Quantum cryptography (QC) as an important technology to protect the security of the future network communication, has gained extensive attention from both academia and industry in recent years. This paper provides a concise up-to-date review of QC, including Quantum key distribution (QKD), Quantum authentication, Quantum public-key cryptography (QPKC), and so on. Our aim is to pave a comprehensive and solid starting ground for interested readers. We firstly clarify the definition of QC. Secondly, we present the current understanding of QC from different levels, including the basic knowledge of quantum information processing, QC protocols and the attacks in QC. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in this hopeful field.
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) provides promising secure communication, the crucial need for online security in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). QKD is mainly used for distribution of keys securely between two parties and is a commercially available application of Quantum Cryptography (QC). QKD has the ability to enable the authenticated users to detect unwanted attempts by the intruder in trying to gain knowledge of the secret key. Through the fundamental nature of quantum mechanics, in Principle QKD has the distinction of being, unshakable. Quantum cryptography harnesses the counterintuitive behavior of elementary particles such as photons and ensures the confidentiality of information transmitted between two parties. There are many QKD protocols that provide a secure key which include BB84 protocol, BB92 protocol, SARG04 protocol, E91 protocol, COW protocol, DPS protocol ect. In this review the trends and challenges in Quantum Key Distribution is discussed. Also the contribution of QKD towards network security is presented by analyzing its strengths and weakness.
The convergence of quantum cryptography with applications used in everyday life is a topic drawing attention from the industrial and academic worlds. The development of quantum electronics has led to the practical achievement of quantum devices that are already available on the market and waiting for their first application on a broader scale. A major aspect of quantum cryptography is the methodology of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which is used to generate and distribute symmetric cryptographic keys between two geographically separate users using the principles of quantum physics. In previous years, several successful QKD networks have been created to test the implementation and interoperability of different practical solutions. This article surveys previously applied methods, showing techniques for deploying QKD networks and current challenges of QKD networking. Unlike studies focusing on optical channels and optical equipment, this survey focuses on the network aspect by considering network organization, routing and signaling protocols, simulation techniques, and a software-defined QKD networking approach.
Quantum Cryptography is a novel approach to make the information and network world more secure. Unlike classical cryptography, quantum cryptography ensures the security of communication because it is based on the laws of Quantum Mechanics; a branch of physics that deals with the fundamental behavior of matter and their energies to the levels of subatomic particles. These particles and their intrinsic properties such as photon polarization and entanglement allow us to develop an unbreakable system of cryptographic information. Conventionally, the security has been primarily concerned with the secured distribution of secret key carried over an insecure channel. However, in Quantum Cryptographic systems the transmission of secret key is done using aforementioned laws of nature through a secured quantum channel highly susceptible to intrusion detection. Consequently, the Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), in conjunction with protocols such as BB84 protocol has emerged as an ultimate modern secured communication system. This article concentrates on briefly reviewing quantum cryptography, some recent developments and reports of its vulnerabilities.
The use of quantum cryptography in everyday applications has gained attention in both industrial and academic fields. Due to advancements in quantum electronics, practical quantum devices are already available in the market, and ready for wider use. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a crucial aspect of quantum cryptography, which involves generating and distributing symmetric cryptographic keys between geographically separated users using principles of quantum physics. Many successful QKD networks have been established to test different solutions. The objective of this paper is to delve into the potential of utilizing established routing design techniques in the context of quantum key distribution, a field distinguished by its unique properties rooted in the principles of quantum mechanics. However, the implementation of these techniques poses substantial challenges, including quantum memory decoherence, key rate generation, latency delays, inherent noise in quantum systems, limited communication ranges, and the necessity for highly specialized hardware. This paper conducts an in-depth examination of essential research pertaining to the design methodologies for quantum key distribution. It also explores the fundamental aspects of quantum routing and the associated properties inherent to quantum QKD. This paper elucidates the necessary steps for constructing efficient and resilient QKD networks. In summarizing the techniques relevant to QKD networking and routing, including their underlying principles, protocols, and challenges, this paper sheds light on potential applications and delineates future research directions in this burgeoning field.
