Abstract

An analysis of patent applications filed in the European Patent Office Global Patent Index database is presented for quantum computing, quantum key distribution, quantum entanglement, and cold atom interferometry. We address methodological issues and show how patenting trends evolved in the last two decades, identifying main players and applications areas.

Patent Analysis of Global Quantum Cryptography

With the rapid development of Internet based on information technology and the approach of the quantum age, countries pay more and more attention to the research of quantum cryptography and quantum communication. The quantum cryptography patent data can well reflect the pro- gress and achievement in quantum cryptography field of a country, which reveals the relevant scientific and technological strength and national defense strength of a country. This paper makes a detailed analysis of patent applications from 2000 to 2017 in four major quantum research and development regions in the world, namely the United States, the European Union, Japan and China. The analysis is carried out from three aspects of patent application time, patent application organization and patent classification number. And then the research results in quantum cryptography field of the countries above are summarized and the research trends are predicted. These provide an intuitive and detailed data support for the analysis of a country’s scientific and technological strength. Moreover, it can be an important reference for further research on developments of global quantum technology and the national quantum strategic planning.

Quantum Technologies: A Review of the Patent Landscape

M. Edington Alex

Quantum Technologies is a term that is getting broader with every passing year. Nanotechnology and electronics operate in this realm. With the invention of industry-disrupting algorithms like Shor's algorithm that can break RSA encryption on a quantum computer and Quantum Key Distribution, which offers unconditional security in theory, investment is pouring in. Here we taxonomize and analyze 48,577 patents in this area from 2015 to present captured with a comprehensive query in Relecura's patent database. The author's subject experience, along with the company's AI-based tools and scholarly literature, were utilized to make this highly subjective choice of taxonomy. Though most Patent Landscape Analysis Reports consider a single technology, geography, or company, we have tried to give a holistic overview of these technologies as a whole due to their collaborative and intertwined nature. The physics of each technology and its role in the industry is briefly explained where possible.

A Deep Inside Quantum Technology Industry Trends and Future Implications

Dedy Septono Catur Putranto, Rini Wisnu Wardhani, Janghyun Ji +1 more

Quantum technology has garnered considerable attention for its transformative potential across various industries since the early 2000s, precipitating a surge in quantum start-ups and substantial investments worldwide. However, comprehensive research on quantum technology in industries, particularly start-ups in the quantum field, remains limited. This study analyzes a dataset of 1,200 quantum start-ups from 40 countries, specifically focusing on 430 notable active start-ups. The analysis provides a thorough perspective on the industry’s progress, including trends in growth, geographical distribution, industry categorization, and investment patterns. The study categorizes start-ups into five domains: quantum computing, communication, sensing, hardware, and software. The analysis further captures the progress made by ten prominent quantum start-ups, six major technology companies, and quantum consortia regarding their technological innovations and strategic partnerships. We provide a comparative analysis of prior research to identify current conditions and future implications validated by notable studies, focusing on key parameters such as dataset scope, geographical distribution, growth trends, industry categorization, taxonomy, main interests in quantum fields, key players, and ecosystem identification. This approach underscores the dynamic growth of the quantum industry, which will drive future advancements.

Quantum technologies in space

Recently, the European Commission supported by many European countries has announced large investments towards the commercialization of quantum technology (QT) to address and mitigate some of the biggest challenges facing today's digital era - e.g. secure communication and computing power. For more than two decades the QT community has been working on the development of QTs, which promise landmark breakthroughs leading to commercialization in various areas. The ambitious goals of the QT community and expectations of EU authorities cannot be met solely by individual initiatives of single countries, and therefore, require a combined European effort of large and unprecedented dimensions comparable only to the Galileo or Copernicus programs. Strong international competition calls for a coordinated European effort towards the development of QT in and for space, including research and development of technology in the areas of communication and sensing. Here, we aim at summarizing the state of the art in the development of quantum technologies which have an impact in the field of space applications. Our goal is to outline a complete framework for the design, development, implementation, and exploitation of quantum technology in space.
