Abstract

This paper reports on the world's first optical frequency transfer link deployed and operated at an industrial level, and reaching state-of-the-art performances. In the frame of the REFIMEVE+ project supported in France by LPL (University of Paris 13) and SYRTE (LNE, Observatory of Paris) laboratories, a link between Paris and Lille is operational since October 2017 [1]. We report on a stability of the frequency transfer at the 10-20level in a real field environment. The various measurement campaigns validate the repeatability and the reliability of the optical frequency transfer, but also the ease of use and the robustness of the technology that has been developed.

REFIMEVE Fiber Network for Time and Frequency Dissemination and Applications

Etienne Cantin, Olivier Lopez, Nicolas Cahuzac +19 more

SummaryWe report the performance of REFIMEVE, a national metrological network of optical fiber links, using the academic fiber network. It enables the coherent dissemination of time and/or frequency reference signals from LNE-SYRTE to around 15 labs and more than 30 in the future. We will show the latest extensions of the network in the Paris urban area and all over France, the architecture required for such al network, and the progress in terms of robustness and uptime. We will also present some applications to precision measurements, in particular ultra-high-resolution molecular spectroscopy in the mid-infrared spectral range.

Long-distance frequency transfer over an urban fiber link using optical phase stabilization

Haifeng Jiang, F. Kéfélian, S. G. Crane +8 more

We transferred the frequency of an ultrastable laser over 86 km of urban fiber. The link is composed of two cascaded 43 km fibers connecting two laboratories, Laboratoire National de Métrologie et d'Essais-Systèmes de Référence Temps-Espace (LNE-SYRTE) and Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers (LPL), in the Paris area. In an effort to realistically demonstrate a link of 172 km without using spooled fiber extensions, we implemented a recirculation loop to double the length of the urban fiber link. The link is fed with a 1542 nm cavity-stabilized fiber laser having a sub-Hz linewidth. The fiber-induced phase noise is measured and cancelled with an all fiber-based interferometer using commercial off-the-shelf pigtailed telecommunication components. The compensated link shows an Allan deviation of a few 10−16 at one second and a few 10−19 at 10,000 seconds.

In-line extraction of an ultra-stable frequency signal over an optical fiber link

Anthony Bercy, Christian Chardonnet, Olivier Lopez +5 more

In the frame of the REFIMEVE+ project, aiming at disseminating an optical frequency standard to more than 20 laboratories in France, we present the progress made towards a metrological fibre wide-area network. We specifically address the key issue of multi-user dissemination and demonstrate in-line extraction on a main link, as first proposed by G. Grosche in 2010 [4].

Progress on the REFIMEVE+ project for optical frequency standard dissemination

Etienne Cantin, Nicolas Quintin, Fabrice Wiotte +6 more

High-resolution time and frequency transfer between remote laboratories are of major interest for many fundamentals applications, such as tests of general relativity or temporal variation of fundamental constants performed by comparing clocks signals. We report on the progress of a metrological fiber network on the French territory, with extensions to Europe, which aims to provide an ultra-stable frequency signal to around 20 laboratories. This network is based on the dissemination of an ultra-stable signal using optical links through the academic fiber internet network. As a first step, we have demonstrated robust links of up to 1480 km with stability at 104s and accuracy below 10−19.

First industrial-grade coherent fiber link for optical frequency standard dissemination

. No shift is observed within the statistical uncertainty. We show a continuous operation over five days with an uptime of 99.93%. This performance is comparable with the state-of-the-art coherent links established by National Metrology Institutes in Europe. It is a first step in the construction of an optical fiber network for metrology in France, which will give access to an ultrahigh performance frequency standard to a wide community of scientific users.
