cooling pulses. Several cooling schemes are tested and compared through numerical simulations. The simulation result shows that the fixed-width pulses and varied-width pulses have almost the same efficiency for both the first-order and the second-order Raman sideband cooling. The optimized strategy is verified experimentally. A single ${^{25}\mathrm{Mg}}^{+}$ ion is trapped in a linear Paul trap and Raman sideband cooled, and the achieved average vibrational quantum numbers under different cooling strategies are evaluated. A good agreement between the experimental result and the simulation result is obtained.

A Single Laser System for Ground-State Cooling of 25Mg+

Boerge Hemmerling, Florian Gebert, Yong Wan +2 more

We present a single solid-state laser system to cool, coherently manipulate and detect $^{25}$Mg$^+$ ions. Coherent manipulation is accomplished by coupling two hyperfine ground state levels using a pair of far-detuned Raman laser beams. Resonant light for Doppler cooling and detection is derived from the same laser source by means of an electro-optic modulator, generating a sideband which is resonant with the atomic transition. We demonstrate ground-state cooling of one of the vibrational modes of the ion in the trap using resolved-sideband cooling. The cooling performance is studied and discussed by observing the temporal evolution of Raman-stimulated sideband transitions. The setup is a major simplification over existing state-of-the-art systems, typically involving up to three separate laser sources.

Systematic study of tunable laser cooling for trapped-ion experiments

A. P. Kulosa, Прудников Олег Николаевич, Daniel Vadlejch +5 more

Abstract We report on a comparative analysis of quenched sideband cooling in trapped ions. We introduce a theoretical approach for time-efficient simulation of the temporal cooling characteristics and derive the optimal conditions providing fast laser cooling into the ion’s motional ground state. The simulations were experimentally benchmarked with a single 172Yb+ ion confined in a linear Paul trap. Sideband cooling was carried out on a narrow quadrupole transition, enhanced with an additional clear-out laser for controlling the effective linewidth of the cooling transition. Quench cooling was thus for the first time studied in the resolved sideband, intermediate and semi-classical regime. We discuss the non-thermal distribution of Fock states during laser cooling and reveal its impact on time dilation shifts in optical atomic clocks.

Doppler laser cooling and vibrational spectrum of 24Mg+ ions in a linear Paul trap

Ilia V. Zalivako, Alexander S. Borisenko, Ilya A. Semerikov +2 more

We report results on the laser cooling of 24 Mg + ions to temperatures below 80 mK in a linear quadrupole Paul trap. A method has been demonstrated for determining secular frequencies of ions using amplitude modulation of cooling light, and vibrational spectra of simple ion crystals have been investigated.

Ground state cooling, quantum state engineering and study of decoherence of ions in Paul traps

Ferdinand Schmidt‐Kaler, Christian F. Roos, Hanns‐Christoph Nägerl +12 more

We investigate single ions of 40Ca+ in Paul traps for quantum information processing. Superpositions of the S½ electronic ground state and the metastable D5/2; state are used to implement a qubit. Laser light on the S½ ↔ D5/2 transition is used for the manipulation of the ion's quantum state. We apply sideband cooling to the ion and reach the ground state of vibration with up to 99.9% probability. Starting from this Fock state (n = 0), we demonstrate coherent quantum state manipulation. A large number of Rabi oscillations and a ms-coherence time is observed. Motional heating is measured to be as low as one vibrational quantum in 190ms. We also report on ground state cooling of two ions.
