The Characteristics of Ar and Cs Mixed Faraday Optical Filter Under Different Signal Powers

Abstract

The characteristics of the 852 nm cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter with Ar-filled cesium cell under different signal powers are investigated. The transmittance spectra are measured by changing the input laser power from 0.05 to 10 mW (the irradiance from 12.03 to 2406.88 W/m2) and the buffer gas pressure from 1 to 10 torr. The spectra without the buffer gas are also measured. The results reveal the entirely different variations of the transmittance spectra for the cells with and without the buffer gas. For the cell without the buffer gas, the sidebands of the spectrum get higher and the bandwidth is broadened as the input power increases. However, for the cell with the buffer gas, the sidebands are suppressed and the bandwidth is reduced. A single-peak transmittance spectrum will be formed eventually. These phenomena are remarkable at relatively high pressures of Ar (5 and 10 torr), which may be very suitable for applications such as Faraday laser, optical frequency standard, laser frequency stabilization, and laser locking. The sidebands of the spectrum can also be used to restrict the high input laser power which may cause damage to the system.

Sidebands suppression of 852 nm Cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter by argon gas

Junyu Xiong, Longfei Yin, Bin Luo +2 more

In this work, sidebands suppression brought by buffer gas argon (Ar) in cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at 852 nm is investigated. FADOF performances at different Ar pressures (0 torr, 1 torr, 5 torr and 10 torr) are compared, and a single-peak transmittance spectrum with peak transmittance up to 80% is achieved at the high Ar pressure. A detailed analysis shows that, this sidebands suppression comes from the depopulation enhancement by the buffer gas. This result can be generalized to other FADOFs with similar level structures such as the D2 lines of other alkali metal atoms.

Cesium Faraday Optical Filter for Wireless Optical Communication System

Pengyuan Chang, Hangbo Shi, Zhiyang Wang +4 more

We report the newest experimental results of Cs-D2line 852 nm Faraday optical filters for wireless optical communication system. We measure the transmission spectrum of the Faraday optical filters with different temperature, magnetic field intensity, and with or without buffer gas. The Cs-852nm Faraday optical filters is based on atomic vapor cell, with the increase of magnetic field strength and the filling of buffer gas at a certain pressure. The bandwidth, transmittance and line shape of the transmission spectrum are changed obviously. The results can be used for free-space laser communications.

Cesium faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter with buffer gas

Junyu Xiong, Longfei Yin, Hong Mei Guo +1 more

We report a cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF), of which the atom vapor cell is filled with argon as buffer gas. The result shows that, with the help of buffer gas, the sidebands of the FADOF are removed and a transmittance spectrum with one single peak is realized.

Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter with a single transmission peak using a buffer-gas-filled rubidium cell

Xiaobo Xue, Zhiming Tao, Qinqing Sun +5 more

A Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with a single transmission peak is achieved by using a buffer-gas (argon, 2 Torr)-filled rubidium cell. At room temperature, the transmission is 0.2% and the bandwidth of the transmission peak is 0.65 GHz. At a temperature of 63° C, the transmission rises to a maximum of 30.6%, with a bandwidth of 1.41 GHz. This FADOF may replace the use of interference filters or virtually imaged phased arrays in imaging modalities.

Signal intensity influences on the atomic Faraday filter

Bin Luo, Longfei Yin, Junyu Xiong +2 more

Previous studies of the Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) mainly focus on the weak signal light filtering, without regard for the influences of the signal light intensity on the filter itself. However, in some applications the signal light is strong enough to change the filter's performance. In this work, the influences of the signal light intensity on the transmittance spectrum is experimentally investigated in a 780 nm Rb85 FADOF in both the line-center and wings operation modes. The results show that the transmittance spectrum varies significantly with the signal light intensity. As the signal light increases, some existing transmittance peaks decline, some new transmittance peaks appear, and the maximum transmittance peak frequency may change. The spectrum in strong signal lights can be quite different from those calculated by programs in the condition of weak signal lights. These results are important for applications of the FADOF in the condition of strong signal lights.

A Dual-Frequency Faraday Laser

Tiantian Shi, Xiaolei Guan, Pengyuan Chang +5 more

The Faraday laser, with Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) as frequency-selection element, is a natural narrow-bandwidth light source for laser physic experiments. In this work, a dual-frequency (DF) Faraday laser is demonstrated for the first time on Cs D2 line at 852 nm. The frequencies of the two modes of DF Faraday laser hinge on the peak transition frequencies of 852 nm FADOF transmittance spectrum corresponding to the ground state F=4 and F=3. The frequency difference between the two modes is tunable over a range of 1.4 GHz with the temperature of Cs vapor cell inside the FADOF. The linewidth of each laser mode is less than 33 kHz. Furthermore, the most probable linewidth of the beat-note spectra between the two modes is 902.95 Hz at different vapor-cell temperatures. Such a DF Faraday laser has many potential applications in atomic physics, such as sub-Doppler spectroscopy and coherent population trapping atomic clocks.
