Signal intensity influences on the atomic Faraday filter

Abstract

Previous studies of the Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) mainly focus on the weak signal light filtering, without regard for the influences of the signal light intensity on the filter itself. However, in some applications the signal light is strong enough to change the filter's performance. In this work, the influences of the signal light intensity on the transmittance spectrum is experimentally investigated in a 780 nm Rb85 FADOF in both the line-center and wings operation modes. The results show that the transmittance spectrum varies significantly with the signal light intensity. As the signal light increases, some existing transmittance peaks decline, some new transmittance peaks appear, and the maximum transmittance peak frequency may change. The spectrum in strong signal lights can be quite different from those calculated by programs in the condition of weak signal lights. These results are important for applications of the FADOF in the condition of strong signal lights.

Faraday Anomalous Dispersion Optical Filter at the 87Rb D1 Line

To obtain the weak signal light detection from the high background noise,a study on ultra-narrow bandwidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter(FADOF) at the 87Rb D1 line,5S1/2F=2→5P1/2 F′=1transmission(795 nm) is demonstrated experimentally.A sample cell filled with Rubidium atoms in which the proportion of 87Rb is greater than that of the nature rubidium is placed in a homogeneous magnetic field between two crossed Glan-Thompson polarizers. The incident probe light goes through the sample cell, and interacts with the atoms.Because of the Faraday rotation, the function of the filter can be realized. When the experiment condition changed, the result of transmission spectrum changed accordingly. With the temperature rising from 340 K to 360 K,the variation of the transmission spectrum is recorded particularly. And the reason for the variation is analyzed carefully. At a proper temperature and magnetic field,a transmission spectrum narrowed to ~220 MHz is obtained, and the peak transmission is about 48%.The performance of the87Rb D1 line is better than that of the 85Rb.

Sidebands suppression of 852 nm Cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter by argon gas

Junyu Xiong, Longfei Yin, Bin Luo +2 more

In this work, sidebands suppression brought by buffer gas argon (Ar) in cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at 852 nm is investigated. FADOF performances at different Ar pressures (0 torr, 1 torr, 5 torr and 10 torr) are compared, and a single-peak transmittance spectrum with peak transmittance up to 80% is achieved at the high Ar pressure. A detailed analysis shows that, this sidebands suppression comes from the depopulation enhancement by the buffer gas. This result can be generalized to other FADOFs with similar level structures such as the D2 lines of other alkali metal atoms.

Atomic filter based on stimulated Raman transition at the rubidium D1 line

Xiuchao Zhao, Xianping Sun, Maohua Zhu +3 more

We report on a 795 nm atomic filter consisting of a stimulated Raman gain amplifier together with normal Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filtering (FADOF) at the rubidium D1 line. The filter is operated with a single transmission peak. The gain of the filter's transmission light signal is enhanced up to 85-fold compared to case operating without a stimulated Raman transition. Based on atomic coherence, the filter's minimum transmission bandwidth is less than 22 MHz. In each filtering channel, the signal light's frequency can be tuned by changing the detuning of the coupling light. Such a filter with stimulated Raman gain is more efficient in extracting weak signals in the presence of a strong light background compared with the normal FADOF. This expands the range of potential applications in optical communications and lidar technology. This filtering method can also be extended to the lines of other atoms.

Demonstration of Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter with reflection configuration

Yi Liu, Baodong Yang, Junmin Wang +3 more

Abstract A narrow linewidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with reflection configuration is achieved for the first time based on the cesium (Cs) ground state 6S1/2 to the excited state 6P3/2 transition at 852 nm. Compared with the conventional FADOF with transmission configuration, reflection-type FADOF can greatly improve the transmittance of optical filter under the same experimental parameters, because it allows signal light to go and return through the atomic vapor cell. In our experiment, peak transmittance at Cs 6S1/2 F = 4–6P3/2 transition is 81% for the reflection-type FADOF, and while 54% for the transmission-type FADOF when the temperature of Cs vapor cell and the axial magnetic field are 60 °C and 19 G. The idea of this reflection-type FADOF design has the potential to be applied to the FADOF operating between two excited states to obtain higher transmittance.
