Abstract

We report a novel guided-wave resonator that supports multiple bands of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The platform for the spatial and spectral interference is obtained by a microstrip transmission line loaded with proximity-coupled open-circuited stubs. We show experimentally that with two microstrip open stubs, a complete destructive interference takes place leading to a single EIT band with near-unity transmission efficiency. More interestingly, the addition of a third stub results in a supplementary EIT band with a Q-factor of 147 and an effective group refractive index of 530. With the open-stub configuration, the EIT phase response can be dynamically controlled by varying the capacitance between the adjacent stubs without breaking the transmission path of the underlying electromagnetic waves. Therefore, the proposed structure is well suited for buffering and tunable phase modulation applications. Since the proposed structures are compact and fully planar, we anticipate seamless integration with low-profile high frequency electronics.

A Lumped Element Analog of Dual-Stub Microwave Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Resonator

Abdul Jabbar, Omar Farooq Siddiqui, Farooq Ahmad Tahir +2 more

This paper presents lumped element manifestation of the quantum phenomenon known as Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT). The EIT effect is reproduced at microwave frequencies by exploiting the interference effects of two series-RLC resonators that load a microstrip line in shunt configuration. The compact EIT-based devices can be employed in various microwave applications such as tunable filtering, phase shifting and material sensing. The proposed design provides the quality factor of 22, insertion loss of less than 1.5dB and 3dB bandwidth of 43 MHz.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in an All-Dielectric Metamaterial-Waveguide With Large Group Index

Chuanshuai Sui, Bingxin Han, Tingting Lang +3 more

We investigate numerically an analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an all-dielectric metamaterial-waveguide (ADMW) that consists of a two-dimensional silicon rod array on quartz slab waveguide. The EIT-like response is achieved by the destructive interference between a broad magnetic resonance and a narrow guide mode resonance. By tailoring the guided mode through the thickness of the slab waveguide or the lattice period of the metamaterial, an EIT-like transmission window is achieved with both high Q-factor (>104) and high transmission (>94%). And the group refractive index at the EIT-like resonance of the ADMW can be up to several thousands. These results demonstrate that the proposed ADMW has potential applications in low-loss slow-light based devices, bio-chemical sensing, and optical modulations.

Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency in metamaterials

Philippe Tassin, Lei Zhang, Thomas Koschny +2 more

This study demonstrates a metamaterial with two coupled split-ring resonators (SRR) can exhibit an effect reminiscent of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), a coherent process normally observed in three-level atomic media. The coupling between two SRR induces a frequency splitting in the spectral response of the metamaterial, opening up a narrow transmission band in the centre of the absorption line. The obtained reduction in group velocity together with the low absorption is useful for a variety of slow-light applications, without the need for the extreme cooling or the large magnetic fields that are typically required for EIT in atomic systems.

Manipulation of electromagnetically-induced transparency in planar metamaterials based on phase coupling

Xing-Ri Jin, Yuehui Lu, Jinwoo Park +7 more

We experimentally demonstrated a controllable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like spectral response at microwave frequencies in a planar metamaterial consisting of two identical split-ring resonators (SRRs) with side-by-side symmetry. In our scheme, phase coupling between the two SRRs (serving as the bright mode), which were excited strongly by the incident wave, was employed, and it was found that the EIT-like spectral response could be controlled by simply adjusting the incident angle. Thus, our scheme may be used for electromagnetic-wave switching. A high group index for slow-light application and a high quality factor could be obtained by simply controlling the incident angle.

EIT-like response in asymmetrically coupled split ring resonators

In this paper we demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency achieved in metamaterials in which electromagnetic waves propagate along transmission line interacting with broadside coupled split-ring resonators. We introduce for the first time the EIT metamaterial excited with guided waves that exhibit a very low insertion loss followed with a large group index of refraction greater than 200 and large enhancement in group delay, enabling a significant slowdown of waves. We also demonstrate a precise control of the EIT response by moving the gaps in split-ring resonators.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in an all-dielectric nano-metamaterial for slow light application

Qiao Wang, Li Yu, Huixuan Gao +2 more

Slow light technique has significant potential applications in many contemporary photonic device developments for integrated all-optical circuit, such as buffers, regenerators, switches and interferometers. In this paper, we present an efficient coupling mechanism of an electromagnetically induced transparency like (EIT-like) effect in an all-dielectric nano-metamaterial. This EIT-like effect is generated by destructive interference between a radiative Fabry-Perot (FP) mode and a dark waveguide (WG) mode, which is based on a combined structure of a dielectric grating and multilayer films. The dark WG mode is excited by guided mode of dielectric grating instead of radiative FP mode. In analogy to the molecular transition process, the FP mode, guided mode and WG mode are denoted by excited states of |1〉, |2〉 and |3〉. The two coupling pathways of the EIT-like effect in our metamaterial are |0〉 → |1〉 and |0〉 → |2〉 → |3〉 → |1〉, where |0〉 is the ground state. The simulated resonant wavelength of WG mode is consistent with theoretical result. We further confirm this EIT-like effect through a two-oscillator coupling analysis. We achieve a group refractive index of 913.6 by adjusting these two modes coupling of the EIT-like effect, which is useful for developing slow light device. This work provides a valuable solution to realize electromagnetically induced transparency in all-dielectric nanomaterial.
