Canonical ensemble ground state and correlation entropy of Bose–Einstein condensate

Abstract

Constraint of a fixed total number of particles yields a correlation between the fluctuation of particles in different states in the canonical ensemble. Here we show that, below the temperature of Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC), the correlation part of the entropy of an ideal Bose gas is cancelled by the ground-state contribution. Thus, in the BEC region, the thermodynamic properties of the gas in the canonical ensemble can be described accurately in a simplified model which excludes the ground state and assumes no correlation between excited levels.

Entropy of the Bose-Einstein-condensate ground state: Correlation versus ground-state entropy

Moochan B. Kim, Anatoly A. Svidzinsky, G. S. Agarwal +1 more

Calculation of the entropy of an ideal Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a three-dimensional trap reveals unusual, previously unrecognized, features of the canonical ensemble. It is found that, for any temperature, the entropy of the Bose gas is equal to the entropy of the excited particles although the entropy of the particles in the ground state is nonzero. We explain this by considering the correlations between the ground-state particles and particles in the excited states. These correlations lead to a correlation entropy which is exactly equal to the contribution from the ground state. The correlations themselves arise from the fact that we have a fixed number of particles obeying quantum statistics. We present results for correlation functions between the ground and excited states in a Bose gas, so as to clarify the role of fluctuations in the system. We also report the sub-Poissonian nature of the ground-state fluctuations.

Condensation ofNbosons. III. Analytical results for all higher moments of condensate fluctuations in interacting and ideal dilute Bose gases via the canonical ensemble quasiparticle formulation

Vitaly V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Marlan O. Scully

We consider equilibrium canonical-ensemble fluctuations of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a trap using the particle-number conserving operator formalism of Girardeau and Arnowitt [Phys. Rev. 113, 755 (1959)] and the concept of the canonical-ensemble quasiparticles. We find explicit expressions for the characteristic function and all cumulants of the ground-state occupation statistics both for the dilute weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases. We present analytical formulas for the moments of the ground-state occupation fluctuations in the weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases in a box (``homogeneous gas'') as well as in the ideal Bose gas in an arbitrary power-law trap, in particular, in an arbitrary harmonic trap. We calculate the effect of Bogoliubov coupling between quasiparticles on suppression of the ground-state occupation fluctuations at moderate temperatures and their enhancement at very low temperatures. We clarify a crossover between ideal-gas and weakly interacting gas statistics, which is governed by a pair-correlation, squeezing mechanism. The important conclusion is that in most cases the ground-state occupation fluctuations are anomalously large and are not Gaussian even in the thermodynamic limit.

Gaussian fluctuations in an ideal bose-gas – a simple model

A Petrova, Oleg V. Nedopekin, Tayurskii Dmitrii Albertovich +1 more

Based on the canonical ensemble, we suggested the simple scheme for taking into account Gaussian fluctuations in a finite system of ideal boson gas. Within framework of scheme we investigated the influence of fluctuations on the particle distribution in Bose -gas for two cases - with taking into account the number of particles in the ground state and without this assumption. The temperature and fluctuation parameter dependences of the modified Bose-Einstein distribution have been determined. Also the dependence of the condensation temperature on the fluctuation distribution parameter has been obtained.

Conditional ensemble averages and ground-state fluctuations in few-body ideal Bose gases

Ji-Xuan Hou

Abstract The grand canonical catastrophe—characterized by order-unity relative fluctuations of the ground-state occupation in the grand canonical ensemble (GCE) at low temperatures—is a hallmark of ensemble inequivalence in ideal Bose gases and has been observed in photon Bose–Einstein condensates. In this work, we investigate an alternative class of observables defined via conditional ensemble averages , namely ⟨ n 0 / N ⟩ and ⟨ δ n 0 2 / N 2 ⟩ , where the average excludes the empty-system sector ( N = 0 ). Using the exactly solvable model of an ideal Bose gas in a one-dimensional harmonic trap, we show that these conditional averages reproduce microcanonical predictions even for modest particle numbers ( N ∼ 10 ) and exhibit vanishing relative fluctuations as temperature approaches zero. We stress that this does not contradict the standard GCE result ⟨ δ n 0 2 ⟩ → ⟨ N ⟩ 2 , which remains thermodynamically valid for open systems. Instead, our framework provides a natural description for experimental scenarios involving post-selection or implicit conditioning on non-empty realizations—common in few-body quantum gas experiments. Thus, the absence of large fluctuations in these conditional averages reflects a change in the observable, not a failure of ensemble theory.

Condensate Statistics in Interacting and Ideal Dilute Bose Gases

Vitaly V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Marlan O. Scully

We obtain analytical formulas for the statistics, in particular, for the characteristic function and all cumulants, of the Bose-Einstein condensate in dilute weakly interacting and ideal equilibrium gases in the canonical ensemble via the particle-number-conserving operator formalism of Girardeau and Arnowitt. We prove that the ground-state occupation statistics is not Gaussian even in the thermodynamic limit. We calculate the effect of Bogoliubov coupling on suppression of ground-state occupation fluctuations and show that they are governed by a pair-correlation, squeezing mechanism.
