Abstract

We demonstrate the possibility of measuring the forbidden 1S-2S transition frequency (121 nm) of hydrogen atom by the method of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) when atom from the 1S level moves to the 2S level through the intermediate 3P level. The frequency of the pumping field (103 nm) is close to the frequency of transition 3P-1S, and the frequency of the stimulated scattering (656 nm) - to the frequency of transition 3P-2S.

Precision Measurements of Forbidden Transition Frequencies Using Stimulated Raman Scattering

E. V. Baklanov, Sergey M Kobtsev, А. В. Тайченачев

Abstract The possibility of precision measurements of frequencies of forbidden transitions of cold atoms in a trap using stimulated Raman scattering is shown. Transition 1S–2S in a hydrogen atom, in which the atom passes from level 1S to level 2S via intermediate level 3P is considered in detail. In this case, the frequency of the pump field (103 nm) is close to the frequency of the 3P–1S transition, while the stimulated scattering frequency (656 nm) is close to the frequency of the 3P–2S transition.

P.V. Pokasov, А. В. Тайченачев, E. V. Baklanov

In this paper, the possibility of measuring the forbidden 21S0 – 23S1 transition frequency (1557 nm) of a helium atom by the method of stimulated Raman scattering through the intermediate 23P1 level is demonstrated. The transition is important for the spectroscopy of the helium atom because it relates the singlet and triplet parts of the spectrum.

Precision measurement of the forbidden 21S0 – 23S1 transition frequency in a helium atom

We demonstrate the possibility of measuring the forbidden 2 1 S 0 – 2 3 S 1 transition frequency ( λ = 1557 nm) of a helium atom by the method of stimulated Raman scattering through the intermediate 2 3 P 1 level. Singlet (2 1 S 0 ) and triplet (2 3 S 1 ) states have long lifetimes of 20 ms and 8000 s, respectively. The transition is important for the spectroscopy of the helium atom because it relates the singlet and triplet parts of the spectrum.

Resonant Stimulated Raman Scattering from the 23S–11S Forbidden Transition in a Helium Atom

E. V. Baklanov, P.V. Pokasov, А. В. Тайченачев

Resonant stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) from the $${{2}^{3}}S{-} {{1}^{1}}S$$ forbidden transition in a helium atom (62.6 nm) via the intermediate $${{2}^{3}}{{P}_{1}}$$ level has been considered. The metastable $${{2}^{3}}S$$ state has the lowest energy in the triplet spectral region (He*), and the ground state is $${{1}^{1}}S$$ . The reduced kinetic equations for the density matrix, which are used to analyze the SRS resonance, have been derived. The expressions for the field broadening and resonance shift are obtained, the Doppler broadening is taken into account, and numerical estimations are performed.

Resonant stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) on the 23S-11S forbidden transition of the helium atom (62.6 nm) through the intermediate 23P1 level is considered. The 23S metastable state has the lowest energy in the triplet part of the spectrum (He *), and the 11S state is the ground state. For the density matrix, shortened kinetic equations are derived, which are used to analyze the SRS resonance. Inversionless generation of radiation in stimulated Raman and hyper-Raman scattering at allowed transitions in atoms

Victor P. Kochanov

The theory of stimulated Raman and hyper-Raman scattering involving resonance transitions to the ground states of atoms is presented, where the atoms are modeled by the three-level cascade quantum system. The possibility of efficient inversionless generation of radiation is shown for all three transitions participating in the stimulated Raman scattering and for the two electric-dipole allowed transitions in the hyper-Raman scattering. The existence conditions for such generation are determined depending on intensities of the three waves participating in closed-loop wave mixing, their total phase, and pump frequency detuning from the frequency of the dipole-forbidden transition. A new method of remote sensing of atomic components of the atmosphere based on inversionless generation is proposed, which may have significantly higher detection sensitivity as compared to traditional fluorescence technique.
