Abstract

The properties of traps for exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity with an embedded quantum well have been considered. The behavior of the two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of photons and excitons described by the coupled system of Gross-Pitaevskii equations has been investigated. The analytical solutions for weak-confinement traps have been found in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. In the case of strong confinement, the behavior of the condensate has been investigated and constraints on the possible values of the chemical potential of the system have been obtained. The wavefunctions and generally different spatial profiles of the coupled photon and exciton condensates have been found.

Coupled condensates of excitons and photons in the trap

Nina S. Voronova, Andrei A. Elistratov, Yu. E. Lozovik

The properties of traps for exciton polaritons in a semiconductor optical microcavity with an embedded quantum well were considered. The two-component Bose condensate of photons and excitons was described by a coupled system of equations similar to the Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and analytical solutions in the Thomas-Fermi approximation were obtained for traps with weak exciton confinement. For strong confinement, condensate behavior was investigated numerically, and spatial profiles of coupled condensates of excitons and photons (which appear to be different in general case) were determined.

Coupled exciton-photon Bose condensate in path integral formalism

Andrei A. Elistratov, Yu. E. Lozovik

We study the behavior of exciton polaritons in an optical microcavity with an embedded semiconductor quantum well. We use a two-component exciton-photon approach formulated in terms of path integral formalism. In order to describe spatial distributions of the exciton and photon condensate densities, the two coupled equations of the Gross-Pitaevskii type are derived. For a homogeneous system, we find the noncondensate photon and exciton spectra, calculate the coefficients of transformation from the exciton-photon basis to the lower-upper polariton basis, and obtain the exciton and photon occupation numbers of the lower and upper polariton branches for nonzero temperatures. For an inhomogeneous system, the set of coupled equations of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes type is derived. The equations govern the spectra and spatial distributions of noncondensate photons and excitons.

Excited states of exciton-polariton condensates in 2D and 1D harmonic traps

C. Trallero‐Giner, M. V. Durnev, Y. Núñez-Fernández +3 more

We present a theoretical description of Bogolyubov-type excitations of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in semiconductor microcavities. For a typical two-dimensional (2D) BEC we focus on two limiting cases, the weak- and strong-coupling regimes, where a perturbation theory and the Thomas-Fermi approximation, respectively, are valid. We calculate integrated scattering intensity spectra for probing the collective excitations of the condensate in both considered limits. Moreover, in relation to recent experiments on optical modulation allowing localization of condensates in a trap with well-controlled shape and dimensions, we study the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) motion of the BEC in microwires and report the corresponding Bogolyubov excitation spectrum. We show that in the 1D case the characteristic polariton-polariton interaction constant is expressed as ${g}_{1}=3\ensuremath{\lambda}\mathcal{N}/(2{L}_{y})$ ($\ensuremath{\lambda}$ is the 2D polariton-polariton interaction parameter in the cavity, $\mathcal{N}$ the number of the particles, and ${L}_{y}$ the wire cavity width). We reveal some interesting features for 2D and 1D Bogolyubov spectra for both repulsive $(\ensuremath{\lambda}>0)$ and attractive $(\ensuremath{\lambda}<0)$ interactions.

Two-species Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice: analytical approximate formulae

R. Cipolatti, Leonardo Villegas-Lelovsky, Ming-Chiang Chung +1 more

Abstract Employing a general variational method and perturbation theory, we derived explicit solutions for the description of one-dimensional two species Bose–Einstein condensates confined by a harmonic trap potential in an optical lattice. We consider the system of two coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations (GPE) and derive explicit expressions for the chemical potentials and wavefunctions in terms of the atom–atom interaction parameters and laser intensity. We have compared our results with the numerical solutions of the GPE and performed a quantitative analysis for the both considered methods. We underline the importance of the obtained explicit solutions to characterize the density profile or degree of miscibility of the two components.

Excitations in a Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensate of Exciton Polaritons

Michiel Wouters, Iacopo Carusotto

We develop a mean-field theory of the dynamics of a nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. The spectrum of elementary excitations around the stationary state is analytically studied by means of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A diffusive behavior of the Goldstone mode is found in the spatially homogeneous case and new features are predicted for the Josephson effect in a two-well geometry.

Exciton–polariton condensation

Jonathan Keeling, Natalia G. Berloff

We review, aiming at an audience of final year undergraduates, the phenomena observed in, and properties of, microcavity exciton–polariton condensates. These are condensates of mixed light and matter, consisting of superpositions of photons in semiconductor microcavities and excitons in quantum wells. Because of the imperfect confinement of the photon component, exciton–polaritons have a finite lifetime, and have to be continuously re-populated. Therefore, exciton–polariton condensates lie somewhere between equilibrium Bose–Einstein condensates and lasers. We review in particular the evidence for condensation, the coherence properties studied experimentally, and the wide variety of spatial structures either observed or predicted to exist in exciton–polariton condensates, including quantised vortices and other coherent structures. We also discuss the question of superfluidity in a non-equilibrium system, reviewing both the experimental attempts to investigate superfluidity to date, and the theoretical suggestions of how it may be further elucidated.
