Abstract

In this Letter, we report a first, to the best of our knoqledge, experimental realization of a bright ultra-broadband (180 THz) fiber-based biphoton source with widely spectrally separated signal and idler photons. Such a two-photon source is realized due to the joint use of a broadband two-loop phase-matching of interacting light waves and high optical nonlinearity of a silica-core photonic crystal fiber. The high performance of the developed fiber source identifies it as an important and useful tool for a wide range of optical quantum applications.

Broadband quantum light on a fiber-optic platform: from biphotons and heralded single photons to bright squeezed vacuum

Abstract Four-wave mixing (FWM) of ultrashort laser pulses in a highly nonlinear photonic-crystal fiber is shown to provide a multimodal source of broadband quantum states of light. In the regime of low pump powers, generation of two-photon states and heralded single photons with a bandwidth up to ≈6 THz is demonstrated within an FWM-sideband tunability range of ≈55 THz. In the modality of heralded single-photon generation, three-detector measurements of the conditional second-order correlation function reveal a strong antibunching in the signal-photon channel, with more than 99.2% of the signal counts identified as truly single-photon states. At high pump powers, two-detector signal-idler correlation function measurements indicate broadband bright squeezed vacuum generation.

A broadband high spectral brightness fiber-based two-photon source

Jingyun Fan, Alan L. Migdall

After characterizing the Raman scattering in a fused silica polarization-maintaining microstructure optical fiber, we built a fiber-based two-photon light source of high spectral brightness, broad spectral range, and very low noise background at room temperature. The resulting bright low-noise two-photon light can be used for a number of quantum information applications.

Fiber-based biphoton source with ultrabroad frequency tunability

Santiago Lopez-Huidobro, Markus Lippl, Nicolas Y. Joly +1 more

Tunable biphotons are highly important for a wide range of quantum applications. For some applications, especially interesting are cases where two photons of a pair are far apart in frequency. Here, we report a tunable biphoton source based on a xenon-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. Tunability is achieved by adjusting the pressure of the gas inside the fiber. This allows us to tailor the dispersion landscape of the fiber, overcoming the principal limitations of solid-core fiber-based biphoton sources. We report a maximum tunability of 120 THz for a pressure range of 4 bar with a continuous shift of 30 THz/bar. At 21 bar, the photons of a pair are separated by more than one octave. Despite the large separation, both photons have large bandwidths. At 17 bar, they form a very broad (110 THz) band around the frequency of the pump.

Ultra-broadband non-degenerate guided-wave bi-photon source in the near and mid-infrared

Franz Roeder, Abira Gnanavel, René Pollmann +6 more

Abstract The latest applications in ultrafast quantum metrology require bright, broadband bi-photon sources with one of the photons in the mid-infrared and the other in the visible to near infrared. However, existing sources based on bulk crystals are limited in brightness due to the short interaction length and only allow for limited dispersion engineering. Here, we present an integrated PDC source based on a Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide that generates broadband bi-photons with central wavelengths at 860 nm and 2800 nm . Their spectral bandwidth exceeds 25 THz and is achieved by simultaneous matching of the group velocities (GVs) and cancellation of GV dispersion for the signal and idler field. We provide an intuitive understanding of the process by studying our source’s behavior at different temperatures and pump wavelengths, which agrees well with simulations.

Bright phase-stable broadband fiber-based source of polarization-entangled photon pairs

Jingyun Fan, Matthew D. Eisaman, Alan L. Migdall

We describe an achromatic, phase-stable, broadband source of polarization-entangled photon pairs with high spectral brightness that uses four-wave mixing in a fiber Sagnac interferometer. We achieved a polarization-entangled two-photon coincidence rate of $7\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kHz}$ per $0.5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{THz}$ $(0.9\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm})$ of bandwidth per $300\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\mu}}\mathrm{W}$ of average pump power. At this rate, we observed two-photon fringe interference visibilities greater than 97%, over a $10\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{THz}$ $(\ensuremath{\approx}21\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm})$ spectral range. We measured violations of Bell's inequality by more than 22 standard deviations for each of the four Bell states in less than $3\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{minutes}$ per state. The high spectral brightness $(26\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kHz}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{nm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{mW}}^{\ensuremath{-}1})$, large tunable wavelength range, single spatial mode, and phase stability make this source a promising candidate for a wide range of quantum-information applications.

Bright photonic crystal fiber source of photon pairs in visible-telecom band

A. F. Khairullin, Maksim A. Smirnov, Ilya V. Fedotov +2 more

An actual task of quantum communications over long distances is the creation of a bright source of photon pairs operating at standard wavelengths of fiber optic communication lines. In this work, we experimentally investigated the spectral and correlation characteristics of photon pairs generated on the phenomenon of spontaneous four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear photonic-crystal fiber with a wavelength of one of the photons near 1.5 μm. The demonstrated source can be used as an efficient single photon generator at a telecommunications wavelength with prediction and tuning over a wide spectral range.
