Abstract

We develop a quantum multimode theory of nonlinear propagation in optical fibers. Using the developed theory, we numerically study potential of parallelism of fiber-based squeezed state generation by soliton-like and zero-dispersion propagations.

Multimode quantum theory of nonlinear propagation in optical fibers

Aruto Hosaka, Taiki Kawamori, Fumihiko Kannari

We theoretically reveal the potential of the parallelism of squeezed state generation by nonlinear pulse propagation in an optical fiber. Starting from a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation coupling with phonon modes that cause Raman noise, we develop a multimode quantum theory of nonlinear propagation in an optical fiber. Based on our proposed method, we numerically simulate fiber nonlinear propagation in two conditions: solitonlike and zero-group-delay-dispersion (zero-GVD) propagation. As a result, we find that zero-GVD propagation enables the large-scale parallel generation of squeezed states relative to solitonlike propagation owing to the broadband phase matching of the four-wave mixing process.

We propose a method to analyze the quantum correlations formed among the longitudinal modes of ultrafast laser pulses launched into an optical fiber and numerically demonstrate that parallel squeezed state generation can be achieved by a zero-dispersion fiber.

Quantum theory of bragg solitons: a linearized approach

Ray‐Kuang Lee, Yinchieh Lai

The fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with Kerr nonlinearity exhibit optical soliton like phenomena known as the Bragg solitons. Due to the high dispersion of FBGs near the band edge, optical solitons in the anomalous dispersion side is produced when the input pulse has suitable pulse-width and peak intensity. The Bragg solitons belong to the class of bi-directional pulse propagation problems. In this paper, general quantum theory for bi-directional pulse propagation problems is developed and applied to the Bragg solitons. The output Bragg soliton pulses are quantum-mechanically squeezed and their squeezing ratios calculated.

Quantum theory of soliton propagation in an optical fiber using the Hartree approximation

Ewan M. Wright

The quantum theory of pulse propagation in a nonlinear optical fiber is presented using the time-dependent Hartree approximation. This formulation clarifies the connections between the quantum theory of soliton propagation and single-mode theories that have been used to describe the effects of self-phase modulation. An approximate solution is obtained for coherent-state soliton pulses that gives excellent agreement with numerical calculations for the quadrature phase amplitudes of the field. These amplitudes are found to undergo a series of collapses and revivals with propagation; the first collapse is related to the appearance of interference fringes in the field Q function.

Observation of Multimode Quantum Correlations in Fiber Optical Solitons

S. Spälter, Natalia Korolkova, Friedrich König +2 more

Quantum correlations of photon numbers in different spectral components of ultrashort optical solitons have been observed experimentally. These correlations are crucial for the understanding and characterization of the internal quantum structure of soliton pulses and contribute significantly to soliton squeezing by spectral filtering. The accessible information on the nonclassical state of the correlated spectral components is discussed with the example of two modes. The method may be generalized to obtain a complete quantum description of a multimode field.

Nonlinear quantum behavior of ultrashort-pulse optical parametric oscillators

Tatsuhiro Onodera, Edwin Ng, Chris Gustin +6 more

The quantum features of ultrashort-pulse optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) are investigated theoretically in the nonlinear regime near and above threshold. Viewing the pulsed OPO as a multimode open quantum system, we rigorously derive a general input-output model that features nonlinear coupling among many cavity (i.e., system) signal modes and a broadband single-pass (i.e., reservoir) pump field. Under appropriate assumptions, our model produces a Lindblad master equation with multimode nonlinear Lindblad operators describing two-photon dissipation and a multimode four-wave-mixing Hamiltonian describing a broadband, dispersive optical cascade, which we show is required to preserve causality. To simplify the multimode complexity of the model, we employ a supermode decomposition to perform numerical simulations in the regime where the pulsed supermodes experience strong single-photon nonlinearity. We find that the quantum nonlinear dynamics induces pump depletion as well as corrections to the below-threshold squeezing spectrum predicted by linearized models. We also observe the formation of non-Gaussian states with Wigner-function negativity and show that the multimode interactions with the pump, both dissipative and dispersive, can act as effective decoherence channels. Finally, we briefly discuss some experimental considerations for potentially observing such quantum nonlinear phenomena with ultrashort-pulse OPOs on nonlinear nanophotonic platforms.
