Abstract

Abstract Four-wave mixing (FWM) of ultrashort laser pulses in a highly nonlinear photonic-crystal fiber is shown to provide a multimodal source of broadband quantum states of light. In the regime of low pump powers, generation of two-photon states and heralded single photons with a bandwidth up to ≈6 THz is demonstrated within an FWM-sideband tunability range of ≈55 THz. In the modality of heralded single-photon generation, three-detector measurements of the conditional second-order correlation function reveal a strong antibunching in the signal-photon channel, with more than 99.2% of the signal counts identified as truly single-photon states. At high pump powers, two-detector signal-idler correlation function measurements indicate broadband bright squeezed vacuum generation.

Bright ultra-broadband fiber-based biphoton source

Maksim A. Smirnov, Ilya V. Fedotov, A. M. Smirnova +3 more

In this Letter, we report a first, to the best of our knoqledge, experimental realization of a bright ultra-broadband (180 THz) fiber-based biphoton source with widely spectrally separated signal and idler photons. Such a two-photon source is realized due to the joint use of a broadband two-loop phase-matching of interacting light waves and high optical nonlinearity of a silica-core photonic crystal fiber. The high performance of the developed fiber source identifies it as an important and useful tool for a wide range of optical quantum applications.

Characterization of a fiber-based source of heralded single photons

Lei Yang, Xiaoxin Ma, Xueshi Guo +2 more

Starting from the derived expression of the Bogoliubov transformation for a broadband pulsed pump, we theoretically characterize the heralded single-photon source, which is based on the signal and idler photon pairs produced in optical fiber via spontaneous four-wave mixing by a pulsed pump. The second-order intensity correlation function, heralding efficiency, indistinguishability, and brightness of the heralded single photons as a function of source parameters, are analyzed and discussed. The validity of the theoretical analysis and calculations are confirmed by the experimental results. The investigations are useful for optimizing the source parameters and for developing a single-photon source suitable for quantum-information processing.

Characterizing heralded single photons with an all-fiber source of photon pairs

Lei Yang, Xiaoxin Ma, Xueshi Guo +2 more

Based on the signal and idler photon pairs produced in a piece of high nonlinear fiber by a pulsed pump, we characterize the heralded single photon source from both the theoretical and experimental aspects. In the theory model, started from the derived expression of Bogoliubov transformation for a broadband pulsed pump, the second-order intensity correlation function $g_c^{(2)}(0)$, heralding efficiency $H$, indistinguishability and brightness of the heralded single photons as a function of source parameters are analyzed and discussed. In the experiments, using several kinds of combinations of the source parameters, the values of $g_c^{(2)}(0)$ and $H$ are measured and compared. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical predictions. The investigations are useful for optimizing the parameters and for developing a single photon source suitable for quantum information processing.

Ultrabright and narrowband intra-fiber biphoton source at ultralow pump power

Alexander Bruns, Chia-Yu Hsu, Sergiy Stryzhenko +5 more

Abstract Nonclassical photon sources of high brightness are key components of quantum communication technologies. We here demonstrate the generation of narrowband, nonclassical photon pairs by employing spontaneous four-wave mixing in an optically-dense ensemble of cold atoms within a hollow-core fiber. The brightness of our source approaches the limit of achievable generated spectral brightness at which successive photon pairs start to overlap in time. For a generated spectral brightness per pump power of up to 2 × 10 9 pairs/(s MHz mW) we observe nonclassical correlations at pump powers below 100 nW and a narrow bandwidth of 2 π × 6.5 MHz. In this regime we demonstrate that our source can be used as a heralded single-photon source. By further increasing the brightness we enter the regime where successive photon pairs start to overlap in time and the cross-correlation approaches a limit corresponding to thermal statistics. Our approach of combining the advantages of atomic ensembles and waveguide environments is an important step toward photonic quantum networks of ensemble-based elements.

Bright seeded and quasi-continuous two-mode intensity squeezing in commercial fiber

Elad Zehavi, Alon Bernstein, Michal Natan +4 more

Squeezed states of light enable optical measurements with sensitivity beyond the shot noise limit of detection with classical light. Optical fibers represent a major potential platform for quantum squeezed sensing due to the extremely low loss and perfect single-spatial-mode operation. In this work, we demonstrate two-mode intensity squeezing directly within a commercially available optical fiber, based on a four-wave mixing process. The setup operates in a quasi-continuous-wave mode using 15 ns long pulses and relies on standard laser diode sources, telecommunication electro-optic modulators, and simple photo-detectors. The process is seeded by a coherent signal input, generating bright squeezed output states. Absolute noise reduction by 4 dB below the classical shot-noise limit is detected directly with no post-processing, for output signal and idler pulses of 2.4 × 10 6 photons in average. The results are applicable to quantum interferometry over fiber using simple, readily available components.

A heralded single-photon source implemented with second-order nonlinear photonic crystals

Hiroo Azuma

Abstract We study implementing a heralded single-photon source with second-order nonlinear photonic crystals. Injecting pump and signal light beams into a one-dimensional photonic crystal composed of a material with a large second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ ( 2 ) , we can transform the coherent incident signal light into squeezed light. Preparing two squeezed light beams by this method and input them into two ports of a 50-50 beam splitter independently, we can transform them into a two-mode squeezed state. Because those two modes of photons share entanglement, a single photon of the one mode is emitted with a high probability on the condition of the single-photon detection of the other mode as a heralding signal. We evaluate the efficiency and the second-order intensity correlation function g ( 2 ) ( 0 ) for this heralded single-photon source. Moreover, we examine changes in the efficiency and g ( 2 ) ( 0 ) when we assume that the single-photon detector for the heralding signal is imperfect. For a specific concrete example, we consider a case where the nonlinear medium is lithium niobate LiNbO 3 and the frequency of the incident signal light is on the order of 1014 Hz.
