NON-UNITARY TRANSFORMATION OF QUANTUM TIME-DEPENDENT NON-HERMITIAN SYSTEMS

Abstract

We provide a new perspective on non-Hermitian evolution in quantum mechanics by emphasizing the same method as in the Hermitian quantum evolution. We first give a precise description of the non unitary transformation and the associated evolution, and collecting the basic results around it and postulating the norm preserving. This cautionary postulate imposing that the time evolution of a non Hermitian quantum system preserves the inner products between the associated states must not be read naively. We also give an example showing that the solutions of time-dependent non Hermitian Hamiltonian systems given by a linear combination of SU(1,1) and SU(2) are obtained thanks to time-dependent non-unitary transformation.

A Real Expectation Value of the Time-dependent Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians*

F. Kecita, Abdelhafid Bounames, Mustapha Maamache

Abstract With the aim to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation associated to a time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we introduce a unitary transformation that maps the Hamiltonian to a time-independent   -symmetric one. Consequently, the solution of time-dependent Schrödinger equation becomes easily deduced and the evolution preserves the  ( t ) PT −inner product, where  ( t ) is a obtained from the charge conjugation operator  through a time dependent unitary transformation. Moreover, the expectation value of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the  ( t ) PT normed states is guaranteed to be real. As an illustration, we present a specific quantum system given by a quantum oscillator with time-dependent mass subjected to a driving linear complex time-dependent potential.

Time evolution of quantum systems with time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and the pseudo Hermitian invariant operator

Mustapha Maamache, Oum Kaltoum Djeghiour, Walid Koussa +1 more

We study the time evolution of quantum systems with a time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian given by a linear combination of SU(1,1) and SU(2) generators. With a time-dependent metric, the pseudo-Hermitian invariant operator is constructed in the same manner as for both the SU(1,1) and SU(2) systems. The exact common solutions of the Schrödinger equations for both the SU(1,1) and SU(2) systems are obtained in terms of eigenstates of the pseudo-Hermitian invariant operator.

Quantum Mechanics Based on Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (Recent Trends in Exponential Asymptotics)

Carl M. Bender

A physical theory of quantum mechanics can be based on a complex Hamiltonian that is not Hermitian but instead satisfies the physical condition of space-time reflection symmetry ( $P\mathcal{T}$ symmetry). Thus, there are infinitely many new Hamiltonians that one can construct that might explain experimental data. One would think that a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian would give a quantum theory that violates unitarity. However, if $P\mathcal{T}$ symmetry is not broken, it is possible to use a physical symmetry of the Hamiltonian to construct an inner product whose associated norm is positive definite. This construction is general and works for any $P\mathcal{T}$ -symmetric Hamiltonian. The dynamics is governed by unitary time evolution. This formulation does not conflict with the requirements of conventional quantum mechanics. There are many possible observable and experimental consequences of extending quantum mechanics into the complex domain, both in particle physics and in solid state physics.

Time-dependent quantum systems and the invariant Hermitian operator

Y. Lai, J.-Q. Liang, Harald J W Müller-Kirsten +1 more

We study the time evolution of quantum systems with a time-dependent Hamiltonian given by a linear combination of SU(1,1) and SU(2) generators. The invariant Hermitian operator is constructed in the same manner as for both the SU(1,1) and SU(2) systems. With the help of the invariant Hermitian operator we obtain not only the exact solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation but also the time-evolution operator. The adiabatic and nonadiabatic Berry phases are calculated with the exact solutions. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
