Abstract

Abstract We perform a detailed theoretical analysis of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance width and amplitude as a function of laser power for different rates of spontaneous coherence transfer from the excited to the ground states. Our results show that the EIA signal undergoes a power broadening much smaller than EIT and is even free from power broadening in a specific condition that we analyse. Furthermore, the amplitude of the EIA signal is always larger than the amplitude of EIT, which constitutes an advantage in applications like magnetometers and light storage processes.

Resonances of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in a light field of elliptically polarised waves

Д. В. Коваленко, M. Yu. Basalaev, Valeriy I. Yudin +1 more

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances excited by a strong two-frequency field are considered for various values of the total angular momenta of the ground (F g) and excited (F e) states at a degenerated optical closed transition F g → F e. The light field is formed by two co-propagating waves with arbitrary elliptical polarisations. The process of spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited state to the ground state is shown to determine the formation of the EIA resonance at the transition F g = F → F e = F + 1. The results obtained generalise the classification of transitions into ‘bright’ (F g = F → F e = F + 1) and ‘dark’ (F g = F → F e = F and F g = F → F e = F – 1) transitions with respect to the direction of a subnatural resonance.

Coherent processes in electromagnetically induced absorption: a steady and transient study

Jelena Dimitrijević, D. Arsenović, B. M. Jelenkovic

A perturbation method was used to solve optical Bloch equations (OBEs) for the transition F g =1→ F e =2, in order to describe the role of ground-level Zeeman coherences in the formation of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). A narrow Lorentzian peak, centered at zero value of the scanning magnetic field, appears in the analytical expression of the second-order correction of a density-matrix element for ground-level Zeeman coherences, (ρ g −1 , g +1 ) x 2 . Through analytical expressions for lower-order corrections of density-matrix elements, we were able to establish clear relations between the narrow Lorentzian in (ρ g − 1 , g +1 ) x 2 and higher-order corrections of optical coherences, i.e. EIA. We see from analytical expressions that these two resonances have opposite signs and that EIA becomes electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the limit of low efficiency of spontaneous transfer of coherences from excited-level to ground-level Zeeman sublevels. The transient behavior of EIA follows the time evolution of (ρ g − 1 , g +1 ) x 2 . After the coupling laser is turned on, both the Lorentzian peak in (ρ g − 1 , g +1 ) x 2 and EIA reach steady state via over-damped oscillations.

Analogue of electromagnetically induced absorption in the microwave domain using stimulated Brillouin scattering

Siva Shakthi A., A. B. Yelikar, Ravi Pant

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency/absorption (EIT/EIA) tailor the amplitude and phase response of an absorption resonance to create large dispersion, which has been exploited for applications in slow- and fast-light, and quantum information science. Since EIA enhances (induces) absorption of an already existing absorption (transmission) profile, it leads to a significant reduction in output signal power. Induction of a narrow absorption feature within a gain resonance can compensate for the signal loss while creating large dispersion at the EIA feature frequency. However, the demonstration of an analogue of EIA exploiting gain resonances has remained elusive. Here, we exploit coherent interaction between the Brillouin gain resonances in orthogonal polarization states to demonstrate controlled excitation of an analogue of EIA over microwave frequency range of 2.5–43 GHz. We induce a narrow absorption feature (~6 MHz), with controllable depth and frequency, within Brillouin gain resonance, demonstrating a novel technique for microwave photonic processing.

EIT/EIA Resonances Driven by the Light Field of Elliptically Polarized Waves

Д. В. Коваленко, M. Yu. Basalaev, Valeriy I. Yudin +1 more

Outside of the perturbation theory for bichromatic field of two co-propagating elliptically polarized waves, the type of the subnatural (electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) or absorption (EIA)) resonance is theoretically found to determined only by the angular momenta of the ground (Fg) and the excited (Fe) states of atomic gas. Herewith, the spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited state to the ground one leads to the formation of the EIA resonance at the transition Fg= F → Fe= F + 1.

Enhancement of electromagnetically induced absorption with elliptically polarized light - laser intensity dependent coherence effect

Jelena Dimitrijević, Z. D. Grujić, Marina M. Mijailović +3 more

Using the (2)S(1/2)F(g) = 2 --> (2)P(3/2)F(e) = 3 transition in (87)Rb vapor at room temperature, we study effect of the laser light polarization on the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA). This work extends the recent study of the behavior of the EIA as a function of the laser ellipticity (Brazhnikov et. al., JETP Lett. 83, 64, 2006). We have shown that such behavior strongly depends on the laser power. For the low laser power EIA amplitude has maximum for linearly polarized light, while for high laser power elliptically polarized light of ellipticity 15-20 degrees generates maximum of the EIA amplitude. EIA width varies slowly with the laser ellipticity at lower laser power, and much stronger at higher laser power. Through our theoretical model we attributed observed results to combined effect of the laser ellipticity and power on the population of ground state Zeeman sublevels.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in magneto-optical resonances in an elliptically polarized field

Denis V. Brazhnikov, Anatolii M Tumaikin, Valeriy I. Yudin +1 more

Using a 1 --> 2 transition as an analytically tractable model, we discuss in detail magneto-optical resonances of both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) types in the Hanle configuration. The analysis is made for an arbitrary rate of depolarizing collisions in the excited state and an arbitrary elliptical field polarization. The obtained results clearly show that the main reason for the EIA subnatural resonance is the spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited level to the ground level. In the EIA case we predict the negative structures in the absorption resonance at large field detuning. The role of the finite atom-light interaction time is briefly discussed. In addition we study nontrivial peculiarities of the resonance line shape related to the velocity spread in a gas.
