Inversionless generation of radiation in stimulated Raman and hyper-Raman scattering at allowed transitions in atoms

Abstract

The theory of stimulated Raman and hyper-Raman scattering involving resonance transitions to the ground states of atoms is presented, where the atoms are modeled by the three-level cascade quantum system. The possibility of efficient inversionless generation of radiation is shown for all three transitions participating in the stimulated Raman scattering and for the two electric-dipole allowed transitions in the hyper-Raman scattering. The existence conditions for such generation are determined depending on intensities of the three waves participating in closed-loop wave mixing, their total phase, and pump frequency detuning from the frequency of the dipole-forbidden transition. A new method of remote sensing of atomic components of the atmosphere based on inversionless generation is proposed, which may have significantly higher detection sensitivity as compared to traditional fluorescence technique.

Generation of undamped stokes radiation under resonant pumping of the dipole-forbidden transition in a Ξ-atom

Victor P. Kochanov

We have developed a theory of the nonlinear ring interaction of three intense fields in the scheme of resonant Raman scattering on the dipole-allowed transition from the ground state to the first excited state of a cascade three-level quantum system. We show that the backward Stokes radiation generated by a pump resonant to the dipole-forbidden transition can be used in remote laser sensing of metal vapors.

Stimulated collision-induced resonance Raman scattering

V.M. Arutunyan, N. Sh. Badanyan, N. V. Shakhnazaryan

The passage of strong monochromatic laser radiation through a resonance medium consisting of three-level atoms is investigated. It is shown that if collisions are taken into account in the scattered waves the resonances at combination frequencies occur to first order in the laser field intensity. A numerical analysis of the dependence of the stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS) components' gain factors on the pump frequency is carried out. The dispersion curves of the SERS components' gain (absorption) factors for fixed values of pump frequency and intensity are plotted.

Effect of the pump absorption on generation of infrared stimulated electronic Raman scattering in alkali-metal vapors

A. I. Agafonov, G. G. Grigoryan, Nikolay V Znamenskiy +5 more

The main properties of infrared stimulated electronic Raman scattering (SERS) at the 6 2 S 1/2 -7 2 S 1/2, 3/2 transitions in cesium atoms are studied theoretically and experimentally as functions of the atomic concentration, which was varied from 10 11 to 10 16 cm −3 . It is found that the efficiency of generation of Stokes radiation strongly depends on one-photon absorption of the pump radiation tuned near frequencies of the 6 2 S 1/2 -7 2 P 1/2, 3/2 transitions. By using the equation for the density matrix, which describes the evolution of a three-level system, the theory of resonance excitation of IR radiation upon one-photon absorption at an adjacent transition is developed. The theory describes well the main features of IR SERS in alkali-metal vapors.

Efficient hyper-Raman scattering in resonant coherent media

Ying Wu, Lingling Wen, Yifu Zhu

We propose and analyze a hyper-Raman scheme for generation of coherent light in a five-level atomic system based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that EIT suppresses linear and nonlinear photon absorption and enables the hyper-Raman process to proceed through real, near-resonant intermediate states. The scheme greatly enhances hyper-Raman efficiency and may be used for generating short-wavelength radiation at low pump intensities.

Precision Measurements of Forbidden Transition Frequencies Using Stimulated Raman Scattering

E. V. Baklanov, Sergey M Kobtsev, А. В. Тайченачев

Abstract The possibility of precision measurements of frequencies of forbidden transitions of cold atoms in a trap using stimulated Raman scattering is shown. Transition 1S–2S in a hydrogen atom, in which the atom passes from level 1S to level 2S via intermediate level 3P is considered in detail. In this case, the frequency of the pump field (103 nm) is close to the frequency of the 3P–1S transition, while the stimulated scattering frequency (656 nm) is close to the frequency of the 3P–2S transition.

Stimulated Raman scattering under resonance illumination conditions

Vladimir D Taranukhin

A new variant of active Raman spectroscopy is proposed. Instead of two-frequency pumping, radiation in resonance with the scattering transition is used and a static electric field is applied simultaneously. This variant may have an advantage over the conventional method in the case of a large Stokes shift which is found, for example, in the Raman scattering due to electronic transitions. An analysis is made of the dynamics of the interacting waves and the optimal length of nonlinear medium to which a static electric field should be applied is determined.
