Abstract

We analyze the secrecy outage performance of a mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) transmission system with imperfect channel state information (CSI). We deal with a single-input multiple-output wiretap model, where a base station (works as the relay) forwards the signal transmitted from a user (source) to a data center (works as the destination), while an eavesdropper wiretaps the confidential information by decoding the received signal. Both the relay and the eavesdropper are armed with multiple antennas, and maximal ratio combining scheme is utilized to improve the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The effects of imperfect CSI of the RF link and the FSO link, misalignment, detection schemes, and relaying schemes on the secrecy outage performance of mixed RF-FSO systems are studied. First, the cumulative distribution function and probability density function of FSO links with pointing error and two different detection technologies are derived. Then, we derive the closed-form expressions for the lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) with fixed-gain relaying and variable-gain relaying schemes. Furthermore, asymptotic results for the SOP are investigated by exploiting the unfolding of Meijer's G-function when the electrical SNR of FSO link approaches infinity. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to corroborate the correctness of the analysis.

On Secure Mixed RF-FSO Systems With TAS and Imperfect CSI

Hongjiang Lei, Haolun Luo, Ki‐Hong Park +4 more

In this work, we analyze the secrecy outage performance of a dual-hop relay system composed of multiple-input-multiple-output radio-frequency (RF) links and a free-space optical (FSO) link while a multiple-antenna eavesdropper wiretaps the confidential information by decoding the received signals from the resource node. The channel state information (CSI) of the RF and FSO links is considered to be outdated. We propose three transmit antenna selection (TAS) schemes to enhance the secrecy performance of the considered systems. The secrecy outage performance with different TAS schemes is analyzed and the effects of misalignment and detection technology on the secrecy outage performance of mixed systems are studied. We derive the closed-form expressions for probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) over Málaga channel with imperfect CSI. Then the closed-form expressions for the CDF and PDF of the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the legitimate receiver over Nakagami-$m$ and Málaga channels are derived. Furthermore, the lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) with different TAS schemes are derived. Besides, the asymptotic results for SOP are investigated by exploiting the unfolding of Meijer's $G$-function when the electrical SNR of FSO link approaches infinity. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulation results are presented to testify the correctness of the proposed analysis. The results illustrate that the outdated CSI shows a strong effect on the secrecy outage performance. In addition, increasing the number of antennas at the source cannot significantly enhance the secrecy performance of the considered systems.

An analysis of secrecy outage performance of DF and RF \\relaying SIMO system with imperfect CSI

Danyang Wang, Gaofeng Pan, Hui ZHAO

This paper presents an investigation of the physical layer secrecy outage performance of the cooperative system in the typical four-node (source, relay, destination, and eavesdropper) scenario with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we consider the single-input multiple-output wiretap channels, where the source (S) and the relay (R) are equipped with a single antenna, and the destination (D) and the eavesdropper (E) are equipped with multiple antennas. D and E adopt maximal ratio combining to process multiple copies of signals, and the relay adopts decode-and-forward (DF) and randomize-and-forward (RF) schemes to forward the received signal to the destination. E overhears the information transmitted over both the S-R and R-D links. We derive the closed-form and asymptotic expressions for the secrecy outage probability under both the DF and RF schemes with imperfect CSI, respectively, the accuracy of which is verified by simulation results.

On Secrecy Performance of Mixed RF-FSO Systems

Hongjiang Lei, Zhijun Dai, Imran Shafique Ansari +3 more

In this paper, we study the secrecy performance of a mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) transmission systems. All RF links experience Nakagami-m fading and the FSO link experiences the Gamma-Gamma fading. The effect of pointing error and two types of detection techniques (i.e., heterodyne detection and intensity modulation with direct detection) are considered. We derive closed-form expressions for lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and exact average secrecy capacity (ASC). Furthermore, by utilizing the expansion of Meijer's G-function, asymptotic results for SOP and ASC are derived when the electrical signal-to-noise ratio of the FSO link tends to infinity. Numerical and Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to verify the accuracy of our proposed results.

Secrecy performance of mixed single-input multiple-output-FSO/single-input multiple-output-RF networks with energy harvesting

Wanxin He, Jiliang Zhang

In this paper, we study the secrecy performance of an energy-harvested relaying assisted free space optical-radio frequency (FSO-RF) network. In particular, a single-beam source sends an optical signal to a multi-aperture relay over an FSO channel, and then the relay converts it into an RF signal and adopts a decode-and-forward protocol to forward it to a multi-antenna destination under the wiretapping of a multi-antenna eavesdropper. We assume that the relay is power constrained, and it requires to harvest energy from a power beacon to assist the information transmission. It is also assumed that the FSO link and all RF links are subject to gamma-gamma fading with atmospheric turbulence and Rayleigh fading, respectively. Analytical expressions for secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity are derived. In addition, the asymptotic expression for SOP is obtained to present insight into secrecy performance at high signal-to-noise ratio regimes. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations verify the correctness of the theoretical derivations.

Secrecy Performance Analysis of Mixed α − μ and Exponentiated Weibull RF-FSO Cooperative Relaying System

Nazmul Hassan Juel, A. S. M. Badrudduza, S. M. Riazul Islam +5 more

Increasing concerns regarding wireless systems' security are leading researchers to exploit the physical properties of a medium while designing any secured wireless network. The secrecy performance of a mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) system with a variable gain relaying scheme is investigated in this paper under the attempt of wiretapping by an eavesdropper. We assume that the eavesdropper can intrude the target data from the RF link only. Both the RF links (main and eavesdropper) undergo the α-μ fading statistics and the FSO link experiences the exponentiated Weibull fading statistics. Exploiting the amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying scheme while considering two detection techniques (i.e. heterodyne detection and intensity modulation/direct detection) with pointing error impairments, the mathematical formulations of the unified probability density function and cumulative distribution function are performed for the equivalent signal-to-noise ratio of the considered dual-hop RF-FSO link. Closed-form analytical expressions for average secrecy capacity, secrecy outage probability, and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity are derived in terms of Meijer's G and Fox's H functions to quantify the system performance. Capitalizing on these expressions, the secrecy performance is further analyzed for various channel parameters of RF links, aperture sizes of the receiver, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence severity. The results reveal that aperture averaging can improve the secrecy performance remarkably by suppressing the effects of turbulence. Monte Carlo simulations are provided to justify the accuracy of the proposed model.

On Secrecy Performance of Mixed Generalized Gamma and Málaga RF-FSO Variable Gain Relaying Channel

Sheikh Habibul Islam, A. S. M. Badrudduza, S. M. Riazul Islam +7 more

The emergence of an array of new wireless networks has led researchers to evaluate the prospect of utilizing the physical properties of the wireless medium in order to design secure systems. In this paper, the physical layer secrecy performance of a mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) system with variable gain relaying scheme is investigated in the presence of an eavesdropper. We assume that the eavesdropper can wiretap the transmitted confidential data from the RF link only. It is further assumed that the main and eavesdropper RF links are modeled as generalized Gamma (GG) fading channel, and the free space optical (FSO) link experiences Málaga turbulence with pointing error impairment. Our primary concern is to protect this confidential information from being wiretapped. Besides pointing error, the atmospheric turbulence and two types of detection techniques (i.e. heterodyne detection and intensity modulation with direct detection) are also taken into consideration. Utilizing amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme, the novel mathematical closed-form expressions for average secrecy capacity, lower bound of secrecy outage probability, and strictly positive secrecy capacity are derived. As both the links (RF and FSO) undergo generalized fading channels, the derived expressions are also general. We present a unification of some existing works utilizing the proposed model to better clarify the novelty of this work. Finally, all the derived expressions are justified via Monte-Carlo simulations.
