Abstract

We demonstrate the experimental results of phase noise measurements on the coherent addition of signal and conjugate in a four wave mixing-based two-level phase quantizer and illustrate the requirement of the anti-correlation between the pumps.

Dual correlated pumping scheme for phase noise preservation in all-optical wavelength conversion

Aravind P. Anthur, Regan T. Watts, Kai Shi +3 more

We study the effect of transfer of phase noise in different four wave mixing schemes using a coherent phase noise measurement technique. The nature of phase noise transfer from the pump to the generated wavelengths is shown to be independent of the type of phase noise (1 / f or white noise frequency components). We then propose a novel scheme using dual correlated pumps to prevent the increase in phase noise in the conjugate wavelengths. The proposed scheme is experimentally verified by the all-optical wavelength conversion of a DQPSK signal at 10.7 GBaud.

Phase noise of four-wave mixing in semiconductor lasers

Rongqing Hui, Antonio Mecozzi

A simple theoretical analysis shows that the linewidth of the conjugate wave produced in four-wave mixing in semiconductor lasers is equal to the linewidth of the probe plus four times the linewidth of the pump. Experimental results in good agreement with the theory are presented. This result implies an enormous enhancement in the phase noise of the conjugate wave and sets a limitation on some practical applications of four-wave mixing.

Phase-conjugate four-wave mixing with partially coherent laser fields

Binh Do, Jongwhan Cha, Daniel S. Elliott +1 more

We present results of our experimental investigations of phase-conjugate four-wave mixing in a nearly Doppler-free, collisionless, two-level quantum system with a partially coherent non-Markovian laser field. The two components of the laser field---an intense pump and a weak, time-delayed probe---are derived from a single narrow-band cw laser source on which phase and frequency fluctuations conforming to the phase diffusion model are superimposed. We carry out these measurements using the ${D}_{2}$ transition in an optically pumped diffuse beam of atomic sodium. We vary the pump intensity, laser bandwidth, and temporal delay between the pump and probe, and measure the peak signal strength, the bandwidth, and the asymmetry of the four-wave-mixing spectrum. For comparison with our experimental results of the peak signal strength, we also analyze the same interaction numerically, through direct integration of the optical Bloch equations. The numerical results are in good agreement with the measurements.
