Abstract

The impact of quantum fluctuations on the properties of quantum well excitons excited inside 0D semiconductor microcavity possessing strong light confinement is analysed. The analysis takes into account the exciton-exciton repulsion and the presence of a reservoir. Analytical solutions are obtained for the generalized Glauber P-function of the system in the adiabatic limit. Destabilization of the homogeneous nonlinear solution belonging to the lower bistability branch in the presence of quantum noise is predicted.

Quantum fluctuations in a system of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity

Sevak Demirchyan, Timur A. Khudaiberganov, Igor Yu. Chestnov +1 more

This paper analyzes how quantum fluctuations affect the properties of exciton polaritons in a sample located in a planar semiconductor microcavity. The analysis takes into account the nonlinear interaction between the excitons, even in the presence of a thermal reservoir. Exact solutions are obtained for the generalized Glauber P function in the adiabatic limit. Giant exciton bunching is predicted. It is found that the presence of quantum noise destabilizes a homogeneous solution that belongs to the lower bistability branch.

Quantum optical effects in semiconductor microcavities

E. Giacobino, Jean‐Philippe Karr, Gaétan Messin +2 more

Investigations of quantum effects in semiconductor quantum-well microcavities interacting with laser light in the strong-coupling regime are presented. Modifications of quantum fluctuations of the outgoing light are expected due to the non-linearity originating from coherent exciton–exciton scattering. In the strong-coupling regime, this scattering translates into a four-wave mixing interaction between the mixed exciton–photon states, the polaritons. Squeezing and giant amplification of the polariton field and of the outgoing light field fluctuations are predicted. However, polariton–phonon scattering is shown to yield excess noise in the output field, which may destroy the non-classical effects. Experiments demonstrate evidence for giant amplification due to coherent four-wave mixing of polaritons. Noise reduction below the thermal noise level was also observed.

Quantum statistics of light emitted from a pillar microcavity

Timur A. Khudaiberganov, Igor Yu. Chestnov, Sergei M Arakelyan

Abstract A quantum behavior of the light emitted by exciton polaritons excited in a pillar semiconductor microcavity with embedded quantum well is investigated. Considering the bare excitons and photon modes as coupled quantum oscillators allows for an accurate accounting of the nonlinear and dissipative effects. In particular, using the method of quantum states presentation in a quantum phase space via quasiprobability functions (namely, a P-function and a Wigner function), we study the effect of the laser and the exciton-photon detuning on the second order correlation function of the emitted photons. We determine the conditions for the phenomena of bunching, giant bunching, and antibunching of the emitted light. In particular, we predict the effect of a giant bunching for the case of a large exciton to photon population ratio. Within the domain of parameters supporting a bistability regime we demonstrate the effect of bunching of photons.

Optical bistability and spatial resonator solitons based on exciton-polariton nonlinearity

Ye. Larionova, W. Stolz, Carl O. Weiss

We show experimentally optical bistability and the existence of bright and dark resonator solitons in the strong coupling regime between quantum-well excitons and the optical field in a semiconductor microcavity. The strong coupling results in a quasi-particle exciton-polariton, which gives access to positive and negative reactive and dissipative optical nonlinearities, as opposed to the usual room temperature semiconductor nonlinearities possessing essentially only one sign. The existence range and the properties of solitons can be varied widely by the detuning between polariton states and light frequency.

Bose-Einstein condensate of cavity exciton polaritons in a trap

Nina S. Voronova, Andrei A. Elistratov, Yu. E. Lozovik

The properties of traps for exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity with an embedded quantum well have been considered. The behavior of the two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of photons and excitons described by the coupled system of Gross-Pitaevskii equations has been investigated. The analytical solutions for weak-confinement traps have been found in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In the case of strong confinement, the behavior of the condensate has been investigated and constraints on the possible values of the chemical potential of the system have been obtained. The wavefunctions and generally different spatial profiles of the coupled photon and exciton condensates have been found.

Timur A. Khudaiberganov, Igor Yu. Chestnov, Sevak Demirchyan +1 more

Quantum statistical properties of the light emitted by a semiconductor microcavity with embedded quantum wells are studied. The unique quantum solution for the system of coupled excitonic and photonic modes was obtained. This solution predicts both bunching and antibunching of the photonic fraction of the condensate.
