Non-Unitary evolution of quantum time-dependent non-Hermitian systems

Abstract

We provide a new perspective on non-Hermitian evolution in quantum mechanics by emphasizing the same method as in the Hermitian quantum evolution. We first give a precise description of the non unitary evolution, and collecting the basic results around it and postulating the norm preserving. This cautionary postulate imposing that the time evolution of a non Hermitian quantum system preserves the inner products between the associated states must not be read naively. We also give an example showing that the solutions of time-dependent non Hermitian Hamiltonian systems given by a linear combination of SU(1,1) and SU(2) are obtained thanks to time-dependent non-unitary transformation.

A Real Expectation Value of the Time-dependent Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians*

F. Kecita, Abdelhafid Bounames, Mustapha Maamache

Abstract With the aim to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation associated to a time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, we introduce a unitary transformation that maps the Hamiltonian to a time-independent   -symmetric one. Consequently, the solution of time-dependent Schrödinger equation becomes easily deduced and the evolution preserves the  ( t ) PT −inner product, where  ( t ) is a obtained from the charge conjugation operator  through a time dependent unitary transformation. Moreover, the expectation value of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the  ( t ) PT normed states is guaranteed to be real. As an illustration, we present a specific quantum system given by a quantum oscillator with time-dependent mass subjected to a driving linear complex time-dependent potential.

Time evolution of quantum systems with time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and the pseudo Hermitian invariant operator

Mustapha Maamache, Oum Kaltoum Djeghiour, Walid Koussa +1 more

We study the time evolution of quantum systems with a time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian given by a linear combination of SU(1,1) and SU(2) generators. With a time-dependent metric, the pseudo-Hermitian invariant operator is constructed in the same manner as for both the SU(1,1) and SU(2) systems. The exact common solutions of the Schrödinger equations for both the SU(1,1) and SU(2) systems are obtained in terms of eigenstates of the pseudo-Hermitian invariant operator.

Time-dependent quantum systems and the invariant Hermitian operator

Y. Lai, J.-Q. Liang, Harald J W Müller-Kirsten +1 more

We study the time evolution of quantum systems with a time-dependent Hamiltonian given by a linear combination of SU(1,1) and SU(2) generators. The invariant Hermitian operator is constructed in the same manner as for both the SU(1,1) and SU(2) systems. With the help of the invariant Hermitian operator we obtain not only the exact solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation but also the time-evolution operator. The adiabatic and nonadiabatic Berry phases are calculated with the exact solutions. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Unitary evolution for a two-level quantum system in fractional-time scenario

Danilo Cius, Luiz Menon Junior, M. A. F. dos Santos +2 more

The time-evolution operator obtained from the fractional-time Schrödinger equation (FTSE) is said to be nonunitary since it does not preserve the norm of the vector state in time. As done in the time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum formalism, for a traceless non-Hermitian two-level quantum system, we demonstrate that it is possible to map the nonunitary time-evolution operator in a unitary one. It is done by considering a dynamical Hilbert space with a time-dependent metric operator, constructed from a Hermitian time-dependent Dyson map, in respect to which the system evolves in a unitary way, and the standard quantum mechanics interpretation can be made properly. To elucidate our approach, we consider three examples of Hamiltonian operators and their corresponding unitary dynamics obtained from the solutions of FTSE, and the respective Dyson maps.

On the pseudo-Hermitian invariant method for the time-dependent Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Boubakeur Khantoul, Abdelhafid Bounames, Mustapha Maamache

We propose a scheme to deal with certain time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian operators $H(t)$ that generate a real phase in their time-evolution. This involves the use of invariant operators $I_{PH}(t)$ that are pseudo-Hermitian with respect to the time-dependent metric operator and which implies that the dynamics is governed by unitary time evolution. Furthermore, $H(t)$ is not generally quasi-Hermitian and does not define an observable of the system but $I_{PH}(t)$ obeys a quasi-hermiticity transformation as in the completely time-independent Hamiltonian systems case. The harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent frequency under the action of a complex time-dependent linear potential is considered as an illustrative example.
