Abstract

The possibility of using photon counters based on avalanche photodiodes to implement a quantum system for key distribution is shown. The security of encryption key distribution is realized with application of eavesdropper detection technique. The detection technique uses quantum control signal. The structural scheme of the quantum system is presented. The effect of photodetector parameters and the length of optical fiber on the eavesdropper detection time have been determined. The conditions and characteristics of the system to organize a secure channel for generation and transfer of encryption keys over optical fiber communication lines have been determined.

Multichannel quantum system of fiber-optics secure communication

О. К. Барановский, Иван Романович Гулаков, Евгений Викторович Василиу +2 more

The method and the scheme of multichannel quantum system of secure communication for transfer of confidential data on optical fiber are developed. The considered scheme combines quantum key distribution with quantum secure data transmission. Such approach does not give possibility to the eavesdropper to decipher that part of information, which he can receive before the detection. The suggested scheme provides higher security level of transferred confidential information, than known, which use traditional pro-tocols of symmetric enciphering in a combination to quantum key distribution. It is found out that for the transmission protected in such a way on optical fiber the choice of wavelengths of 850 and 1625 nanometers is optimum. It is found out that when using in such systems of the avalanche photo diode FD-115L it is possible to provide a speed of information transfer up to 0,8 Mbps in one channel. For increase in speed of transfer, it is proposed to use two and more channels of transfer.

Synchronization in Quantum Key Distribution Systems

Anton Pavlovich Pljonkin, Konstantin E. Rumyantsev, Pradeep Kumar Singh

In the description of quantum key distribution systems, much attention is paid to the operation of quantum cryptography protocols. The main problem is the insufficient study of the synchronization process of quantum key distribution systems. This paper contains a general description of quantum cryptography principles. A two-line fiber-optic quantum key distribution system with phase coding of photon states in transceiver and coding station synchronization mode was examined. A quantum key distribution system was built on the basis of the scheme with automatic compensation of polarization mode distortions. Single-photon avalanche diodes were used as optical radiation detecting devices. It was estimated how the parameters used in quantum key distribution systems of optical detectors affect the detection of the time frame with attenuated optical pulse in synchronization mode with respect to its probabilistic and time-domain characteristics. A design method was given for the process that detects the time frame that includes an optical pulse during synchronization. This paper describes the main quantum communication channel attack methods by removing a portion of optical emission. This paper describes the developed synchronization algorithm that takes into account the time required to restore the photodetector’s operation state after the photon has been registered during synchronization. The computer simulation results of the developed synchronization algorithm were analyzed. The efficiency of the developed algorithm with respect to synchronization process protection from unauthorized gathering of optical emission is demonstrated herein.

DEVICE FOR BINARY DATA TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING OVER A FIBEROPTIC COMMUNICATION CHANNEL

A. M. Timofeev

When transferring data over optical fiber communication channels, it is required to provide data security and the authenticity of their source. To limit the access to the data for a third party, there can be applied quantum-cryptographical systems which are supposed to transfer every data bit by means of low power optical signals containing radiation photons the number of which could be in the range from 10 to 1, however, are far from being perfect and suffer from shortcomings, the main of which being a large number of errors due to the depolarization effect of optical radiation. The aim of this work was, therefore, to create device for sending and receiving confidential data which could provide complete security of transferred data, inherent to quantum-cryptographical communication systems at the same time could have a low number of such errors. A device for quantum-cryptographic communication system with a photon counter applied as a receiving module has been proposed. The possibility to use silicon avalanche photodetectors operating in the photon counting mode for confidential information transmission systems and defining authenticity of the source of transmitted information has been shown. I develop modern optical fiber communication system incorporating avalanche photodetector photon counter as a receiving module, that allow to detect unauthorized access to information and violation of its integrity and speed up the exchange of information in comparison with well-known quantum-cryptographical communication systems.

Cryptographic robustness of practical quantum cryptography: BB84 key distribution protocol

S. N. Molotkov

In real fiber-optic quantum cryptography systems, the avalanche photodiodes are not perfect, the source of quantum states is not a single-photon one, and the communication channel is lossy. For these reasons, key distribution is impossible under certain conditions for the system parameters. A simple analysis is performed to find relations between the parameters of real cryptography systems and the length of the quantum channel that guarantee secure quantum key distribution when the eavesdropper’s capabilities are limited only by fundamental laws of quantum mechanics while the devices employed by the legitimate users are based on current technologies. Critical values are determined for the rate of secure real-time key generation that can be reached under the current technology level. Calculations show that the upper bound on channel length can be as high as 300 km for imperfect photodetectors (avalanche photodiodes) with present-day quantum efficiency (η ≈ 20%) and dark count probability (p dark ∼ 10−7).

Features of the Photon Pulse Detection Algorithm in the Quantum Key Distribution System

Anton Pavlovich Pljonkin

A two-pass fiber-optic quantum key distribution system with phase-encoded photon states in synchronization mode has been investigated. The possibility of applying the analytical expressions for the calculation of the correct detection probability of the signal time window at synchronization has been proved. A modernized algorithm of photon pulse detection, taking into account the dead time of the single-photon avalanche photodiode was proposed. The method of engineering an optical pulse detection process during the synchronization in a quantum key distribution system has been offered.

Using single-photon detectors for quantum key distribution in an experimental fiber-optic communication system

V. L. Kurochkin, A. V. Zverev, Yu. V. Kurochkin +2 more

This paper gives experimental results of quantum key distribution on a fiber-optic setup at a telecom wavelength of 1555 nm. A self-compensated two-channel optical circuit is used. Quantum key distribution was performed by coding the phase states of single photons radiated by a pulsed semiconductor laser in two alternative nonorthogonal bases. Specially developed single photon counters based on InGaAs: InP avalanche photodiodes were employed as high-sensitivity photodetectors. The results of investigation of the quantum efficiency, probability of afterpulses, and noise level for various operating modes of the detectors at temperatures from −40 to −60°C are given. A key distribution rate of 450 bit/s was obtained for a single-mode fiber-optic quantum communication channel between the receiver and sender 25 km long at a laser pulse clock frequency of 5 MHz and an average number of photons per pulse of about 0.2. For the achieved photodetector characteristics, the average number of errors in the quantum key did not exceed 3.7%.
