Abstract

This paper proposes a two-stage iterative decoding scheme named matrix transform belief propagation scheme (MT-BP) based on conventional belief propagation (BP) algorithm for lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) codes.By introducing information measurement, location vectors and parity check matrix transform, the proposed method can establish additional parity check equations and take more information bits of variable nodes into consideration compared with conventional BP algorithm. The simulations are performed on random regular LDPC codes and algebraic quasi-cyclic codes (QC-LDPC), the experimental results show MT-BP method can efficiently reduce the bit error rate (BER).

An Iterative Decoding Scheme for CPM-QC-LDPC Codes Based on Matrix Transform

Zuohong Xu, Jiang Zhu, Cheng Qian +1 more

Quasi cyclic LDPC (QC-LDPC) codes consisting of circulant permutation matrices (CPM-QC-LDPC) are one of the most attractive types of LDPC codes due to their many advantages. In this paper, we mainly do some research on CPM-QC-LDPC codes. We first propose a two-stage decoding scheme mainly based on parity check matrix transform (MT), which can efficiently improve the bit error rate performance. To optimize the tradeoff between hardware implementation complexity and decoding performance, an improved method that combines our proposed MT scheme with the existing CPM-RID decoding scheme is presented. An experiment shows that both schemes can improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. Finally, we show that the MT decoding mechanism can be applied to other types of LDPC codes. We apply the MT scheme to random LDPC codes and show that it can efficiently lower the error floor.

Check-Belief Propagation Decoding of LDPC Codes

Wu Guan, Liping Liang

Variant belief propagation (BP) algorithms are applied to low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. However, conventional decoders suffer from a large resource consumption due to gathering messages from all the neighbour variable-nodes and/or check-nodes through cumulative calculations. In this paper, a check-belief propagation (CBP) decoding algorithm is proposed. Check-belief is used as the probability that the corresponding parity-check is satisfied. All check-beliefs are iteratively enlarged in a sequential recursive order, and successful decoding will be achieved after the check-beliefs are all big enough. Compared to previous algorithms employing a large number of cumulative calculations to gather all the neighbour messages, CBP decoding can renew each check-belief by propagating it from one check-node to another through only one variable-node, resulting in a low complexity decoding with no cumulative calculations. The simulation results and analyses show that the CBP algorithm provides little error-rate performance loss in contrast with the previous BP algorithms, but consumes much fewer calculations and memories than them. It earns a big benefit in terms of complexity.

Effective BP-ORBGRAND Scheme for Short LDPC Codes

Qing Yuan, Lingjun Kong, Tengda Yang +2 more

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have been widely used in practice due to their excellent error correction capabilities. However, the error correction performance of traditional decoding algorithms for LDPC codes is limited under short block lengths. To address this problem, this paper proposes an effective scheme that contains two stages for decoding short LDPC codes. In the first stage, the traditional belief propagation (BP) iterative algorithm is used to decode an LDPC code. The decoding process terminates if a codeword is obtained in this stage. Otherwise, the second stage decoding is invoked, in which the ordered reliability bits guessing random additive noise decoding (ORBGRAND) algorithm is applied. The accumulated log-likelihood ratios in the first stage are used to order the test error patterns in the ORBGRAND algorithm. Simulation results indicate that the proposed BP-ORBGRAND scheme can outperform the traditional BP iterative algorithm with relatively low additional complexity. Compared with the decoding scheme that concatenates the BP algorithm and the order statistics decoding (OSD) algorithm, the proposed decoding scheme has similar performance and the operations involved can be efficiently implemented in the hardware platform. All these indicate that the proposed scheme is desirable for practical purposes.

A high‐performance belief propagation decoding algorithm for codes with short cycles

Ali Karimi-lenji, Monireh Houshmand, Fahimeh Zarmehi

Summary The simplicity of decoding is one of the most important characteristics of the low density parity check (LDPC) codes. Belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm is a well‐known decoding algorithm for LDPC codes. Most LDPC codes with long lengths have short cycles in their Tanner graphs, which reduce the performance of the BP algorithm. In this paper, we present 2 methods to improve the BP decoding algorithm for LDPC codes. In these methods, the calculation of the variable nodes is controlled by using “multiplicative correction factor” and “additive correction factor.” These factors are obtained for 2 separate channels, namely additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and binary symmetric channel (BSC), as 2 functions of code and channel parameters. Moreover, we use the BP‐based method in the calculation of the check nodes, which reduces the required resources. Simulation results show the proposed algorithm has better performance and lower decoding error as compared to BP and similar methods like normalized‐BP and offset‐BP algorithms.

An Efficient Two-Stage Decoding Scheme for LDPC-CRC Concatenated Codes

Lingjun Kong, Haiyang Liu, Yuezhuang Shi +1 more

In modern communication systems, the concatenation of a low-density parity-check (LDPC) code with a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code is commonly used for error correction. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity two-stage scheme for decoding these codes using their concatenation structures. In the first stage, the traditional belief propagation (BP)-based iterative algorithm with a relative small maximum number of iterations is performed for decoding the LDPC code. If an LDPC codeword is obtained in this stage, the decoding process terminates. Otherwise, the second stage of the decoding process is performed, in which the guessing random additive noise decoding (GRAND) algorithm is applied to the CRC code. A list of information sequences satisfying the CRC check is obtained, each of which is then encoded to an LDPC codeword. The most likely codeword among them is the output of the decoding approach. The simulation results indicate that the proposed two-stage decoding approach can outperform the traditional BP-based iterative algorithm with a large maximum number of iterations. Moreover, the average complexity of the proposed approach is relatively low.

Iterative Soft-Decision Decoding of Binary Cyclic Codes Based on Extended Parity-Check Transformation Algorithm

Oluwaseyi Paul Babalola, D.J.J. Versfeld

In this paper, an iterative soft-decision (SD) decoding algorithm for cyclic codes based on extended parity-check equations is developed. The algorithm does not necessarily utilize the algebraic properties of the code, but operates on transforming the systematic parity-check matrix using the soft reliability information matrix obtained from the received vector. Results show a significant performance gain when compared with the hard decision Berlekamp-Massey(B-M) and belief propagation (BP) algorithms, but present a similar bit error rate (BER) performance when compared to the adaptive belief propagation (ABP) algorithm. An important feature of the decoder is that it functions within a practical decoding time complexity, and can be generally implemented for the class of linear block codes.
