Abstract

We obtain analytical formulas for the statistics, in particular, for the characteristic function and all cumulants, of the Bose-Einstein condensate in dilute weakly interacting and ideal equilibrium gases in the canonical ensemble via the particle-number-conserving operator formalism of Girardeau and Arnowitt. We prove that the ground-state occupation statistics is not Gaussian even in the thermodynamic limit. We calculate the effect of Bogoliubov coupling on suppression of ground-state occupation fluctuations and show that they are governed by a pair-correlation, squeezing mechanism.

Condensation ofNbosons. III. Analytical results for all higher moments of condensate fluctuations in interacting and ideal dilute Bose gases via the canonical ensemble quasiparticle formulation

We consider equilibrium canonical-ensemble fluctuations of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a trap using the particle-number conserving operator formalism of Girardeau and Arnowitt [Phys. Rev. 113, 755 (1959)] and the concept of the canonical-ensemble quasiparticles. We find explicit expressions for the characteristic function and all cumulants of the ground-state occupation statistics both for the dilute weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases. We present analytical formulas for the moments of the ground-state occupation fluctuations in the weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases in a box (``homogeneous gas'') as well as in the ideal Bose gas in an arbitrary power-law trap, in particular, in an arbitrary harmonic trap. We calculate the effect of Bogoliubov coupling between quasiparticles on suppression of the ground-state occupation fluctuations at moderate temperatures and their enhancement at very low temperatures. We clarify a crossover between ideal-gas and weakly interacting gas statistics, which is governed by a pair-correlation, squeezing mechanism. The important conclusion is that in most cases the ground-state occupation fluctuations are anomalously large and are not Gaussian even in the thermodynamic limit.

Canonical statistics of trapped ideal and interacting Bose gases

Hongwei Xiong, Shujuan Liu, Guoxiang Huang +1 more

The mean ground-state occupation number and condensate fluctuations of interacting and noninteracting Bose gases confined in a harmonic trap are considered by using a canonical ensemble approach. To obtain the mean ground-state occupation number and the condensate fluctuations, an analytical description for the probability distribution function of the condensate is provided directly starting from the analysis of the partition function of the system. For the ideal Bose gas, the probability distribution function is found to be a Gaussian one for the case of the harmonic trap. For the interacting Bose gas, using a unified approach the condensate fluctuations are calculated based on the lowest-order perturbation method and on Bogoliubov theory. It is found that the condensate fluctuations based on the lowest-order perturbation theory follow the law $〈{\ensuremath{\delta}}^{2}{N}_{0}〉\ensuremath{\sim}N,$ while the fluctuations based on Bogoliubov theory behave as ${N}^{4/3}.$

Condensate statistics and thermodynamics of weakly interacting Bose gas: Recursion relation approach

Konstantin E. Dorfman, M. Kim, Anatoly A. Svidzinsky

We study condensate statistics and thermodynamics of weakly interacting Bose gas with a fixed total number $N$ of particles in a cubic box. We find the exact recursion relation for the canonical ensemble partition function. Using this relation, we calculate the distribution function of condensate particles for $N=200$. We also calculate the distribution function based on multinomial expansion of the characteristic function. Similar to the ideal gas, both approaches give exact statistical moments for all temperatures in the framework of Bogoliubov model. We compare them with the results of unconstraint canonical ensemble quasiparticle formalism and the hybrid master equation approach. The present recursion relation can be used for any external potential and boundary conditions. We investigate the temperature dependence of the first few statistical moments of condensate fluctuations as well as thermodynamic potentials and heat capacity analytically and numerically in the whole temperature range.

Microcanonical fluctuations of the condensate in weakly interacting Bose gases

Zbigniew Idziaszek

We study fluctuations of the number of Bose condensed atoms in a weakly interacting homogeneous and trapped gases. For a homogeneous system we apply the particle-number-conserving formulation of the Bogoliubov theory and calculate the condensate fluctuations within the canonical and the microcanonical ensembles. We demonstrate that, at least in the low-temperature regime, predictions of the particle-number-conserving and traditional, nonconserving theory are identical, and lead to the anomalous scaling of fluctuations. Furthermore, the microcanonical fluctuations differ from the canonical ones by a quantity which scales normally in the number of particles, thus predictions of both ensembles are equivalent in the thermodynamic limit. We observe a similar behavior for a weakly interacting gas in a harmonic trap. This is in contrast to the trapped, ideal gas, where microcanonical and canonical fluctuations are different in the thermodynamic limit.

Condensate fluctuations of interacting Bose gases within a microcanonical ensemble

Jianhui Wang, Jizhou He, Yong-li Ma

Based on counting statistics and Bogoliubov theory, we present a recurrence relation for the microcanonical partition function for a weakly interacting Bose gas with a finite number of particles in a cubic box. According to this microcanonical partition function, we calculate numerically the distribution function, condensate fraction, and condensate fluctuations for a finite and isolated Bose-Einstein condensate. For ideal and weakly interacting Bose gases, we compare the condensate fluctuations with those in the canonical ensemble. The present approach yields an accurate account of the condensate fluctuations for temperatures close to the critical region. We emphasize that the interactions between excited atoms turn out to be important for moderate temperatures.

Weakly interacting Bose gases in the canonical ensemble

Jonata S. Soares, Axel Pelster, Arnaldo Gammal

Based on the canonical description of a non-interacting Bose gas, we work out how both thermodynamic and statistical properties change perturbatively with respect to weak two-particle interactions. Up to first order, we obtain a recursion formula for the canonical partition function, which consists of the same Feynman diagrams as the grand-canonical description but with different Feynman rules. Resumming this recursion formula for the canonical partition function allows one to characterize the statistics of the ground-state occupancy by its respective cumulants. We demonstrate the applicability of this approach by analyzing a dilute Bose gas with contact interaction in a box trap. To this end, we used Dirichlet boundary conditions in view of their relevance for current experiments with atomic gases, where the box trap is implemented, for instance, with digital mirror devices.
