Research on nonlinear and quantum optics at the photonics andquantum information group of the University of Valladolid

Pedro Chamorro‐Posada, Julio Sánchez-Curto, Juan Carlos García-Escartín +7 more

We outline the main research lines in Nonlinear and Quantum Optics of the Group of Photonics and Quantum Information at the University of Valladolid. These works focus on Optical Solitons, Quantum Information using Photonic Technologies and the development of new materials for Nonlinar Optics. The investigations on optical solitons cover both temporal solitons in dispersion managed fiber links and nonparaxial spatial solitons as described by the Nonlinear Helmholtz Equation. Within the Quantum Information research lines of the group, the studies address new photonic schemes for quantum computation and the multiplexing of quantum data. The investigations of the group are, to a large extent, based on intensive and parallel computations. Some associated numerical techniques for the development of the activities described are briefly sketched.

Phase separation of vector solitons in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 condensates

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We study the phase separation in three-component bright vector solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled hyperfine spin $F=1$ ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate upon an increase of the strength of spin-orbit (SO) coupling ${p}_{x}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{z}$ above a critical value, where ${p}_{x}$ is the linear momentum and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{z}$ is the $z$ component of the spin-1 matrix. The bright vector solitons are demonstrated to be mobile and dynamically stable. The collision between two such vector solitons is found to be elastic at all velocities with the conservation of density of each vector soliton. The two colliding vector solitons repel at small separation and at very small colliding velocity, they come close and bounce back with the same velocity without ever encountering each other. This repulsion produced by SO coupling is responsible for the phase separation in a vector soliton for large strengths of SO coupling. The collision dynamics is found to be completely insensitive to the relative phase of the colliding solitons. However, in the absence of SO coupling, at very small velocity, the two colliding vector solitons attract each other and form a vector soliton molecule and the collision dynamics is sensitive to the relative phase as in scalar solitons. The present investigation is carried out through a numerical solution and an analytic variational approximation of the underlying mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Weak-light superluminal vector solitons in a room-temperature four-level active-Raman-gain medium

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to generate vector optical solitons in a four-level active-Raman-gain medium. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from that using optical fibers and that via electromagnetically induced transparency, is capable of achieving robust vector optical solitons with superluminal propagating velocity. We demonstrate that such vector optical solitons can be generated at room temperature and with very low light intensity. We investigate also the interaction between two superluminal vector optical solitons and point out that their elastic and inelastic colliding properties can be used to design rapidly responding optical soliton switching and logic gates.

We study the phase separation in three-component bright vector solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled hyperfine spin F=1F=1F=1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate upon an increase of the strength of spin-orbit (SO) coupling ${p}_{x}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{z}$ above a critical value, where px{p}_{x}px is the linear momentum and ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{z}$ is the zzz component of the spin-1 matrix. The bright vector solitons are demonstrated to be mobile and dynamically stable. The collision between two such vector solitons is found to be elastic at all velocities with the conservation of density of each vector soliton.
