Abstract

We investigated the absorption–dispersion properties of near-infrared probe light in the carbon nanotube quantum dot (CNT-QD) nanostructure with spin–orbit (SO) coupling parameter based on quantum mechanical density matrix formalisms. We found that in the presence of SO parameter, the amplification of probe light can be achieved in the presence and lack of population inversion (lasing with and without inversion). Moreover, we realized that the normal and anomalous dispersion of probe light can occur by redacting the incoherent pumping and transverse magnetic fields.

Anomalous dispersion via coherent field in an InGaN/GaN quantum dot nanostructure

The dispersion behaviors of weak probe light in an InGaN/GaN quantum dot (QD) nanostructure driven by a coherent coupling field is investigated. InGaN/GaN QD nanostructure is designed numerically by solving the Schrödinger–Poisson coupled equations. By specific values of QD radius, an appropriate four-level QD nanostructure which is suitable for interaction by a weak probe light and a coherent coupling field is designed. It is shown that switching from normal to anomalous dispersion can be achieved by the intensity of coupling field. Therefore, fast light propagation in this model can be obtained by reduced absorption.

LASING WITH AND WITHOUT POPULATION INVERSION IN A QUANTUM DOT NANOSTRUCTURE VIA AN INCOHERENT PUMPING FIELD

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, Elnaz Ahmadi Sangachin

The effect of incoherent pumping field on absorption spectrum and population inversion in a four-level quantum dot nanostructure are investigated. It is found that with incoherent pumping field the probe field absorption can be converted to probe field gain. Also, it is found that with combine effect of incoherent pumping field and electron tunneling the lasing can be obtained in the absence or presence of population inversion.

Optical bistability induced by spin–orbit coupling in the carbon-nanotube quantum dots

Wei Liu, Hongjun Zhang, Hui Sun +2 more

We theoretically investigate steady-state behaviors of carbon nanotube quantum dots with spin-orbit coupling in a unidirectional ring cavity. Our results show that the spin-orbit coupling can induce optical bistability. In addition to the existence of spin-orbit coupling, switching optical bistability to optical multistability or vice versa is realized by adjusting detuning of the probe field. Our results show that the carbon nanotube quantum dots will possibly be a promising candidate for realizing all-optical switching.

Steady-state absorption–dispersion properties and four-wave mixing process in a quantum dot nanostructure

Xiangying Hao, Jing Wu, Ying Wang

With the presence of the signal pulse, a quantum dot (QD) four-level structure interacting with four fields forms a double-cascade configuration. The linear optical properties for amplification, absorption, and dispersion of two weak near-infrared (NIR) lights in this scheme are investigated. It shows that the amplification, transparency, normal and anomalous dispersion of the probe and signal fields, i.e., the two NIR waves, can be achieved by adjusting the relative phase of the applied lasers, the probe detuning, and the two pump Rabi energies appropriately, while when the signal pulse is removed, the nonlinear optical phenomenon four-wave mixing (FWM) originating from quantum interference is demonstrated. A highly efficient FWM process with a NIR mixing field generated can be realized in this system. Such investigation in a semiconductor QD system with flexible design and widely adjustable parameters may provide new possibilities for realizing the efficient generation and gain of NIR waves and manipulating light propagation between subluminal and superluminal in the solid-state materials.

Polarized control of probe absorption in a single-layer graphene nanostructure system

M. Jamshidnejad, Majid Vaezzadeh, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI +1 more

Abstract In this paper, we investigated the behaviors of the absorptive-dispersive properties of weak probe light based on quantum coherence and interference in a Landau-quantized graphene nanostructure driven by coherent pumping fields. The linear dynamical properties of the grapheme are discussed with reference to the density matrix method and the perturbation theory. It is found that under certain conditions and by an appropriate selection of the parameters of the medium, the absorption, dispersion and group index of the weak probe light can be controlled. Moreover, the superluminal light propagation in the system is accompanied by amplification to make sure that the probe field is amplified as it passes through the system via adjusting the corresponding controllable parameters such as the intensity, the detuning and the relative phase of the applied fields. Moreover, it is observed that the probe amplification can be obtained in the presence or absence of population inversion by properly choosing the system’s parameters. We hope that these results may have useful application in future quantum communicational systems and networks.

On quantum optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotube

Zhenyu Guo, Zhirui Gong, C. P. Sun

We study quantum optical properties of the single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) by introducing the effective interaction between the quantized electromagnetic field and the confined electrons in the SWCNT. Our purpose is to explore the quantum natures of electron transport in the SWCNT by probing its various quantum optical properties relevant to quantum coherence, such as the interference of the scattered and emitted photons, and the bunching and anti-bunching of photons which are characterized by the higher order coherence functions. In the strong field limit, we study the interband Rabi oscillation of electrons driven by a classical light. We also investigate the possible lasing mechanism in superradiation of coherent electrons in a SWCNT driven by a light pump or electron injection, which generate electron population inversion in the higher energy-band of SWCNT.
