Abstract

As quantum computers advance rapidly, traditional encryption methods are becoming vulnerable, making it essential to explore fundamentally new communication technologies such as the quantum internet. The quantum internet is a revolutionary technology that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to transmit data securely and quickly. Unlike classical networks, quantum networks use quantum entanglement and quantum key sharing (QKD), thus providing a higher level of security against future cyber threats. This article presents the technological foundations of the quantum internet, the architecture of quantum networks, and the infrastructure challenges, including quantum repeaters and network scaling. We also discuss industrial applications of the quantum internet, with a focus on the financial, government, and healthcare sectors. The quantum internet is still under development, but it is expected to become a new standard for communication in the coming decades. The study highlights the technological readiness and practical potential of the quantum internet, pointing to a secure and scalable future in communication networks.

Quantum Internet for a global network – principles, applications and challenges

Keshab Chandra Nath, Keshab Nath

The Quantum Internet represents a paradigm shift in communication technology, leveraging quantum mechanical principles such as superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem to enable ultra-secure, high-fidelity, and potentially revolutionary global connectivity. Unlike the classical internet, which transmits bits through electromagnetic signals, the Quantum Internet transmits qubits, allowing the creation of unbreakable cryptographic channels, distributed quantum computation, and quantum-enhanced sensing networks. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the Quantum Internet, covering its underlying principles, layered architecture, enabling hardware technologies, and core communication protocols. We analyze current and emerging applications, from secure government and financial communications to healthcare and fundamental physics experiments. The study highlights the unique advantages of quantum networking, such as intrinsic security against eavesdropping, global-scale entanglement distribution, and integration with distributed computing infrastructures. At the same time, it addresses practical limitations, including distance constraints, quantum memory coherence times, infrastructure costs, and security risks associated with hardware vulnerabilities. Special attention is given to the feasibility of large-scale deployment in India, leveraging national programs such as NM-QTA and QuEST, as well as satellite-based quantum communication initiatives by ISRO. The paper concludes with a roadmap for the realization of a global quantum network, identifying technical, infrastructural, and policy challenges that must be addressed in the coming decades.

Quantum Networking: Current Advances and Future Directions in Secure Communication

Nikitha Nikitha Nikitha, A. Maria Franclin Monisha, Pradeep Nayak +2 more

Abstract - Quantum networking represents one of the most transformative developments in modern secure communication. Unlike classical networks that rely on mathematical encryption, quantum networks exploit the physical properties of qubits—superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem—to establish communication channels that are inherently tamper-evident. As quantum technologies mature, applications such as quantum key distribution (QKD), quantum repeaters, quantum teleportation, quantum memory systems, and quantum internet protocols are gaining global traction. This paper consolidates current progress in quantum networking technologies and provides an extended discussion of recent advancements in protocols, hardware components, integrated photonic systems, and machine-learning-enhanced architectures. Additionally, results synthesized from established literature, illustrate performance trends, security gains, and practical deployment challenges in quantum communication networks. The paper also outlines future directions toward scalable quantum internets, hybrid quantum-classical infrastructures, error-corrected qubit networks, satellite-based QKD, and intelligent routing systems. Overall, quantum networking is positioned to redefine the future of secure data transfer, distributed computing, and global communication infrastructures. Exploring the significance of quantum cryptography in future network security protocols

Philip Chidozie Nwaga, Stephen Nwagwughiagwu

In an era of unprecedented technological advancement, the rise of quantum computing poses both opportunities and challenges to network security. While quantum computers promise to revolutionize data processing and problem-solving, they also render traditional cryptographic protocols vulnerable, threatening the integrity of current network security systems. Quantum cryptography, particularly quantum key distribution (QKD), emerges as a groundbreaking solution, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to ensure unparalleled data security. Unlike classical methods, QKD guarantees secure communication by detecting eavesdropping attempts, as any observation of quantum states disrupts their integrity. This paper explores the pivotal role of quantum cryptography in shaping future network security protocols amidst a landscape of increasing cyber threats. It provides a comprehensive analysis of QKD systems, their integration into existing infrastructure, and their resilience against potential quantum-based attacks. The discussion includes real-world implementations, such as satellite-based QKD networks and fiber-optic quantum communication systems, illustrating their practical viability and scalability. Furthermore, the paper addresses current challenges, including cost, technical complexity, and interoperability with classical networks, offering insights into ongoing research aimed at overcoming these hurdles. As global reliance on digital infrastructure grows, the transition to quantum-resilient security frameworks becomes imperative. Policymakers, industry leaders, and technology developers must collaborate to advance quantum cryptographic technologies and ensure their accessibility. By securing communication channels against both classical and quantum threats, quantum cryptography is positioned to redefine the foundations of network security, paving the way for a more secure and interconnected digital future.
