Abstract

Quantum key distribution with polarized qubits has not yet been realized over the aerial fiber, due to rapid polarization changes. Here, we report our recent work towards quantum communication through an aerial fiber channel. We designed a fast polarization feedback module featuring high efficiency, fast speed, and good stability. With this module, we implemented long-distance quantum key distribution over different types of aerial fiber links based on polarization encoding. Our work takes a significant step towards the application of quantum communications in complex environments.

Field test of quantum key distribution over aerial fiber based on simple and stable modulation

yan-lin tang, Zhi-Lin Xie, Chun Zhou +17 more

We have developed a simple time-bin phase encoding quantum key distribution system, using the optical injection locking technique. This setup incorporates both the merits of simplicity and stability in encoding, and immunity to channel disturbance. We have demonstrated the field implementation of quantum key distribution over long-distance deployed aerial fiber automatically. During the 70-day field test, we achieved approximately a 1.0 kbps secure key rate with stable performance. Our work takes an important step toward widespread implementation of QKD systems in diverse and complex real-life scenarios.

Active polarization stabilization in optical fibers suitable for quantum key distribution

Jie Chen, Guang Wu, Yao Li +2 more

Polarization feedback control of single-photon pulses has been achieved in long-distance fibers for more than 10 hours, which facilitated "one-way" polarization-encoded quantum key distribution with long-term stabilities. Experimental test of polarization encoding in 75 km fibers demonstrated that the single-photon polarization transformation in long-distance fibers could be controlled to provide a typical QBER of (3.9+/-1.5)% within a long-term operation of 620 minutes.

Stable polarization-encoded quantum key distribution in fiber

Guang Wu, Jie Chen, Yao Li +1 more

Polarizations of single-photon pulses have been controlled with long-term stability of more than 10 hours by using an active feedback technique for auto-compensation of unpredictable polarization scrambling in long-distance fiber. Experimental tests of long-term operations in 50, 75 and 100 km fibers demonstrated that such a single-photon polarization control supported stable polarization encoding in long-distance fibers to facilitate stable one-way fiber system for polarization-encoded quantum key distribution, providing quantum bit error rates below the absolute security threshold.

Stable quantum key distribution with polarization control

Jie Chen, Yao Li, Wu Guang +2 more

In this paper, we promote a principle of polarization feedback which keeps polarization states stable in long-distance fiber. It is quite difficult to realize long-term stable quantum key distribution (QKD) with polarization encoding due to the effect of irregular polarization fluctuation in single mode fiber. We have designed a polarization feedback control system to compensate for the birefringence. And a polarization encoded QKD experiment has been realized in 100km fiber.

Multi-Channel Time-Bin Quantum Key Distribution over a 70-km-Long Deployed Fiber Link

Quantum key distribution (QKD), in which security is ensured by physical quantum laws, is shown as the most secure communication between two distant users [1]–[3]. Recent efforts in global research focus on providing the infrastructure that can support QKD and extending applications to large scale of users and distances. Three types of links are explored up to date: terrestrial free-space links (limited by visible distance), fiber-based links (repeater-free range limited to a few 100 km [1]) and finally satellite links, which allow to bridge intercontinental distances. For each of these scenarios, different types of hardware are involved and state encoding (polarization-, time- [1]–[2], spatial- and frequency-based [3]) is tailored to mitigate link impairments. Additionally, the effort towards higher QKD rates is given [1]–[3] that future global quantum communication networks support a wider range of use cases.

Long-Distance Quantum Key Distribution over Telecom Fiber

Leilei Huang

We present two long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD) systems over telecom fiber. The first one is the Sagnac QKD system implementing standard BB84 protocol. Novel polarization-insensitive phase modulators are used to simplify the conventional architecture. We are able to achieve a stable quantum bit error rate of 4-6.5% over 40km fiber loop over one hour without recalibration. The second one is the fiber-based QKD system using Gaussian-modulated coherent states. We have overcome the challenges imposed by the requirements for high detector sensitivity, long-term stability, and low signal crosstalk. Our GMCS QKD system is the first practical fiber-based one-way demonstration and is able to achieve a sifted secret key rate of 15.5 kbits/s over a transmission distance of 5km fiber. Experimental QKD is still in its infancy. The results presented in this thesis represent a significant step forward towards the practical QKD over conventional fiber networks.
