Abstract

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) provides promising secure communication, the crucial need for online security in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). QKD is mainly used for distribution of keys securely between two parties and is a commercially available application of Quantum Cryptography (QC). QKD has the ability to enable the authenticated users to detect unwanted attempts by the intruder in trying to gain knowledge of the secret key. Through the fundamental nature of quantum mechanics, in Principle QKD has the distinction of being, unshakable. Quantum cryptography harnesses the counterintuitive behavior of elementary particles such as photons and ensures the confidentiality of information transmitted between two parties. There are many QKD protocols that provide a secure key which include BB84 protocol, BB92 protocol, SARG04 protocol, E91 protocol, COW protocol, DPS protocol ect. In this review the trends and challenges in Quantum Key Distribution is discussed. Also the contribution of QKD towards network security is presented by analyzing its strengths and weakness.

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and the Future of Secure Communications

Godwin Olaoye

As digital communication continues to expand across critical infrastructures, ensuring data security has become more challenging in the face of advancing computational capabilities, especially with the anticipated rise of quantum computers. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) presents a revolutionary approach to secure communications by leveraging the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics, such as superposition and entanglement, to enable the secure exchange of cryptographic keys. Unlike classical encryption methods that rely on computational complexity, QKD ensures unconditional security, as any attempt to intercept the key disturbs the quantum state, revealing the presence of eavesdroppers. This paper explores the current developments in QKD protocols, including BB84 and E91, as well as practical challenges in implementation, such as distance limitations and hardware requirements. Furthermore, it discusses recent advancements in satellite-based QKD, integrated photonics, and quantum networks, highlighting their potential to reshape the landscape of secure global communication. The integration of QKD into future communication infrastructure is positioned to be a cornerstone of post-quantum cryptography, making it a vital technology in the era of quantum computing.

Quantum key distribution and secure communication in the quantum era

Rohit Bantupalli, Kartick Sutradhar, Bheemappa Halavar

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a state-of-the-art development in secure communications that harnesses the principles underlying quantum mechanics to ensure security. QKD, unlike traditional cryptosystems that rely on complex mathematics, ensures security through quantum principles like superposition and entanglement, making any interception attempt detectable. QKD’s security is contingent on various quantum phenomena, such as superposition, entanglement, and the no-cloning theorem, which promises that any effort to intercept will be detectable. This makes QKD theoretically resistant to the threats posed by quantum computing. This chapter explores fundamental QKD protocols, including the fundamental BB84, the entanglement-based E91, and recent advances like measurement device independent QKD (MDI-QKD), which address the constraints in quantum detection. Although some pragmatic hurdles persist, such as signal attenuation in optical fibers, seamless integration into existing infrastructure, and the limited range of land-based transmission. Satellite-based QKD offers a potential solution for extended-distance key distribution, with notable demonstrations supporting the vision of worldwide quantum networks. By considering both the opportunities and the barriers to QKD, this chapter provides crucial information to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. It emphasizes the critical role of QKD in the future of secure communications, notably in a post-quantum world, and highlights trends and research shaping its future trajectory.
