Abstract

Tensor network renormalization: Application to dynamic correlation functions and non-Hermitian systems

Ying-Jie Wei, Zheng‐Cheng Gu

In recent years, tensor network renormalization (TNR) has emerged as an efficient and accurate method for studying (1+1)D quantum systems or 2D classical systems using real-space renormalization group (RG) techniques. One notable application of TNR is its ability to extract central charge and conformal scaling dimensions for critical systems. In this paper, we present the implementation of the Loop-TNR algorithm, which allows for the computation of dynamical correlation functions. Our algorithm goes beyond traditional approaches by not only calculating correlations in the spatial direction, where the separation is an integer, but also in the temporal direction, where the time difference can contain decimal values. Our algorithm is designed to handle both imaginary-time and real-time correlations, utilizing a tensor network representation constructed from a path-integral formalism. Additionally, we highlight that the Loop-TNR algorithm can also be applied to investigate critical properties of non-Hermitian systems, an area that was previously inaccessible using density matrix renormalization group(DMRG) and matrix product state(MPS) based algorithms.

Finite-size and finite bond dimension effects of tensor network renormalization

Atsushi Ueda, Masaki Oshikawa

We propose a general procedure for extracting the running coupling constants of the underlying field theory of a given classical statistical model on a two-dimensional lattice, combining tensor network renormalization (TNR) and the finite-size scaling theory of conformal field theory. By tracking the coupling constants at each scale, we are able to visualize the renormalization group flow and demonstrate it with the classical Ising and three-state Potts models. Furthermore, utilizing this methodology, we reveal the limitations due to finite bond dimension $D$ on TNR applied to critical systems. We find that a finite correlation length is imposed by the finite bond dimension in TNR, and it can be attributed to an emergent relevant perturbation that respects the symmetries of the system. The correlation length shows the same power-law dependence on $D$ as the ``finite entanglement scaling'' of the matrix product states.

Takashi Irie

Developments in the Tensor Network — from Statistical Mechanics to Quantum Entanglement

Kouichi Okunishi, Tomotoshi Nishino, Hiroshi Ueda

Tensor networks (TNs) have become one of the most essential building blocks for various fields of theoretical physics such as condensed matter theory, statistical mechanics, quantum information, and quantum gravity. This review provides a unified description of a series of developments in the TN from the statistical mechanics side. In particular, we begin with the variational principle for the transfer matrix of the 2D Ising model, which naturally leads us to the matrix product state (MPS) and the corner transfer matrix (CTM). We then explain how the CTM can be evolved to such MPS-based approaches as density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and infinite time-evolved block decimation. We also elucidate that the finite-size DMRG played an intrinsic role for incorporating various quantum information concepts in subsequent developments in the TN. After surveying higher-dimensional generalizations like tensor product states or projected entangled pair states, we describe tensor renormalization groups (TRGs), which are a fusion of TNs and Kadanoff-Wilson type real-space renormalization groups, focusing on their fixed point structures. We then discuss how the difficulty in TRGs for critical systems can be overcome in the tensor network renormalization and the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz.
