LOOKING AT THE QUANTUM INTERNET

Abstract

The future of the Internet and of computer communication goes through modern physics. Using the new properties of quantum mechanics, various research laboratories around the world are building prototypes of “quantum networks”, a new way that uses some quantum physics principles to deliver information packets. In the near future our data will be able to travel on the Internet at very high speed, also greater than the speed of light, thanks to the quantum network. Independent research groups have already been able to demonstrate the entanglement of photons on fiber optic networks in China and Canada. The result can be considered as the first step for the realization of quantum telematic networks on a metropolitan scale and the connection at large distances of future computers based on quantum physics. But the quantum computer will be  such a   powerful system that can  even damage the security of our systems and networks as we know them today, as well as to personal privacy, already threatened  by current network rules.

Quantum Internet—Applications, Functionalities, Enabling Technologies, Challenges, and Research Directions

Amoldeep Singh, Kapal Dev, Harun Šiljak +2 more

The advanced notebooks, mobile phones, and internet applications in today’s world that we use are all entrenched in classical communication bits of zeros and ones. Classical internet has laid its foundation originating from the amalgamation of mathematics and Claude Shannon’s theory of information. However, today’s internet technology is a playground for eavesdroppers. This poses a serious challenge to various applications that rely on classical internet technology, and it has motivated the researchers to switch to new technologies that are fundamentally more secure. By exploring the quantum effects, researchers paved the way into quantum networks that provide security, privacy, and range of capabilities such as quantum computation, communication, and metrology. The realization of Quantum Internet (QI) requires quantum communication between various remote nodes through quantum channels guarded by quantum cryptographic protocols. Such networks rely upon quantum bits (qubits) that can simultaneously take the value of zeros and ones. Due to the extraordinary properties of qubits such as superposition, entanglement, and teleportation, it gives an edge to quantum networks over traditional networks in many ways. At the same time, transmitting qubits over long distances is a formidable task and extensive research is going on satellite-based quantum communication, which will deliver breakthroughs for physically realizing QI in near future. In this paper, QI functionalities, technologies, applications and open challenges have been extensively surveyed to help readers gain a basic understanding of the infrastructure required for the development of the global QI.

The Road To Quantum Internet : Advances in Optical Switching and Networking

Sharad Maskar, Shruti Pokale, Tanvi Shevale, Radhika Kshatriya, Vedika Suryawanshi

In today’s digital era, the need for communication systems that are both faster and more secure continues to grow, pushing innovation toward the development of the Quantum Internet. This paper investigates how advancements in optical switching and networking technologies are shaping this evolution by combining classical optical communication with the principles of quantum mechanics. It begins by reviewing how optical fiber systems have advanced to support high speed, low loss data transmission, forming the backbone for quantum communication infrastructure. The study explains the working principles of qubits, entanglement, and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which allow the transfer of data with unparalleled security through photon based signaling. Furthermore, it explores modern optical switching methods such as all optical, electro optic, and MEMS based switches, emphasizing their role in managing quantum signals efficiently while reducing energy consumption and transmission latency. The paper also highlights key network components like quantum routers, repeaters, and photonic integrated circuits that enable seamless interaction between classical and quantum networks. In addition, it reviews emerging technologies such as AI-assisted routing, low noise photon detectors, and nanophotonic materials that enhance the scalability and performance of quantum systems. The research identifies persistent challenges, including photon loss, decoherence, fabrication cost, and standardization issues, while outlining strategies to overcome them through advanced design and material innovation. Overall, this work provides a comprehensive understanding of how optical switching advancements are paving the way for a reliable, large scale, and globally connected Quantum Internet capable of transforming future communication and information security.

Madrid Quantum Network

Marta Irene García Cid, Laura Ortiz Martín, Vicente Martín Ayuso

The rapid technological advances in the field of quantum communications and the arrival of quantum computers, with a sufficient number of qubits to break the most used encryption algorithms used to date will change the Internet paradigm, as we know it today. Research centers, universities, industries and governments are working hard on the development of more scalable and efficient quantum communications networks, as well as the standardization of protocols, processes and interfaces needed for its industrialization. Many are the definitions of what will be the quantum Internet of the future (its architecture and components), but we offer a more relaxed definition of this concept, so that it is already possible to have a primitive QI with the technology available today, but without all the functionalities and components that will have in the future. As an example, the Madrid Quantum Network meets the requirements of this basic QI, proving to be a first step towards more complex architectures and functionalities. In addition, this concept has direct application as an intranet in restricted military environments, where high levels of security are required and whose extension is limited to metropolitan areas.

Quantum Internet

Ahmed Banafa

Building a quantum internet is a key ambition for many countries around the world as such a breakthrough will give them competitive advantage in a promising disruptive technology, and opens a new world of innovations and unlimited possibilities. Recently the US Department of Energy published the first blueprint of its kind, laying out a step-by-step strategy to make the quantum internet dream come true. A quantum internet would be able to transmit large volumes of data across immense distances at a rate that exceeds the speed of light. Academics, researchers, and IT professionals will need to create devices for the infrastructure of quantum internet including: quantum routers, repeaters, gateways, hubs, and other quantum tools. A whole new industry will be born based on the idea of a quantum internet existing in parallel with the current ecosystem of companies the authors have in a regular internet.
