Abstract

In this paper, we study the secrecy performance of a mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) transmission systems. All RF links experience Nakagami-m fading and the FSO link experiences the Gamma-Gamma fading. The effect of pointing error and two types of detection techniques (i.e., heterodyne detection and intensity modulation with direct detection) are considered. We derive closed-form expressions for lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and exact average secrecy capacity (ASC). Furthermore, by utilizing the expansion of Meijer's G-function, asymptotic results for SOP and ASC are derived when the electrical signal-to-noise ratio of the FSO link tends to infinity. Numerical and Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to verify the accuracy of our proposed results.

Secrecy Performance of FSO Using HD and IM/DD Detection Technique Over F-Distribution Turbulence Channel With Pointing Error

Liqiang Han, Yawei Wang, Xuemei Liu +1 more

This work is concerned with the secrecy performance of a free-space optical (FSO) communication system over Fisher-Snedecor$\mathcal {F}$-distribution turbulence fading channel. Considering the influence of pointing error, atmospheric turbulence and different detection technique (i.e., the intensity modulation with direct detection and heterodyne detection), we derive the exact closed-form expressions for the average secrecy capacity (ASC), the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the strictly positive secrecy capacity (SPSC) in terms of Meijer’s G-function. Furthermore, the asymptotic expression for SOP is analyzed as the electrical signal-to-noise ratio approaches infinity. Monte Carlo simulations are provided to validate analytical results.

On Secrecy Performance of Millimeter-Wave RF-Assisted FSO Communication Systems

Mohammad Javad Saber, Siavash Rajabi

In this article, we study the physical-layer security performance of the mixed millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radio frequency (RF) assisted free-space optical (FSO) system as a future candidate transmission technology. The Rician and the Gamma-Gamma fading are investigated for the mm-wave RF and the FSO channels, respectively. More precisely, to analyze the secrecy performance of our considered system, we derive exact closed-form expressions for the average secrecy capacity and lower bound of the secrecy outage probability. Our considered system model involves the fixed-gain and the variable-gain relaying protocols, mm-wave characteristics and pointing errors in the RF and the FSO links and finally the heterodyne detection and the intensity modulation with direct detection techniques. Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to verify our analytical results and also to investigate the effects of mentioned parameters and techniques in the security performance of the proposed mixed system.

On Secrecy Analysis of DF Based Dual Hop Mixed RF-FSO Systems

Xiaojun Pan, Honglin Ran, Gaofeng Pan +2 more

In this paper, the secrecy performance of a mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) communication system that consists of a source (S), a relay (R), a destination (D), and an eavesdropper (E), is studied. In this system, it is assumed that the E can overhear the free space optical (FSO) link between R and D as it is close to D. It is further assumed that the radio frequency (RF) and FSO links experience Rayleigh and Gamma-Gamma fading, respectively. Considering atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, two types of detection techniques, and decode-and-forward scheme, the closed-form expressions for the lower bound of secrecy outage probability and the probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity are derived. Monte Carlo simulation results are also presented to validate the accuracy of the derivations.

Secrecy Outage Analysis of Mixed RF-FSO Systems With Channel Imperfection

Hongjiang Lei, Haolun Luo, Ki‐Hong Park +3 more

We analyze the secrecy outage performance of a mixed radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) transmission system with imperfect channel state information (CSI). We deal with a single-input multiple-output wiretap model, where a base station (works as the relay) forwards the signal transmitted from a user (source) to a data center (works as the destination), while an eavesdropper wiretaps the confidential information by decoding the received signal. Both the relay and the eavesdropper are armed with multiple antennas, and maximal ratio combining scheme is utilized to improve the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The effects of imperfect CSI of the RF link and the FSO link, misalignment, detection schemes, and relaying schemes on the secrecy outage performance of mixed RF-FSO systems are studied. First, the cumulative distribution function and probability density function of FSO links with pointing error and two different detection technologies are derived. Then, we derive the closed-form expressions for the lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) with fixed-gain relaying and variable-gain relaying schemes. Furthermore, asymptotic results for the SOP are investigated by exploiting the unfolding of Meijer's G-function when the electrical SNR of FSO link approaches infinity. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to corroborate the correctness of the analysis.

Secrecy Performance Analysis of Mixed Hyper-Gamma and Gamma-Gamma Cooperative Relaying System

Noor Ahmad Sarker, A. S. M. Badrudduza, S. M. Riazul Islam +6 more

In this paper, we investigate a secure dual-hop radio frequency-free space optical (RF-FSO) mixed variable gain relaying framework in the presence of a single eavesdropper. The RF and FSO links are modeled with hyper Gamma (HG) and Gamma-Gamma (ΓΓ) fading channels, respectively. We assume that the eavesdropper utilizes another HG fading channel to wiretap the transmitted confidential data from the RF link. Our key concern is to defend this information against passive eavesdropping. We carry out the secrecy measurements by deriving closed-form mathematical expressions of average secrecy capacity (ASC), secure outage probability (SOP), and strictly positive secrecy capacity (SPSC), all in terms of Meijer's G function. Capitalizing on the derived expressions, we analyze the impacts of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors on the secrecy capacity and outage performance of the proposed scenario. For gaining more insights, we also analyze the asymptotic outage behaviour for high signal-to-noise ratio. Two detection techniques i.e. heterodyne (HD) and the intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD) are taken into consideration and our results demonstrate that HD technique notably outperforms the IM/DD scheme. The supremacy and novelty of the model is demonstrated via utilizing generic properties of the HG fading channel. Finally, we provide a justification of the derived expressions via Monte-Carlo simulations.

More precisely, by considering the heterodyne detection, the intensity modulation with direct detection techniques and the pointing errors, we derive an exact closed-form expression for the ASC metric to analyze the secrecy performance of considered mixed RF/FSO variable gain relaying system.
