Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we discuss the long wavelength optical reflection and bistable behavior of an InGaN/GaN quantum dot nanostructure coupled to a single-sided cavity. It is found that due to the presence of a strong coupling field, the reflection coefficient can be controlled at long wavelength, which is essential for adjusting the threshold of reflected optical bistability. Moreover, the phase shift features of the reflection pulse inside an electromagnetically induced transparency window are also discussed.

Phase control of optical bistability in an InGaN∕GaN quantum dot nanostructure

Hossein Jafarzadeh, Rajab Nasehi, Elnaz Ahmadi Sangachin +1 more

In this paper, we propose a model for controlling the optical bistability in four-level [Formula: see text] quantum dot nanostructure which is embedded in a unidirectional ring cavity. [Formula: see text] quantum dot nanostructure is based on our recent paper [S. H. Asadpour, Z. Golsanamlou and H. R. Soleimani, Physica E 54 (2013) 45]. It is found that intensity threshold of optical bistability can be manipulated by signal intensity of applied fields. Moreover, we find that phase variation of terahertz signal field can also affect the behaviors of optical bistability and hysteresis loop.

Optical bistability via dual electromagnetically induced transparency in a coupled quantum-well nanostructure

Zhiping Wang, Benli Yu

We investigate optical bistability (OB) behavior in an asymmetric three-coupled quantum well structure inside a unidirectional ring cavity. By controlling the assisting coherent driven field and the frequency detunings of the two control laser fields, we find that the appearance and disappearance of OB can easily be controlled by adjusting the positions of the dual electromagnetically induced transparency windows. Analysis in the dressed-state picture is also given. Our scheme may be used for building more efficient all-optical switches and logic-gate devices for optical computing and quantum information processing.

Optical bistability in reflection of the laser pulse in a 1D photonic crystal doped with four-level InGaN/GaN quantum dots

Jalil Shiri, Javad Khalilzadeh, Seyyed Hossein Asadpour

Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the optical properties of 1D photonic crystal (PC) with a defect layer doped by four-level InGaN/GaN quantum dots. Transient and steady-state behavior of the medium completely relies on the intensities and relative phases of coherent coupling fields. In addition, the transient absorption–dispersion spectra of 1DPC can be easily adjusted by choosing the controllable parameters properly. Furthermore, the transmitted and reflected light pulses at λ = 1.55 μ m (long wavelength) can be tuned by controlling the Rabi frequencies of applied light due to their potential applications in all-optical systems. Furthermore, the effect of relative phase between applied fields on the light propagation was evaluated through the medium. In addition, all-optical switching time was found for subluminal/superluminal and absorption/transmission of light propagation. The required switching time ranges between 2–7 ps. The proposed model may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics and solid-state quantum information science and systems due to large applications in signal processing.

Influence of Fano interference and incoherent processes on optical bistability in a four-level quantum dot nanostructure

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, Ghahraman Solookinejad, M. Panahi +1 more

Role of Fano interference and incoherent pumping field on optical bistability in a four-level designed InGaN/GaN quantum dot nanostructure embedded in a unidirectional ring cavity are analyzed. It is found that intensity threshold of optical bistability can be manipulated by Fano interference. It is shown that incoherent pumping fields make the threshold of optical bistability behave differently by Fano interference. Moreover, in the presence of Fano interference the medium becomes phase-dependent. Therefore, the relative phase of applied fields can affect the behaviors of optical bistability and intensity threshold can be controlled easily.

Optical bistability in a defect slab with a negative refractive quantum dot nanostructure

M. Jamshidnejad, E. Asadi Amirabadi, Sedigheh Miraboutalebi +1 more

We demonstrate optical bistability (OB) in a defect slab doped V-type four-level InGaN/GaN quantum dot nanostructure in the negative refraction frequency band. It has been shown that the OB behavior of such a quantum dot nanostructure system can be controlled by the amplitude of the driving fields and a new parameter for controlling the OB behavior as thickness of the slab medium in the negative refraction band. Meanwhile, we show that the negative refraction frequency band can be controlled by tuning electric permittivity and magnetic permeability by the amplitude of the driving fields and electron concentration in the defect slab doped. Under the numerical simulations, due to the effect of quantum coherence and interference, it is possible to switch bistability by adjusting the optimal conditions in the negative refraction frequency band, which is more practical in all-optical switching or coding elements, and technology based nanoscale devices.

Coherent control of optical bistability in Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency atomic system

You-Lin Chuang, Mehmet Emre Taşgın

We study optical bistable behavior of a Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) atomic medium in a unidirectional optical ring-cavity. Due to strong van del Waal (vdW) interactions between the atoms, both optical nonlinear dispersion and nonlinear absorption coefficients are enhanced substantially. Under the condition of two-photon on resonance, we show that probe one-photon detuning can change the phase of the third order nonlinearity coefficient, which tunes the character of the optical bistability within different ratios of dispersive and absorptive types. This enables the single-photon control over photonic devices for further manipulation of light other than switches and transistors. More interestingly, we predict appearance of a scaling phenomena for optical bistabilities with the factors of coupling Rabi frequency and atomic density. Additionally, we also discuss the influence of the cavity detuning and the mirror transmission coefficient on the optical bistable behavior. The strong bistable feature provides a good ingredient for realizing all-optical logic gate devices in optical computing.
