Abstract

We outline the main research lines in Nonlinear and Quantum Optics of the Group of Photonics and Quantum Information at the University of Valladolid. These works focus on Optical Solitons, Quantum Information using Photonic Technologies and the development of new materials for Nonlinar Optics. The investigations on optical solitons cover both temporal solitons in dispersion managed fiber links and nonparaxial spatial solitons as described by the Nonlinear Helmholtz Equation. Within the Quantum Information research lines of the group, the studies address new photonic schemes for quantum computation and the multiplexing of quantum data. The investigations of the group are, to a large extent, based on intensive and parallel computations. Some associated numerical techniques for the development of the activities described are briefly sketched.

Integrated nonlinear photonics

Jun Rong Ong

This chapter reviews the developments in the field of integrated nonlinear photonics. It discusses the use of silicon for integrated nonlinear photonics. The field of integrated photonics grew in parallel with the emergence of optical fiber communications and micro-electronics fabrication. This led to the development of active and passive devices such as diode lasers, optical modulators, and planar light wave circuits consisting of filters, couplers, and multiplexers. Integrated photonics technology has recently begun to impact the quantum optics community, forming a distinct area of research termed quantum photonics. With its capacity for complex large-scale on-chip photonic circuits, integrated quantum photonics has been suggested as a solution to the challenge of scaling increasingly complex quantum optical experiments and devices. Quantum information technologies that explicitly tap into the unique properties of quantum systems are predicted to greatly outperform their classical counterparts.

Mode Analysis of Quantum Nonlinear Propagation of Ultrashort Laser Pulse in an Optical Fiber

Aruto Hosaka, Fumihiko Kannari

We develop a quantum multimode theory of nonlinear propagation in optical fibers. Using the developed theory, we numerically study potential of parallelism of fiber-based squeezed state generation by soliton-like and zero-dispersion propagations.

Integrated Photonic Multiplexing for Quantum Information

Ben Haylock

Herewithin we present multiplexed integrated photonics as a realisable route to large-scale quantum technologies. Quantum photonics is one many platforms for experimental demonstrations of quantum information science. The technological advantages afforded by the combination of integrated photonic circuits with multiplexing techniques can enable performance enhancements to make photonics a leading infrastructure for implementation of real-world quantum information systems. For this purpose, we create integrated circuits to solve technical challenges in the fields of quantum cryptography, discrete variable and continuous variable quantum computation. These circuits were fabricated in a facility developed at Griffith University, Centre for Quantum Dynamics, for the production of annealed and reverse proton exchange waveguides in congruent lithium niobate and have found applications across the fields of quantum optics and cryptography. We develop and demonstrate the first integrated many-mode active optical demultiplexing of single photons from a solid-state source. This scheme enables the production of a multiphoton Fock state across multiple spatial modes from a single high brightness solid-state source with temporal indistinguishability. This work addressed a major hurdle in the development of photonic quantum computers, namely generation of a large number of indistinguishable single photons on demand. To perform the demultiplexing of single photons we develop two key technologies; a high-speed 1:4 integrated photonic switch and a many channel arbitrary pulse sequence generator. Cryptography as a field is increasingly reliant on quantum random number generators for added security. With increased demand comes a requirement for higher bitrate random number generators, and as such we demonstrate multiplexing of a random number generation scheme based on measurements of quantum vacuum fluctuations. Furthermore, we show an increased level of security at high bitrates by implementing a new signal processing scheme We demonstrate integrated generation, manipulation and homodyning of squeezed light on a single chip for the first time. This scheme is the first successful demonstration of full integration of all the major components needed for continuous variable quantum computation in a temporally multiplexed architecture. These results represent contributions to several fields of study, demonstrating the advantages of integrated quantum photonic multiplexing, and are of interest to the quantum computing, information security, integrated optics, and electronic control communities.

3D soliton-like bullets in nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates

Tatyana Leonidovna Belyaeva, Akira Hasegawa, L. M. Kovachev +1 more

Mathematical similarities and parallels between two different physical objects, optical solitons and matter-wave solitons, both described by similar mathematical models: the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) model, open the possibility to study both systems in parallel and because of the obvious complexity of experiments with matter-wave solitons, offer outstanding possibilities in studies of BEC system by performing experiments in the nonlinear optical system and vise versa. In this report we briefly overview recent theoretical studies of the existence and stability of 3D solitons. With contributions from major groups who have pioneered research in this field, the report describes the historical development of the subject, provides a background to the associated nonlinear optical processes, the generation mechanisms of soliton bullets. The main features of nonautonomous matter-wave solitons near the Feshbach resonance with continuously tuned scattering length are investigated. We focus on the most physically important situations where the applied magnetic field is varying in time linearly and periodically. In nonlinear optical applications, this kind of periodic graded-index nonlinear structure with alternating waveguiding and antiwaveguiding segments can be used to simulate different and complicated processes in the total scenario of matterwave soliton bullets generation.
