Interaction-driven phase transition in one dimensional mirror-symmetry protected topological insulator

Topological crystalline insulators are phases of matter where the crystalline symmetries solely protect the topology. In this work, we explore the effect of many-body interactions in a subclass of topological crystalline insulators, namely the mirror-symmetry protected topological crystalline insulator. Employing a prototypical mirror-symmetric quasi-one-dimensional model, we demonstrate the emergence of a mirror-symmetry protected topological phase and its robustness in the presence of short-range interactions. When longer-range interactions are introduced, we find an interaction-induced topological phase transition between the mirror-symmetry protected topological order and a trivial charge density wave. The results are obtained using density-matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo simulations in applicable limits.

Mirror-symmetry-protected dynamical quantum phase transitions in topological crystalline insulators

Ryo Okugawa, Hiroki Oshiyama, Masayuki Ohzeki

Dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) are topologically characterized in quantum quench dynamics in topological systems. In this paper, we study Loschmidt amplitudes and DQPTs in quantum quenches in mirror-symmetric topological phases. Based on the topological classification of mirror-symmetric insulators, we show that mirror symmetry creates symmetry-protected DQPTs. If mirror symmetry is present, topologically robust DQPTs can occur in quantum quenches, even in high-dimensional time-reversal invariant systems. Then, we also show that symmetry-protected DQPTs occur in quenches in two-dimensional chiral-symmetric systems with mirror symmetry. Mirror-symmetry-protected DQPTs can be easily captured by a reduced rate function. Moreover, we introduce dynamical topological order parameters for mirror-symmetry-protected DQPTs. Finally, we demonstrate DQPTs using lattice models for a time-reversal invariant topological crystalline insulator and a higher-order topological insulator.

Quantum phase transitions of topological insulators with and without gap closing

Stephan Rachel

We consider two-dimensional topological insulators as prototypes of symmetry protected topological phases where spin-orbit coupling gives rise to the topological insulator phase. The appearance of additional non-topological terms might cause quantum phase transitions into trivial phases when this topologically trivial term overweights the spin-orbit coupling. Usually such a phase transition is associated with closing of the bulk gap. In contrast, time-reversal symmetry breaking terms immediately destroy the topological phase without closing of the bulk gap unless the axial spin symmetry remains preserved. These findings are discussed in the context of topological insulators in the presence of interactions.
