A Reconfigurable Silicon Generator of Four-Photon Entangled States

Caterina Vigliar, Jeremy C. Adcock, Raffaele Santagati +2 more

Large-scale quantum silicon photonic devices can represent a viable route to the generation of large entangled quantum states (graph states)[1], exploiting the generation of multiple pairs of photons on chip. Graph state applications are diverse, spanning from measurement-based quantum computing to quantum error correction and quantum communication [2]. Silicon photonics represents a promising platform for its stability, reconfigurability, high-density and high-performance optical components.

Silicon photonic processor of two-qubit entangling quantum logic

R Santagati, J W Silverstone, Michael John Strain +11 more

Entanglement is a fundamental property of quantum mechanics, and is a primary resource in quantum information systems. Its manipulation remains a central challenge in the development of quantum technology. In this work, we demonstrate a device which can generate, manipulate, and analyse two-qubit entangled states, using miniature and mass-manufacturable silicon photonics. By combining four photon-pair sources with a reconfigurable six-mode interferometer, embedding a switchable entangling gate, we generate two-qubit entangled states, manipulate their entanglement, and analyse them, all in the same silicon chip. Using quantum state tomography, we show how our source can produce a range of entangled and separable states, and how our switchable controlled-Z gate operates on them, entangling them or making them separable depending on its configuration.

Experimental manipulation of five-photon entanglement

We report the experimental manipulation of five-photon entanglement. In the experiment, we first generate a high intensity and ultra-stable source of entangled photons and then used two pairs of entangled photons to produce a four-photon entangled state. After combining it with a single-photon state, we are able to engineer a five-photon entangled state. Meanwhile, by manipulating these entangled states, we have also successfully demonstrated the open-destination quantum teleportation, and a distant nondestructive Controlled-NOT gate for quantum teleportation.
