Abstract

Under conditions of intracavity laser pumping of the absorbing cell the possibility of high-temperature BEC-like phase transitions in polariton assemble is shown. It manifests in spectral features of the field-matter-cavity system and results in the "spectrum" condensation.

High-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons: realization under the intracavity laser pumping of matter condition

Valentin Averchenko, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan +5 more

A quantum model of Bose-Einstein condensation based on processes involving polaritons excited in an intracavity absorbing cell with resonance atoms, which is manifested in the spectral characteristics of the system, is considered. It is shown that the spectral 'condensation' appears which is directly related to the degeneracy of a weakly interacting gas of polaritons resulting in quasi-condensation at room temperature. The possibility of obtaining polariton condensation as a new phase state by using the confinement of polaritons in an atomic optical harmonic trap is discussed.

Polariton condensation, superradiance and difference combination parametric resonance in mode-locked laser

Sergei N Bagayev, Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov +3 more

The generation of the ring mode-locked laser containing resonant absorption medium in the cavity was investigated. It is shown that near the strong resonant absorption lines a condensation of polaritons arises. Intensive radiation looks like as superradiance in a medium without population inversion. We studied theoretically the microscopic mechanism of these phenomena. It was shown that in this system in absorbing medium a strong self-induced difference combination parametric resonance exists. Superradiance on polaritonic modes in the absorbing medium are due to the emergence of light-induced resonant polarization as a result of fast periodic nonadiabatic quantum jumps in the absorber.

Lasing and high-temperature phase transitions in atomic systems with dressed-state polaritons

Igor Yu. Chestnov, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan

We consider the fundamental problem of high-temperature phase transitions in the system of high-density two-level atoms off-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity. OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed-state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition, we analyze the problem of a thermodynamically equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing a real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of the atomic DSs thermalization process. Such a transition is also connected with condensed (coherent) properties of low branch DS polaritons occurring in the cavity. For describing nonequilibrium phase transitions we derive Maxwell-Bloch--like equations which account for cavity decay rate, collisional decay rate, and spontaneous emission. Various aspects of transitions to laser field formation by using atomic DS levels for both positive and negative detuning of a pump field from atomic transition frequency are studied in detail. It is revealed that for positive atom-light detuning DS lasing can be obtained in the presence of quasiequilibrium DS population that corresponds to a true two-level atomic system with the inversion in a nonresonant limit.

Lasing and phase transition in atomic system with dressed states

Igor Yu. Chestnov, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan

The problem of phase transitions in the system of high-density gas of two-level atoms non-resonantly interacting with a pump field in the presence of optical collisions (OCs) and placed in the cavity is studied. The OCs are considered in the framework of thermalization of atomic dressed state (DS) population. For the case of a strong atom-field coupling condition we analyze the problem of thermodynamic equilibrium superradiant phase transition for the order parameter representing real amplitude of cavity mode and taking place as a result of the atomic DS thermalization process. At the same time such a transition can be connected with condensed (coherent) properties of low branch DS-polaritons occurring in the cavity. Various aspects of non-equilibrium phase transition to laser field generation by using atomic DS levels are studied in detail. It is important that for positive atom-light detuning DS lasing can be obtained in the presence of quasi-equilibrium DS population that corresponds to a true two-level atomic system with inversion in perturbative limit.

From polariton condensates to highly photonic quantum degenerate states of bosonic matter

Marc Aßmann, Jean-Sebastian Tempel, Franziska Veit +7 more

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a thermodynamic phase transition of an interacting Bose gas. Its key signatures are remarkable quantum effects like superfluidity and a phonon-like Bogoliubov excitation spectrum, which have been verified for atomic BECs. In the solid state, BEC of exciton-polaritons has been reported. Polaritons are strongly coupled light-matter quasiparticles in semiconductor microcavities and composite bosons. However, they are subject to dephasing and decay and need external pumping to reach a steady state. Accordingly the polariton BEC is a nonequilibrium process of a degenerate polariton gas in self-equilibrium, but out of equilibrium with the baths it is coupled to and therefore deviates from the thermodynamic phase transition seen in atomic BECs. Here we show that key signatures of BEC can even be observed without fulfilling the self-equilibrium condition in a highly photonic quantum degenerate nonequilibrium system.
