Topological quantum phase transitions on the breathing kagomé lattice

Chao Yu, Ai‐Lei He, Xiao-Ping Liu +1 more

Abstract We explore extensively topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs) of the breathing kagomé lattice model in the presence of staggered fluxes. We obtain rich topological phases, including the Chern insulator (CI) and the second-order topological insulator (SOTI) phases, by tuning the dimerized hopping parameter t 1 ′ and the staggered-flux parameter ϕ . The CI phases can be identified on the basis of the chiral edge states and the non-zero Chern numbers. However, in sharp contrast to the CI phases, the SOTI phases are characterized by the robust corner states and the quantized polarizations. In addition, we explore the TQPTs considering the next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameter t 2 . We demonstrate the existence of two-dimensional SOTIs with broken time-reversal symmetry and reveal the TQPTs between the CIs and the SOTIs.

Quantum Phase Transitions of Topological Insulators

Lan-Feng Liu, Su-Peng Kou

In this paper, starting from a lattice model of topological insulators, we study the quantum phase transitions among different quantum states, including quantum spin Hall state, quantum anomalous Hall state and normal band insulator state by calculating their topological properties (edge states, quantized spin Hall conductivities and the number of zero mode on a Pi-flux). We find that there exist universal features for the topological quantum phase transitions (TQPTs) in different cases : the emergence of nodal fermions at high symmetry points, the non-analytic third derivative of ground state energy and the jumps of the topological "order parameters". In particular, the relation between TQPTs and symmetries of the systems are explored : different TQPTs are protected by different (global) symmetries and then described by different topological "order parameters".

First-order quantum phase transition in three-dimensional topological band insulators

Vladimir Juričić, David Abergel, Alexander V. Balatsky

Topological states of matter are characterized by global topological invariants which change their value across a topological quantum phase transition. It is commonly assumed that the transition between topologically distinct noninteracting gapped phases of fermions is necessarily accompanied by the closing of the band gap as long as the symmetries of the system are maintained. We show that such a quantum phase transition is possible without closing the gap in the case of a three-dimensional topological band insulator. We demonstrate this by calculating the free energy of the minimal model for a topological insulator, the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model, and show that as the band curvature continuously varies, a jump between the band-gap minima corresponding to the topologically trivial and nontrivial insulators occurs. Therefore, this first-order phase transition is a generic feature of three-dimensional topological band insulators. For a certain parameter range we predict a reentrant topological phase transition. We discuss our findings in connection with the recent experimental observation of a discontinuous topological phase transition in a family of topological crystalline insulators.
