Abstract

The generation of the ring mode-locked laser containing resonant absorption medium in the cavity was investigated. It is shown that near the strong resonant absorption lines a condensation of polaritons arises. Intensive radiation looks like as superradiance in a medium without population inversion. We studied theoretically the microscopic mechanism of these phenomena. It was shown that in this system in absorbing medium a strong self-induced difference combination parametric resonance exists. Superradiance on polaritonic modes in the absorbing medium are due to the emergence of light-induced resonant polarization as a result of fast periodic nonadiabatic quantum jumps in the absorber.

In this paper, the radiation of a two-level resonant medium placed in a cavity and excited by a laser pulse with periodic phase modulation is studied theoretically. The analysis is carried out on the basis of an analytical and numerical solution of the system of Maxwell-Bloch equations under conditions when the regime of strong coupling of the field and matter is realized. Under these conditions, this system is similar to a polariton laser. A high excitation efficiency of a polariton laser by a phase-modulated radiation pulse compared with a pulse without phase modulation of the carrier frequency is shown. It is shown that the main reason for the effective excitation of polariton modes of the medium is the occurrence of a difference combination parametric resonance. The results obtained open up new possibilities in the excitation of radiation from polariton lasers by low-power pumping laser radiation with frequency modulation.

Mechanism of Rabi-excitation of discrete modes outside the spectral line of a superradiant laser

E. R. Kocharovskaya, Vl. V. Kocharovsky

By means of numerical modeling of nonlinear and analytical solution of linearized Maxwell-Bloch equations, we find an intriguing regime of a superradiant laser with a symmetric low-Q Fabry-Perot cavity equipped with a distributed feedback of counter-propagating waves. We find that, in a wide range of parameters, there is lasing of a strongly-asymmetric self-modulated powerful polariton mode accompanied by excitation of several almost symmetric weak polariton or electromagnetic modes. The frequency of the powerful mode is approximately coincides with a center of the laser spectral line, and the frequencies of the weak modes are outside the spectral line of an active medium. We show that such a lasing takes place due to formation of a self-consistent inhomogeneous asymmetric grating of population inversion of active centers that provides undamped Rabi oscillations of the population inversion and dipole moments of centers. The grating makes the powerful ‘central’ mode strongly asymmetric, and the Rabi oscillations of active centers excite the weak ‘sideband’ modes due to the quadratic resonant nonlinearity of the two-level active medium.

Abstract The radiation of a two-level resonant medium that is placed into a cavity and is excited by a periodically phase modulated laser pulse is studied theoretically. The radiation is analyzed based on the analytical and numerical solutions of the system of Maxwell–Bloch equations under conditions of a strong coupling between the field and the matter. Under these conditions, this system is similar to a polariton laser. The excitation efficiency of a polariton laser by a phase-modulated radiation pulse is shown to be high compared to a pulse without phase modulation of the carrier frequency. It is shown that the main reason for the efficient excitation of polariton modes in the medium is the appearance of difference combination parametric resonance. The obtained results open up new possibilities for the excitation of radiation of polariton lasers by low-power frequency-modulated pump laser radiation.

Intracavity laser pumping of matter and phase transitions in the system of electromagnetic field and optically dense resonant medium without population inversion

Under conditions of intracavity laser pumping of the absorbing cell the possibility of high-temperature BEC-like phase transitions in polariton assemble is shown. It manifests in spectral features of the field-matter-cavity system and results in the "spectrum" condensation.

Oscillatory instability of an induced absorber in a ring cavity

Markus Lindberg, S. W. Koch, H. Haug

The instabilities of a nonlinear optical medium with induced absorption in a ring cavity are theoretically analyzed. Stable, bistable, and unstable stationary solutions are found for various values of incident intensity and detuning. The dynamic treatment yields, in the unstable regime, oscillations of the transmitted intensity in various modes for constant incident intensity. If the medium relaxation time is short compared with the round-trip time, oscillatory solutions are obtained, which show strong locking of the oscillation frequency to multiples of the inverse round-trip time. If the round-trip time is comparable with the medium relaxation time, numerical integrations yield periodic solutions with substructures because of the mismatch of the two characteristic times.

Self-induced transparency and coherent population trapping of ^87Rb vapor in a mode-locked laser

Koji Masuda, C. Affolderbach, G. Mileti +2 more

Simultaneous self-induced transparency and a dark line resonance are observed inside a mode-locked laser. The circulating pulse, tuned to the 795-nm optical resonance of rubidium, has sufficient intensity to create at each passage a population inversion-return to ground state, typical of self-induced transparency. A drop in fluorescence (dark line resonance), is observed as the repetition rate is tuned to a submultiple of the hyperfine ground-state splitting.
