Abstract

In order to solve the problem of how to protect the confidentiality and integrity of the distribution network control signal transmission security problem, this paper proposes a solution for point to point quantum secure optical fiber transmission system of distribution network control signal. The solution is to combine the quantum key distribution (QKD) with one-time pad to realize the secure communication of the point to point of the distribution network control and protection signal. The simulation results show that compared with the classical key distribution system, the proposed scheme has the advantage of confidentiality, integrity and identifiability, and has the uniqueness of tightness enhanced. The security support for the interoperability of intelligent distribution network equipment is enhanced, and the security and intelligence level of the distribution network system are improved.

Research on Automatically Switched Optical Network Security Based on Quantum Key Distribution

Yanyan Chen, Han Wenxian

In recent years, many eavesdropping and interception incidents against optical networks have shaken people's understanding of optical network security. The security of optical networks is attracting more and more researchers' attention. Aiming at the security problems in automatically switched optical network (ASON), this paper proposes a three-layer ASON secure communication model that separates the control plane, management plane and transport plane, and a quantum key distribution (QKD) mechanism based on the model. The ASON intelligent software controller divides the classic channel into three types of channels: quantum signal channel (QSCh), pulic interaction channel (PICh) and traditional data channels (TDCh), which are used for quantum transmission, quantum bit synchronization and data transmission separately, and the session key provided by the ASON intelligent network element through the QKD mechanism, The data is encrypted to achieve secure transmission of ASON classic channel data. The effects of QKD mechanism on ASON under different quantum signal source (QSS) code rate, load and intelligent network element (INU) node spacing are simulated and analyzed. The results show that the scheme guarantees the security of the system while increasing the finite delay and reducing the load and has practical feasibility.

О. К. Барановский, Иван Романович Гулаков, Евгений Викторович Василиу +2 more

The method and the scheme of multichannel quantum system of secure communication for transfer of confidential data on optical fiber are developed. The considered scheme combines quantum key distribution with quantum secure data transmission. Such approach does not give possibility to the eavesdropper to decipher that part of information, which he can receive before the detection. The suggested scheme provides higher security level of transferred confidential information, than known, which use traditional pro-tocols of symmetric enciphering in a combination to quantum key distribution. It is found out that for the transmission protected in such a way on optical fiber the choice of wavelengths of 850 and 1625 nanometers is optimum. It is found out that when using in such systems of the avalanche photo diode FD-115L it is possible to provide a speed of information transfer up to 0,8 Mbps in one channel. For increase in speed of transfer, it is proposed to use two and more channels of transfer.

Quantum Key Distribution Secured Optical Networks: A Survey

Purva Sharma, Anuj Agrawal, Vimal Bhatia +2 more

Increasing incidents of cyber attacks and evolution of quantum computing poses challenges to secure existing information and communication technologies infrastructure. In recent years, quantum key distribution (QKD) is being extensively researched, and is widely accepted as a promising technology to realize secure networks. Optical fiber networks carry a huge amount of information, and are widely deployed around the world in the backbone terrestrial, submarine, metro, and access networks. Thus, instead of using separate dark fibers for quantum communication, integration of QKD with the existing classical optical networks has been proposed as a cost-efficient solution, however, this integration introduces new research challenges. In this paper, we do a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art QKD secured optical networks, which is going to shape communication networks in the coming decades. We elucidate the methods and protocols used in QKD secured optical networks, and describe the process of key establishment. Various methods proposed in the literature to address the networking challenges in QKD secured optical networks, specifically, routing, wavelength and time-slot allocation (RWTA), resiliency, trusted repeater node (TRN) placement, QKD for multicast service, and quantum key recycling are described and compared in detail. This survey begins with the introduction to QKD and its advantages over conventional encryption methods. Thereafter, an overview of QKD is given including quantum bits, basic QKD system, QKD schemes and protocol families along with the detailed description of QKD process based on the Bennett and Brassard-84 (BB84) protocol as it is the most widely used QKD protocol in the literature. QKD system are also prone to some specific types of attacks, hence, we describe the types of quantum hacking attacks on the QKD system along with the methods used to prevent them. Subsequently, the process of point-to-point mechanism of QKD over an optical fiber link is described in detail using the BB84 protocol. Different architectures of QKD secured optical networks are described next. Finally, major findings from this comprehensive survey are summarized with highlighting open issues and challenges in QKD secured optical networks.

Strengthening the security of end-to-end communication in photonic networks

Sellami Ali, Benlahcene Djaouida

The burgeoning Internet and Internet-of-Things (IoT) sectors necessitate robust cryptographic methods to ensure data security, integrity, and authentication over unsecured networks. Traditional public key cryptography, reliant on computationally hard problems, faces threats from quantum computing advancements. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) presents a solution through the generation of unconditionally secure cryptographic keys using quantum mechanics. This paper explores the enhancement of QKD protocols to establish secure end-to-end communication in photonic networks. The proposed method involves a QKD system that generates two types of weak quantum signals: one with randomly varied intensity, polarization, or phase, and another with random frequency fluctuations. These signals are used to establish a shared key between a transmitter (Alice) and multiple receivers (Bobs) by measuring the quantum states. This dual signal approach enhances protection against Photon Number Splitting attacks and improves key length. Key Management Agents (KMAs) securely handle QKD-generated keys for data encryption before transmission, ensuring only intended recipients can decrypt the messages. The system leverages optical fiber or free-space optical links to transmit weak quantum signals and synchronization signals, facilitating key distribution even under existing network constraints. The proposed architecture allows for the secure exchange of cryptographic keys between Alice and multiple Bobs, ensuring private and authenticated communication over public channels. The approach mitigates potential eavesdropping by enabling the detection of any interception attempts through Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER) estimation. This study underscores the promise of QKD as a foundational element of future communication systems, providing uncrackable quantum keys and paving the way for secure photonic networks. Incremental advancements in quantum devices, networking, and infrastructure are essential to fully realize QKD's potential for robust cryptographic security.

Θωμάς Νίκας, Eleftherios Rousas, Georgios Pekridis +2 more

A Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) based Physical Layer Security (PLS) scheme (QKD-PLS) for optical fiber links is proposed and evaluated. In detail, a novel amplitude and phase scrambling technique for exploiting and seamlessly integrating high key rate QKD for the encryption of the modulation parameters of conventional complex modulation schemes like M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is described. The technique masks the information at the bit level and blocks unauthorized access to the higher layer encrypted bitstream. Scrambling is applied to both the preamble (pilot) and payload segments of the transmission frame, to prevent the eavesdroppers from performing vital receiver functions such as frame synchronization and channel estimation. Additionally, a practical Key Management System (KMS) which takes care of all synchronization processes is developed and introduced. Experimental transmission scenario in fiber links is also presented and depicts the efficacy of the QKD-PLS. Moreover, another advantage of QKD exploitation to the proposed solution comes from the application of kbps-rate QKD keys which feed pseudo-random number generators, to modify the broadband modulation symbols in one-time pad, therefore significantly improving data protection.
